Hi all, well my ears aren’t ringing too badly this morning which is a welcome surprise.
I saw Dino at the Forum last June and I couldn’t hear properly for days afterwards so last night, although thunderously loud, was not as loud as last time. And that was actually a good thing as the *music* was crystal clear. Dino really sounded fantastic, great musicianship, hardly a bum note and I don’ think I’ve heard a single false start in any of the reunion bootlegs… I’ve got an old bootleg somewhere from Newcastle Riverside ’89 (which I was also at) and they spent so much time trying to get going that the crowd got really pissed off with them… but enough of that.
The gig was moved from the main Academy stage to the Academy 2 stage tonight presumably because of poor ticket sales
It must have been fairly borderline though because the place was seriously *packed* out. I was leaning up against the side railing at the back next to the sound board. Ajay was bopping away just to my right. He had a minidisc connected up to (a) the soundboard and (b) a pair of freestanding microphones. I understand that he does this at every show!!! The recordings must sound fantastic with that source… pity he doesn’t share them…Being a bit of a short-arse I didn’t get to see much. I caught a few glimpses of J and Lou and even less of Murph (the stage at Academy 2 is very low) but that didn’t really matter. I suppose I could have stood right at the front but I was wired and really wanted to get the best possible sound hence standing at the back.
I didn’t think much of The Like (and they didn’t think much of us judging by their comments) but Dead Meadow were simply amazing. Only Dinosaur could have bettered them … and they did…with….
Gargoyle
Bulbs
Kracked
Wagon
Tarpit
Lung
Little Fury Things
Post
Forget the Swan
Budge
Lose
Raisans
Sludgefeast
—
Just Like Heaven
Freak Scene
Mountain ManI was a bit disappointed not to get No Bones, In A Jar and Quest but that was made up for by the presence of Post and Mountain Man … awlright!!
Lou had big amp trouble towards the end of Swan and there was a lengthy break while the gear guy fixed it up, J and Murph were jamming away to pass the time… v cool… Some guy shouted for Get Me, J replied ‘No, we will not be playing Get Me, Lou does not know how to play that song" and so they launched into Lose…
To finish the night off I picked up a t-shirt with the Dinosaur s/t album cover on it, my favourite album cover of all time. The only bummer was presented to me as I drove out of the multi-story opposite the venue … ?8.40 for 4 poxy hours! what a rip off…
Anyway, the recording is shaping up nicely and I hope to have it posted on freesofree and on dime within the next day or two.
Cheers!
May 23, 2006 at 10:16 am #117715Hey Mike,
Thanks for the report. Sounds like a great nite (too bad about the parking fee). Looking forward to hearing your recording. Plus, you should try and get that ’89 Newcastle gig uploaded onto freesofree. I’d be psyched to hear that old relic!May 23, 2006 at 2:39 pm #117716Thanks for the review & setlist, so looking forward to listening to that show!!!
May 23, 2006 at 3:57 pm #117717Hey, was at the show aswell, Got to the venue at 3pm and saw J and Lou, they were busy but about an hour later, Lou came out to Greet the Dead Meadow Guys, ended up talking with him for a good 45 mins about all sorts from Dinosaur Jr, to his solo work, to his family etc, His wife and Hannah went missing but he went to look for them and found them in boots. Spoke to him a little more and my partner and myself got a cool photo taken with him. We also saw Murph and all the Dead Meadow guys and said hey to them all.Well we stood at the front of the queue for 3hrs with two other people (Who were only there to see the like) untill some others started joining.
Well anyway got inside and was right at the front, The Like were not so good but Dead Meadow kicked ass! Well Dinosaur came on and they rocked the hell out of the place. I shouted for Bulbs of Passion at the start and some girl wouldnt stop asking for get me, i was so glad when J put her straight. Dinosaur were amazing, they sounded so good and so loud and they were all really into it. It was great to be that close to them and it was so amazing to see them.
My only complaint was some of the crowd just didn’t seem to want to see them, Firstly some woman started punching my partner and then me and screaming at us to f**k off :S then we ended up with these fat drunk old men behind us who just wanted to use us as crashing posts. Oh then at the other end of the scale the guy next to me wasn’t into it at all. he just stood leaning on the raid looking so bored. Guess it just bugged me that some people didn’t actually want to watch this amazing band.
As far as Dinosaur Jr go they were just amazing, Can’t wait to hear that recording Mike, it was a great show. I got some real good pictures too as I was so close so i’ll see what I can do about getting them up soon!
Any q’s about the show just ask!
Been InsaneMay 24, 2006 at 7:39 am #117718I’m not fat (well, not THAT fat) but I am getting old and I was drunk and I was probably one of the annoying people you mentioned, BeenInsane. I was wearing a white first-album-cover t-shirt.
