I was just wondering how I stand up to other guitarists, so I got a bpm calculator http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/BeatsMinute.html and a got 297 bpm. I tried counting to see how many taps I could get in a second and I think the most I got was 12 (one finger). How about you freaksceners?

disgusting? I hope you mean that in a good way. I love him. He and Yngwie …..well, and Gilbert and Vai…are why I even want to play fast. Mix Vai and Buckethead together dude and you have some crazy kool stuff. I can play Buckeetheads stuff…I don’t know that I could play it any quicker right now, but give me time. "Hog Bitch Stomp" and "Giant Robot" are super songs for warming up/showing off to know it all guitarists who think they are better than everyone else because they play the "best" guitars out there. Dorks. I dont see why you should limit yourself in playing only what you hear J playing, or Kurt, etc. Its not about how other people play, be yourself…..if that means playing the slowest ever, do it….if that means you want to be faster than Micheal Angello Batio……go for it. Do not put limits on yourself, you’re not a musician then….you’re a friggin little circus monkey with a box…..and people throw crackers and coins at you. Be a musician…..but do it on your terms of course.
I’m not saying that this is what you were trying to imply, I’m just saying that it seems like every time I bring this BPM thing up on here I usually get bad responces or none at all.

What is Mattman up to these days?

Well thats cool for you, like you said everybody has their own thing but I was never interested in playing fast. Instead of sitting there hours on end trying to play something as fast as possible I just worked on my own style of playing. Sure I learnt a few solos by Metallica when i started playing but I found praticing a style i would never use boring. Sure I respect players who can play really fast but I just wouldn’t want to bring that into my music

same here. for the music i play it just wouldn’t fit in. For certains bands it sounds good, but if everyone did super speed solos in every band it’d be boring . It’s good to be different.

                      ok….maybe I didn’t say it right.

Tre Cool: he is an exceptional drummer in many different areas. The only thing is, you wouldn’t really know it. Green day doesn’t, well..didn’t have any place for a showboat drummer.
J Mascis: can play pretty friggin fast. It’s in J’s style, but its still fast when he wants to be.

I never said you should incorporate that into your music. I dont, there is no place in my music for that either. I’m just saying that….behind everything, you should try to be as good as can be. I haven’t practiced for hours on end in years. The stuff I play is along the lines of what you all play, theres not any room for Yngwie there, I wouldnt even attempt that. I also dont want to be just as good as my recordings, and never get any better. You wouldnt ever grow, you would stay in the same pool for years, and notice that other people are passing you up (which really isnt important anyways).
Im just saying be a well rounded musician….J is. Dont get stuck in a rut, play what you want.

Another example, I think it was Pat Smear who said: "I would hate to be someone like Mike Watt. You wouldn’t ever be able to go out on stage dressed as a clown, you HAVE to wear jeans and a flannel." Do you get where I’m going there?

                      RJ.

Well if I didnt put it in my music I would just be learning it for the purpose to "show off" in front of people and I’m not into that to be honest. I agree it is a good tool to have under your belt but if I were only to use it to try and show off how good a guitarist I am to others I think the hours of relentless practice is a waste of time. Please bear in mind that this is my opinion and we all think in different ways which makes us human beings, there isn’t a definite answer to whether you should or shouldn’t learn to play fast.

And for the record I think Mike Watt would wear a clown suit if he wanted to and I hate Pat Smear

Yeah, that Mike Watt/Pat Smear thing was supposed to used for an illustration….anyways.

I guess in my personall position, I have always felt like a terrible player when I go to someones house and all they know is metal. For a while, and even now I still dont really know any metal songs. Im not going to try to learn them either. I think that in my case, that if they play something fast and I just sit there….they think I suck, I know I don’t..I can just solo over top of whatever they’re playing. This way I can play with them instead of getting deer in headlights syndrome when they play some Slipknot or Lamb of God or something. Same goes with any style. Basically it’s not that I’m JUST trying to push people to play fast, I’m trying to push people to learn more than one style. Be it fast, slow, country (yeah….even if you don’t like the style….because you WILL find something/s you do like about it). That’s the important thing, being able to play with anyone….and any style. Being a well rounded musician.

Who said you have to use the fast playing to show off? Even if you only do it by yourself, it’s only going to help when you’re playing your stuff you like playing. The hard stuff you may come up with now, is going to get easier. PLUS I never said playing fast had to be Yngwie style. Dick Dale was fast….surf…..see what I mean.

Yes, be an individual. Do what you’re going to do, I’m just trying to give you ideas of how to play better/have more stamina. Lars Fredrickson (Rancid) was talking about how much stamina it took to play a 3 min. song that has all in 16th notes. That’s punk music. Learn some good ways to strum fast and work your wrist up (then there wont be hardly anyone that can beat you at arm wrestling hehe).

But, yeah…..now that that’s said, do you see what I’m talking about? By learning other styles, its only going to help you. Plus you can incorporate some of those things into your own style that will make you more of an individual, stand out from everyone else etc. J has a style all his own, if he didnt have that rounded collective style, how many people would listen? I don’t want to sound like everyone else. I dont want to sound like anyone else for that matter. These days that’s HARD to do, but you can do it. All this crap is coming from a ranting lunatic that’s had about 14 years of playing under his belt. I’ve played with a lot of people and learned from them, good and bad….and REALLY bad. I’m just trying to pass knowledge along. Take it or leave it, that’s all it is.

As a person whose passport says nationality: Swedish, I somehow feel inclined to defend Yngwie…. but let’s face it, there’s just no way you can compensate for a small penis by playing fast.
