There is one genre of music that by far surpasses all others in the production of powerful vocalists…Opera. However, if we are talking rock’n’roll, 80’s heavy metal produced its share of vocal athletes as well. Powerful "screaming" vocalists & shredding guitars are the hall mark of the genre. A small sampling:
              Bruce Dickenson-Iron Maiden
              Rob Halford-Judas Priest
              Tom Araya-Slayer
              Geoff Tate-Queensryche
              King Diamond-Merciful Fate
These guys are the definition of "metal." By no means is thier music for everyone, but if you are looking for guys with lungs of steel, a 5 octave range, and the ability to awaken the dead beasts of hell- these are the dudes.

I’ve always been impressed by John Lennon’s screaming on songs like "Yer Blues" and especially on "Well, well, well". But in my mind there is no one to even come close to Kurt Cobain. He could scream like no other. Pain on music.

Jerry Cantrell was the lead guitarist and backup vocalist of Alice in Chains, Lane Staley was the Lead vocalist, but when you consider it, they almost always sang together, the Alice in Chains sound is the dual lead vocals sound.

Can’t belive nobody’s mentioned Mike Patton (faith no more/MR BUNGLE)

Henry Rollins for sure…if you ever see a show live you know what I mean. It looks like the man is going to bust a vain any second.

I have to also agree with kweezy
                        Rob Halford-Judas Priest
Tom Araya-Slayer…every song seems like he gets louder when he plays live and since almost all the songs they play he is screaming that is kind of impressive.

I nominate Axl Rose, Chris Robinson, Marilyn Manson, Jim Morrison, Screamin Jay Hawkins, and Diamanda Galas for screams.
