My first dino album was without a sound and it is good so i brought bug. But bug is not as good as without a sound. Bug is missing everything that made without a sound very good (an instant 90′ hit along with all CREED albums). When I put it into my CD player All i could hear was noise and j mascis could not sing very loud. Freak scene is OK but is ruined by a noise guitar bit in the middle. Probaly because j could’nt play guitar very well back then. But he sure improved with a hit ‘feel the pain’ and ‘i dont think so’. Bug songs sound all the same and have no good choruses like good CREED songs. Just as well J got some guitar lessons before he made without a sound. No bones is to slow and messy, they always come is to messy, yeah we know is to slow and messy, let it ride is fucking messy, pond song is the best song on the album but still to messy, budge is too short, the post is too slow, last song ‘dont’ shows that j really needs guitar lessons. there is no fat tune in here only coz j wasnt good on guitar. But I like the album cos J tried and tried until he made ‘feel the pain’. I think I’ll stick to without a sound, creed albums, and Hybrid theory by linkin park
Without a Sound is a great album, tons of great songs. But then I feel that way about all J’s stuff…too each their own

But hey that whole sticking to creed & linkin park along with Without A Sound…sounds like a plan if thats what you like
mjw666: Hi. I think if Bug was recorded today with the same professionality as "without a sound" and "where you been" or by some pro studioegineer, you would probably like the album a lot more.
what you say about the songs being messy is probably due to the shrill guitarsounds like in the solo on "let it ride" and the end of "freakscene" etc… with a more proffesional recording with more budget this album would sound great in your ears, too..
You have to be kidding us. Bug is a masterpiece of guitar texturing. There are things he did on that album that he hasn’t done since except maybe alone or More Light. Don’t is one of the best guitar solos I have ever heard so I really don’t know what smoke your cracking, but if you are for real I can see that you have no taste being that you compare without a sound with creed and linkin park. I wish you would burn your dino albums and go listen to evansense. J is not Steve Vai the brilliance of the music is how he layers and textures different melodies and harmonies. He plays the same basic formations on the guitar sometimes using a capo to change the key. There is no mystery to the technique it is the beauty in the furry that is the essence of Dinosaur Jr. Without a Sound lacked this ferocity and in that created movement with the space in between which is what I love about it but feel the pain is a throw away in my book. Feel the pain is one of J’s worst songs and shows little technical guitar proficiancy. I learned to play that on a guitar when I was 17 and could barely play from a magazine, yet I still haven’t figured out most of bug because of the layers. Now there are some old fans who stopped listening to Dino around Green Mind because Lou left and the songs became more popy. I love the new stuff but you have to understand the context. Oh and I agree with anthony, buy the vinyl and crank it up louder. Anyway I hope this was a joke and that there aren’t people who listen and compare Dino with Linkin Park and Creed. Music is subjective so listen to whatever you want I don’t care I am just in shock that you have such varied taste. Also ever listen to Dinosaur, now that album sucked. I would admit J coudn’t play guitar as well as he can now what some 16 years later, but it just sucked. A couple songs were cool and we still hear them but compared to Creed an over produced money machine it sounds horrible, yet the songs are still better songs than can I take you higher, to a place where blind men see.
I once saw an interview with J & The Fog where Watt said Creed were his fav band from Florida, along with Matchbox something or other
It wasn’t on aprils fools day but close enough… :aliensmile: ps Dinosaur was made for about 600 bucks
Sorry, I wrote this bug review as a joke to be amused by negative replies and to confuse you people. Unfortunatly, you people now think I’m an idiot which is’nt worth it coz your replies werent’ angry and negative enough. DAMN!!. Oh yeah, I dont like creed or Linkin park they really blow.
I think that listening to derivative, soulless music like Creed and Linkin Park has warped your mind.
Dinosaur Jr’s discography definetely has a historical progression and Bug is one amazing part of that. Songs on that album are pure brilliance (though I consider all Dinosaur’s songs to be) – some of my favourites are ‘Yeah we know’, ‘Budge’, ‘Let it ride’ and ‘Pond song’ could possibly be the best song ever! I suggest you get a copy on vinyl as it suits the production values, pour yourself a beer, sit back and let the music re-tune you mind.

Creed and Linkin Park are pure shit, go out and buy some more Dinosaur Jr/J.Mascis & the fog albums, then download some acoustic shows and you’ll soon be selling those Creed CD’s on ebay and replacing them with Dinosaur Jr CD’s.