You go to a punk rock show, you go down the front, you have to expect to get knocked about a bit. I was really worried that no-one would be moving, that everyone would just be standing around clapping politely. The fact that there was such a great moshpit really made the night for me. Some of us had been waiting for that night for half our lives or more. That’s a lot of pent-up pit-work to be got rid of!
May 24, 2006 at 8:48 am #117719No, wasn’t you Scott, Think I did see you having a good old time
and I don’t mind a mosh pit either. I’m all for people having a good time, hell, I was going crazy myself. Believe it or not this isn’t the first show i’ve been to.
I don’t however expect to be punched in the head over by some crazed woman for no reason. Also I don’t think that someone screaming "Play Freak Scene or we’ll kill you motherfuckers" is a good way to show respect for a band you have came to see. I also don’t see how when J is singing the start of Gargoyle people can be moshing around. I guess at the end of the day some of us just have different ideas on how a show should be, I actually went to watch the band as well as listen which some people there definatley didn’t wanna do.
I am glad you had a good time Scott and so did I, it was a truly amazing night. As soon as I get the pictures on my pc i’ll post them up for all to see.
Do have to agree with mike though, I don’t see why they moved the show to the Academy 2 as that place was packed solid! People were standing on the balcony in the Academy 1!EDIT: By the way, my ears are STILL ringing! i’m starting to get worried
Hows the recording going Mike?May 24, 2006 at 9:05 am #117720Hi again all,
Just to let you know that my recordings are now on dime…
Dead Meadow – http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=96898&hit=1″>http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-deta … 6898&hit=1
Dinosaur Jr – http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=96900&hit=1″>http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-deta … 6900&hit=1I’m also uploading them to http://www.freesofree.net”>http://www.freesofree.net as I type.
I think they sound really good – I hope you’ll agree … let me know what you think!
As for the Newcastle Riverside tape from 89, I have spent more hours than I care to dwell upon trying to find that cassette… I know I had it before we moved house in Sept 04 but my whole box of bootleg tapes (including gigs by Spacemen 3, Loop and many others) has since mysteriously dissappeared
I’m sure it will show up one day though.Cheers!
Mike

Oh then at the other end of the scale the guy next to me wasn’t into it at all. he just stood leaning on the raid looking so bored. Guess it just bugged me that some people didn’t actually want to watch this amazing band.I am fairly sure that I am the guy who was next to you and allegedly bored. I say this because the guy immediately to my left during the show (almost certainly you) had problems with a woman screaming at the lady he was with, and eventually he stepped away from the barrier a couple of songs from the end as the crowd became more rowdy. Your comments are most unhelpful, and ill-considered. It is very easy and very cowardly to post comments in this anecdotal fashion about how other people felt, or to insinuate that they "weren’t into it". You don’t know me, just as I don’t know you. You have no idea how I was feeling during the show, or whether I was bored, and furthermore, I very much doubt whether Dinosaur Jr. have appointed you a position whereby you are required to ensure that everyone who has paid for a ticket must watch attentively and rapt with pleasure at all times, therefore save yourself the heartache and concentrate on your own experience.
For your information, I really enjoyed the show. This doesn’t mean that my face was a picture of ecstasy at all points throughout Dinosaur Jr. being on stage, or that I threw my body about in wild abandon at all times, but, nonetheless, I was certainly "into it". You are correct when you assert that I was leaning on the barrier, the reasons for this being manifold and not exactly criminal i.e. to take some of the weight off of my legs, to steady myself when taking pictures or filming, and also because I didn’t really have anywhere else to go once the momentum of the crowd surged forward and pinned me in place. Even if I had wanted to dance around (which I didn’t particularly feel like doing that night) I couldn’t have; I didn’t have the room. I hope I have explained my behaviour away suitably.
May 26, 2006 at 3:28 am #117725WHY.DO.PEOPLE.TAKE.CELLPHONES.TO.SHOWS?I HATE THAT.
SMSing like crazy and stuff. I even had somebody start a conversation on his phone at a show recently. What kind of shit-behaviour is that ? I don’t mind seeing a couple of pix from a show so it’s cool to have people take pictures (w/either phone or camera), but whatthehellamItryingtosayanyway

I know. It’s staggering — many people now have about 8-second attention spans, before they start fidgeting and reaching for their cell phones. It’s like a culture-wide neurosis. If you can’t focus on a live music performance, what *can* you focus on? How long is it going to be before couples start texting each other while they’re having sex? I was just talking about this last night, and how walking down the street as practically the only person who’s not compulsively texting and yapping into my phone makes me feel like the whole world’s gone insane around me. I feel like Ishmael in Moby Dick: "Whenever I find … that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off [replace "hats" with "phones"] — then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can."
