Also, I did not see a drive with that size in the list available in FDISK?</STRONG><HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Did you see one slightly smaller? Some 30 GB drives (for example) are actually 28.4… if not we may have a problem.
August 18, 2001 at 6:44 pm #83095Did you see your drive when you tried to access it from DOS? ie when you entered ‘D:’
August 19, 2001 at 2:06 am #83096Hmm.. Most computers have a little message that pops up after start that tells you to hit a certain key to get into bios. It should go, video bios > mobo bios w/ POST (power on self test) during which you should see something like "press ___ for setup" usually its the delete key, but I know that most big PC companies like Compaq, Dell, etc change it for some reason…
Is the drive still in the machine? Try removing it first…
Oh, did you set the jumpers on the back of your new and old drives..?
What drives are in your machine now (HDs and CDROMs) and which IDE channels is each on..?

This most likely is the cause of the error. Make sure the second drive is set to "slave." I’ve never seen on a modern mobo that the BIOS don’t autodetect.
August 19, 2001 at 11:56 pm #83098Well, any news on your new HD, Jeremiah? Did you manage to get it working… You’ve got me on this project now, so no giving up…
August 20, 2001 at 11:09 am #83099Definatly still needing some help! Was called away from the pc yesterday so I had to stop working on it.
Here is my current status –
After I set the jumpers last and started to boot up, it said that it automatically updated my drives. It listed my old drive, the new drive and my cd drives with the correct sizes.
It is still not accessable via Windows or DOS and in FDISK it said I had two drives but listed the second one as having 7.5 gigs instead of the 28 I was expecting?!!? I decided to run with it anyway and try to set the logical DOS partition. This worked so I tried to set the primary DOS partition and it said I could not do that with the selected drive. Returned to Windows where the drive letter was set but it was inaccessable? Went back to fdisk and removed it.
The disk size displayed in fdisk is really making me wonder if I will be able to do it without being able to access my BIOS.
August 20, 2001 at 12:04 pm #83100usually when you put a new hdd the bios autodetect it if it’s setup is ok i mean by that the jumper configuration. i suggest you to put the first hdd on ide0 master and the cd rom on the same wire but slave as i draw what i mean
that’s the wire–> 1—2—-3 (1 is the master 2 is the slave so the cdrom and 3 goes to the ide0 on the motherboard) and the second hdd on ide1 master. In the bios go to auto detect hdd to see if it’s ok. After that use the start up disk of your operating system to format your hdd. I suggest you a boot dos disk and type format d: /s if d: is the letter of your second hdd and voila install your OS on the second hdd. But if you want a dual boot machine be sure to install the old system first and specify the location of the new one d: Note that if you want step by step installation just tell me want specification you have, operating system you want, capacity of your hdd, and what peripheric you have.August 20, 2001 at 12:16 pm #83101I’ll double check my jumpers when I get home today. The one big problem I have is that my BIOS are currently inaccessable so I can’t get in there to check!
August 20, 2001 at 12:34 pm #83102Hmm… If your 30GB drive was reported as 7.5, then you may have an older BIOS that can’t support over 8GB… I’m not absolutely sure about this, but if it is the case you will have to see if Compaq has an update for it.
I took a quick look at the Compaq Website, it has a support page where you select your model # and it’ll supposedly get you any current files availible. It may be worth a try.
Careful when flashing though. It’s best to do it from a clean DOS boot, no config.sys or autoexec.bat.
August 20, 2001 at 12:45 pm #83103I have a cd that has all the updates they offer for my model. Will the flash bios updates be listed as that (BIOS Update) or some other term?
August 20, 2001 at 12:46 pm #83104Ah ha! (Not the 80’s band. )
I did some searching, found This thread in some crappy forum. Looks similar to your situation.
August 20, 2001 at 12:50 pm #83105Very cool!!! Thanks Mattman! I’ll give that a shot when I get home today!
August 20, 2001 at 1:11 pm #83106Here’s some more:
From some research I’ve done, it seems that Compaq stores the BIOS information on the harddrive instead of a flashROM chip like most other mobos use. I think they’re referred to as ‘softpaqs’.
If f10 lets you into the BIOS, hopefully there will be a utility that detects and properly sets up a new HD, so keep an eye out for something like that.
August 21, 2001 at 11:33 am #83107Strange shit is afoot so watch where you step!
Last night I finally got into the BIOS (thanks again Mattman) but it did not have any option that would help. After that, I went back to FDISK and walked through all those steps again and set the partitions up. It showed up in windows but was inaccessable, just like before. At this time I was ready to just put it back in the box and store it untill I get a new pc.
I started doing some cleanup before I was going to power off and when I went to empty the recycle bin a message popped up and asked if I wanted to format the drive (which I tried to do directly just moments before?). It did and now it is available although it only shows 7.5 gigs? I can deal with that as I am pretty stressed for space right now anyway.
what did I learn? no deal is good enough to convince me to buy another PC from compaq and to install a hard-drive, empty your recycle bin?
my computer is on crack.
Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated!!!!
