Bug has got to be my goddamn favorite album of all time. It’s a fuckin’ masterpiece in itself. Every end of every track leads to an even greater emotional and spiritual buildup with perfect lead guitar, drums (this was murph’s greatest effort in my opinion), and bass..Ohh..and did i forget vocals? All without one even coming close to pushing the skip button. (Yeah right..who in their right mind would even consider doing something like that..even once
) I just have to say that the one song that touches me most on the entire album is They Always Come. I don’t ever hear much excitement directed towards this track by that many people. How can you forget the very last pain-delivering sentences desperately muttered from Mascis?? I know that this song must be about drug addiction with referencesto "smack" and "Hope it don’t lead off the map, then." Just utter brilliance is all that I get from feeding from it. I was just deciding if I had pulled the right lyrics from it or not. Can you guys take a look at them and let me know if they are accurate or if I need to keep listening more closely. Obviously, I need help with the very last lines. (Ha. Sometimes it’s just hard to make out words that J is saying!).They Always Come

BugWell, I’ve been trying for it, but didn’t get. Now, it won’t bend. And you’ve been flying for it.
A mound of smack won’t fill the crack. They always come in twos. All this space they always use.
All the steps I’ve taken, behind me. Not feelin’, now, what it’s left inside me. So I’m taking a
nap, then. All the things I’ve left unspoken. I wonder if it’s still got me joking. Hope it don’t lead

August 23, 2006 at 10:19 pm #120965Oops thanks for pointing that out to me. Sorry. I’m really tired today. I didn’t realize that I had written more than I should have in the title
. I’m gonna fix that………August 23, 2006 at 10:26 pm #120966"LightFixturesRotateToTumble " wrote:Oops thanks for pointing that out to me. Sorry. I’m really tired today. I didn’t realize that I had written more than I should have in the title
. I’m gonna fix that………It’s cool. I actually saw your post and put on Bug. And I do agree with you. "They Always Come" is defintely one of my favorites, if not the best track from Bug. I love how it goes from the fast, aggressive beginning to the poppy chorus and then later is just sort of dreamy, but never loses gas. Hopefully we have some great stuff like this on that new album they’re cooking up. Rock on Dino!
August 24, 2006 at 12:14 am #120967I didn’t have a fair chance to go very far into interpretation as I wanted to earlier with "THEY ALWAYS COME," so I’m going to do that now (Thanks again, Jaylst)
. For me, J Mascis seems to be telling of one who does not listen to or heed the warnings and the dangers of drug addiction…how he laughs, scoffs, and shrugs off all those who try to reach out and help while slowly being consumed by his habit(s). All the while, the one with the problem knows that this isn’t the best path to choose, but it seems like, to him, the only path there is at the present time to avoid the physical and emotional pains that he has to deal with on a regular basis. Just a classic case set in a modern, strange, and very interesting format by J and the gang. I wonder if this comes from one of J’s own personal experiences. I would believe so after examining how well he clearly illustrates all that he has stated so incredibly well.
August 24, 2006 at 12:25 am #120968I also really enjoyed the lyrics to "Yeah We Know." This is another one of Bug’s "hidden treasures." To be honest, it’s a real close tie, for me, between "They Always Come" and "Yeah We Know." It’s a really tough decision, as you may be able to see.
August 24, 2006 at 8:51 am #120969I always thought it was "all these steps I’ve taken, don’t look now what’s left to try then (something along those lines), so I’m taking nothing…"
I’ve been way off on the lyrics before though. Will have to revisit.

I know most people will say YLAOM is the best Dino album but Bug sounds a little better production wise and of course by record#3 they were playing tighter as a unit more than ever.August 24, 2006 at 11:09 am #120971"SG " wrote:Bug is the my favorite album ever

Remember this was the time where they really didn’t get along to well. I remember reading that Lou and Murph recorded their parts for the album really quick, and weren’t around for the rest of the recording. J did alot of this album by himself. I think in one of the the reissue liner notes Sean Kolderie said the only reason J liked working with them is because they let him do what ever he wanted. It is tighter but I wonder if thats due to J recording alot of it himself. I don’t know.
I still love Bug it was the first Dinosaur Jr album I bought. Green Mind is my favorite closely followed by YLAOM. Come to think of it the whole catalogue is amazing.
August 24, 2006 at 11:41 am #120972The bass playing sounds alot like Lou not to be Lou and it sounds like Murph`s style on drums so I don`t know how much rhythm section action J played.
August 24, 2006 at 2:42 pm #120973i’ve thought of J has a junkie at some point in his life, with a couple songs lyrics, but I’m not sure at all.
August 31, 2006 at 12:57 am #120974I really doubt that J has ever done hard drugs. He doesn’t look or actb like the kind of guy who would do that sort of stuff.
