was anyone from here there? i can’t believe how full that place was. i think that might have been a bigger crowd than the Silver Jews got even. it was awesome being in the balcony like 15 feet from j at head level. j is the best guitarist of his generation for certain sure!! i think that might have been the best, or at least one of the best, j shows i have ever seen out of a dozen or so (seen dino three times and j with fog/solo/cv about 8 or 10 times). thanks again j for another great night. and for making t-shirts with bunnies on them
August 29, 2006 at 1:47 pm #121153HI!
New here. Saw Dino jr for the first time last night. Been a fan for only a couple years and had to see them. They play so freakin loud. The crowd was ok, I don’t think the energy was where it could have been. Also what was up w/soooooo many damn pictures being taken. The flashes got old real fast.
I must say their live show is a much different vibe than their albums. Much more of harder edge to it. I didn’t get any of the country music vibe. That’s not a bad thing just an observation.
o and the opener was…different.
August 29, 2006 at 4:30 pm #121154I was there too, right in front of J
It was fun.Dude, did any of you see the guy flipping off and yelling at J after he started playin Freak Scene?
August 29, 2006 at 6:30 pm #121155August 29, 2006 at 9:11 pm #121156Who opened? I didn’t want to go down super early because I knew the club would be full and VERY warm. As it turned out I was walking in the door just as Dino were walking out to go in the front and go onstage. Also I hate to say this but last time I saw Dino reunion play here (at the 9:30 last year) the opener was really awful. I got kinda dissed for saying that as it turns out they’re friends of someone I know, but they were just too artsy and not rockin’ enuf. In any event, I wasn’t sure I wanted to bother coming early for some "special guest" whose identity wasn’t listed on the club site.
I suspect any lack of energy might have been due to the fact that it had to be about 100 degrees in parts of the room and that you literally could not move on the main floor of the club, much less see in many cases. From upstairs I could basically see the top halves of J and Lou, that’s about it…and that was still a lot more than I could have seen from down on the floor! In any event I didn’t see anybody rushing to get out of there early, people were pretty spellbound with attention. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to see much of anything so I took some crocheting and worked on that while listening and got up to dance during a couple songs.
Who were all those really young kids upfront? they looked about 11 years old max. i was wondering if they were even born when Dino was around the first time

I didn’t see the flip off guy but I saw the one guy trying to crowd surf, I don’t think he got too far with it but I don’t think they threw him out either. The O-bar is a nice little venue, I have to say I greatly prefer it to the 9:30 where there are all these rules about where you can stand or sit and you can’t get up to the stage anymore. One thing I did notice is Lou was totally silent this show compared to the last one where he talked a lot between songs.
Wish the show had been a little longer, but given that it was a million degrees and I had to get home to sleep in order to get to work today, I didn’t mind…Too much…I don’t think
August 29, 2006 at 10:28 pm #121157It was warm but I wasn’t bothered @ all by it. I prefer Rams Head Live to both 9:30 and Ottobar. You can’t get a better location than Rams.
And yea I did notice the youngins up front. I’m 23 and thought I’d be among the youngest there. The more I think about it the more I feel the crowd sucked. The band showed very little interest in the show…or maybe that’s just how they are normally.
The opener was some artsy duo that played a bunch of distortion stuff (i guess that’s what you call it). Just loudness. Maybe if I was high I woulda enjoyed it more.

just 5’6". But um yeah those kids were annoying… it was like they never shut up. The kind of kids who like small penis jokes, you know. But we got there early so…Quote:The opener was some artsy duo that played a bunch of distortion stuff (i guess that’s what you call it). Just loudness. Maybe if I was high I woulda enjoyed it more.I really didn’t like them. It felt like each song was 15 minutes.
August 30, 2006 at 9:18 pm #121159I missed it. Bummer.
August 30, 2006 at 9:30 pm #121160Hi there, I’m 17 and I would assume the average age at the show was 20-something.
I absolutely hated the opener. The guitarist seemed really pretentious, acting like he was playing something technically demanding (though I guess even if he played well it would be hard to compete with J). It seemed like a joke but it was a noisy joke, so after like ten minutes I went back by the water cooler and made a flower sculpture out of plastic cups. Some people probably liked them, but they weren’t really my cup of tea.
But I digress…Dinosaur Jr was AMAZING. I’d only seen Youtube videos and stuff before and I was afraid the vocals were going to be sloppy or something, but they all played and sang fantastically well. I was up against the soundboard in the back of the main floor and I was on tiptoes the entire time (boy were my calves sore). Everything sounded great, Lou beat the living dead out of his bass, Murph the Tank Engine played like you would imagine of someone deserving a dopey train metaphor, and J had everything turned up absurdly loud. During the opening chords of Gargoyle I thought "This is so much louder than on the albu–" and then had all my thoughts obliterated when J stomped on his Big Muff. Cool t-shirts too!
P.S. Really sucks about the gear getting stolen.
