No problemo, just turn the sustain wide open and adjust the tone to add treble and get that crunchy fuzz tone. That’s all…

          Hey…

…try setting the distortion at 2 o’clock and the other two knobs at 3/4 o’clock. Works for me.

The best all-round Big Muff tone, IMHO, is to put the sustain up full, have the tone at about 12 – 1 O’clock and the volume wherever ya want- nice and thick, dark fuzz tone.

I feel I have to say, before everyone gets bored of this post, that the best sounds ever acheved with a Big Muff are on Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins. Just check out the insane chainsaw fuzztones of songs like Cherub Rock, Quiet or Geek USA.
Other personal Muff favourites, are Lithium (Nirvana, Duh), Touch Me I’m Sick (Mudhoney), and some Garbage songs (Dinosaur Jr stuff goes without saying), but the Pumpkins remain the best.

Hey Gideon, those tones from Smashing Pumpkins…some of those songs had like 51 or 52 tracks of just fuzz guitars. I found that I really dont care that much for my black reissue muff live, it sounds ok, but for recording I almost dont use anything else.

does the black big muff actualy have different electrics from the normal silver one, or is it just a casing thing?

ok, there is a difference between them, mine doesnt have as much gain, but thats a good thing for recording.

Kurt did use a big muff, on the Nevermind sessions. I think thats the only time he ever used one. Live, he never used one, he always used a Ds-1 untill he broke his, then he (to his dismay) started using a DS-2. on Live and Loud, he used the Dod Grunge pedal and then threw it out in the croud, hehe. He used a sansamp like once or twice I think. Ok ill shut up now.

Hey RJ, I know about all those loadsa tracks and stuff, I’m Just saying it sounds F*cking Kool. All the rhytum guitars on that album where done by plugging a Big Muff (with the volume and sustain on full, into the low sensitivity input of a Marshall JCM800 loaded with KT88 valves (master volume on full, preamp barely on at all).

I was actually gonna say about Kurt using a DS1 on everything up to and including Nevermind. (After it was recorded he switched to a DS2). However, I know he used a muff on Lithium coz I read an interview with Butch Vig and thats what he said (Big Muff into a fender Bassman). It sounds to me like he used one on breed too, and it definately doesn’t sound like a BOSS pedal.

nirvana stuff does sound great through one im suprised he didnt stick with it live

He didn’t stick with it live, coz he hardly used it and the boss pedals give you more definition live. Also, Kurt thought that his characteristic guitar tone came primarily from his DS1/2 pedal. Anyway, the boss ones suit the Nirvana stuff better I think.
