Well, tonight didn’t go entirely to plan for the Fog gig at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire (London) gig. The set list was more or less the same as the Ron Asheton gig list posted earlier this week. However… totally unexpected by the audience, just as they were about to do No Fun, Mike said (something like) "Here’s Bobby" and on came Bobby Gillespie out of Primal Scream to do vocals on the track. Part way through the track, someone near the front (at Mike’s side of the stage, where Bobby was) started spitting at him. Bobby spitted back a couple of times, then decided to get a bit heavier…. He picked up Mike’s microphone stand (one of those with a really heavy circular base plate), raised it above his head like an axe , and brought it down into the audience. He did this a couple of times, then finally threw the whole thing into the audience. Then he picked up the microphone (which had snapped off the stand) and hurled it into the audience like he was bowling a baseball.

J, Mike and George looked totally shocked… Bobby disappeared off stage and Mike said something like, "Well, THAT was No Fun…". The remainder of the gig was pretty much wrecked. One of the technicians had to come on between tracks to swap the one remaining mic stand between Mike and J (the other was totally mangled) and at the end, Mike and J were at the back of the stage looking pretty stressed out. As we left the venue, everyone was talking about it….

Coupled with (in my opinion) too much focus on the Stooges covers, along with Mike’s even more erratic than normal basslines, I didn’t really enjoy it much. I thought the support were shite too. It’s such a disappointment… Seeing J at the Cambridge Junction back in 97 was the best gig I’ve ever been to!

If you’re going to the Brighton gig tomorrow, I think you can safely assume Bobby won’t be making another appearance. It will be interesting to see what Watt has to say about this on his Hootpage…

i have to disagree. it was amazing. too many stooges covers, but ALL the dino and songs they played were good, and the sound was a lot better than the astoria show.

that thing with bobby was hilarious, something from the good old days of the stooges. i hope that stupid cunt in the audience got his face smashed in.

Not totally smashed in, but someone will have a sore head in the morning.

I was in the front row, leaning on the barrier directly in front of Watt. I didn’t see anyone spitting at the stage, but the cigarette that landed near Gillespie was thrown by someone right behind me. Once Gillespie started spitting into the crowd (twice), I was pinned against the barrier as a surge started. The stand went into the crowd twice followed by the busted mic. It was all over as soon as Gillespie left the stage. As I’ve posted elsewhere, he was initially pissed because Mike Watt’s mic stand was too high for him and he couldn’t uncouple the mic itself, which left him looking like a bit of a prat.

I thought that J, Mike, George & Ron handled the situation brilliantly.

I also thought it was a great concert and have to agree with guapo, not enough Dino songs, but with J, Watt, Ron & George in full flow even playing Stooges it was BRILLIANT.

Someone was recording the show on a camera in the first floor seats and another person was between the barrier and the stage with a camcorder. Hopefully some of this footage will come to life so everyone can see it – just like the superb Camden Acoustic show J did last year.

I was taping some of that show for an article I’m doing on Watt. I’ll try and cut together a couple of tracks and post them – though I’m not sure how great the audio is going to be. We got kicked out of the press pit after 3 tracks, so the later stuff is only filmed from the sidelines.

If anyone has a good sound recording of that show I could overdub that audio onto my footage.

I got a few good snaps of Watt which I’ll post too, but not much J I’m afraid….

Out of the 20 odd times that I have seen them now, that was the second best. The next night in Brighton was absolutely amazing – much smaller venue, totally different set list (no everything flows, and not so many stooges but Just like Heaven and Blowin It/Live for that Look.

It’ll probably be another year before they come back here, it hardly seems worth going to anything else in the interim.

This was also the first time since FireHose that I have rated Mr Watt. OK, so Mike and Ron looked a little like David Bellamy and David Mellor, and Watt is undoubtedly the scariest man I have ever seen, and he may not sing quite as nicely as Bob Pollard, but fuck me can he play bass. Still, he does need to be locked up (don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone rock like that with a cigar hanging out of their mouths.)

Go see. And as for Bobby G. Always was a dick and WHERE ARE YOU NOW YOU PRICK. Being near to where the mic was getting smacked onto the crowd, I was looking around to have words with him, but I think that he was ejected fairly quickly. Lucky for him.

I’ve uploaded some photos from the Shepherd’s Bush gig at: http://redleaderindustries.com/mascis/index.shtml

Nothing fancy, and some of the later snaps are a bit fuzzy as they are grabbed from video. I’m putting some video clips together too, whci I will add to the page later. Does anybody have a good boot of the show? The sound on the video is pretty hairy (I was next to the speaker stack).

Enjoy.

Supreme props to Red Leader for this!!!

Hey, could a couple of you check out this to see if it streams for you? My first stint with windowsmedia on the site (they have a player for macs too).

The sound is horrible since the recording was done with a hand-held right next to the monitors.

Ron Asheton has joined the guys onstage and Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream is up on vocals. Everything seems to be going great
until some kids start spitting at him. Bobby retaliates by spitting back but when that is not enough he begins to bring the mic stand
down into the crowd like an axe!!!

Anyway, please let me know if you have any trouble viewing it coupled with browser/connection/os info
