Some Canadians I like:
Jane Siberry
the Band
Rush (I used to like them when I was quite a lot younger, still think that ‘Tom Sawyer’ and ‘the Spirit of Radio’ are great songs!)September 23, 2001 at 11:34 am #65646Jane Siberry has roots in my province,I think she was born in Ontario, but I think her family is from here;I never was that into her but she is better then some other canadian artists.
Unpredictable too,in an interview for her fav music pick, she picked a Brazilian jazz song.I thought that was cool.
Ever hear of Holly Cole?she was born here, she did a Tom Waits tribute album a few years ago, some songs work better then others, but her version of"Heart Of Saturday Night" and low key take on "I don`t wanna grow up"(totally diffrent then the Ramones take on it)are pretty good.September 23, 2001 at 4:05 pm #65647I like her earlier stuff better,in a jazz vein, then she decided to switch to a more pop career, the Waits tribute is good, check that one out, some of her recent stuff I`m not into, you may like it though.
Lanois is a good producer, his music is`nt for everyone`s taste, cool guy nonetheless,he was on the Nightmusic show when Sonic Youth played I Wanna Be Your Dog,I was telling Allison about this awhile ago;Lanois was strumming an acoustic and laughing, the indigo girls sang back up which was funny.
Bettie Serveert recorded in Lanois`s studio in New Orleans for their Lamprey album;so did Giant Sand, that`s why Peter Visser from the Betties played a guitar solo on one of the songs from GS`s Glum album.September 24, 2001 at 2:42 am #65648I have heard of Holly Cole, only song I know (and have on a compilation somewhere) is a cover-version of Costello’s ‘Alison’, great cover, by the way, I will check if the Amsterdam record-shops have anything from her, I will be working there again next week…
Another great Canadian: Daniel Lanois!

But to get back to the topic again: the Cash Brothers, are they Canadian? I like their two albums a lot…October 4, 2001 at 4:36 pm #65650The Cash Brothers are canadian, one brother was in the Skydiggers, the other was in old punk bands in Quebec and eventually went a more pop direction,he did a very Neil Young influenced album in the early 90`s which was a sort of return to a more louder guitar sound.
I have`nt heard any Cash Brothers material, that what happens when you don`t listen to the radio as often as you used to,but it sounds good.I was`nt into the Skydiggers much, some songs were ok,but when they started reminding me of Blue Rodeo that`s not a good thing.Blue Rodeo appeared recently on an album by the Sadies,an Ontario alt country band, the drummer was from here, used to play in a otherwise all female band called Jale, they were cool, did 2 albums for Sub Pop,now broken up,anyway the most recent Sadies album was produced by Steve Albini, can`t seem to imagine Albini and Blue Rodeo,Those of you who don`t know Blue Rodeo, they`re a country rock band here in Canada, one of Canada`s more popular bands,I`m not into them.
In terms of alt country bands The Guthries from here are cool, some people may not like them but if you like Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks you`ll dig them.I know the guitarist/singer,not really well, but I`ve talked to him last summer about music,he wanted to know if I had any Cotton Mather albums,I did`nt but I heard of them, they`re a band from Texas in a Big Star type vein.We also talked about Richard Buckner and Gillian Welch.
den buck,if you see the Guthries album over there in Holland, check it out.October 4, 2001 at 8:02 pm #65651Hi Salamiguy,
I’m with you on Holly Cole; prefer her more jazz-oriented style as well.
You reminded me of one of my favorite performers, Diana Krall, whom I believe is also Canadian. (She sings mostly standards & rocks them hard!)
xo
RosaOctober 5, 2001 at 10:48 am #65652Rosa-Holly Cole said once that she gave up on jazz stuff because of the lounge revival, she did`nt want to be thrown in with that.
Diana Krall is cool,I usually like older jazz then today`s jazz, but Diana is someone I like;I first heard her in 1994 on a jazz show here in Canada, she was just starting out and was working on her second album,Only Trust Your Heart,I guess that was the one that got her attention,I think over the last few years she`s problably the top selling jazz artist in the world. She`s from Nanaimo,British Columbia which is on the other side of Canada then where i`m at.
I love old standards!Sinatra,Bennett,Holiday,Fitzgerald,Vaughan, etc.all great singers;some people think those old songs are sappy and wimpy,I don`t think so,those writers were brilliant-Porter,Berlin,Kern,Rogers/Hart,etc.October 5, 2001 at 9:09 pm #65653Salamiguy wrote:

Quote:anyway the most recent Sadies album was produced by Steve AlbiniThat is their ‘Pure Diamond Gold’ album, I’ve got that. It’s a strange album, going through a lot of styles, from garage-rock, via surf, to real ‘hillbilly-country’. Highlight: ‘Eastwinds’ with Catherine Irwin from Freakwater on vocals, haunting stuff!!!
Have heard of the Guthries, haven’t seen anything from them here in Holland, but I will check them out!
October 5, 2001 at 9:17 pm #65654I`m going to the music store tommorow where Dale from the Guthries works, hopefully he`ll be there.
The Sadies album sounds good, gotta check that out.October 9, 2001 at 6:35 pm #65655Squirrel-a band from Ontario, they put out a very impressive album in 95 called Niagra, kinda Sonic Youth like, the singer reminds me of Thurston.Their bass player died around the time of the albums release, they did another album a year or so ago in more of a shoegazer mode(Slowdive/Lush type stuff),I think they should have stuck with the SY stuff.
If anyone see`s that album Niagara around,it`s worth checking out,great sound too-very loud.October 9, 2001 at 6:38 pm #65656Hey Salamiguy,
I liked some of the Doughboys stuff, some pretty cool sounds there. Wicked live show as well
Allison
October 10, 2001 at 11:04 am #65657Some of the Doughboys stuff was good, they were into Husker,I`ve seen them wearing Minutemen t shirts in their videos.
Once a girl at the college station interviewed them,I did`nt hear it until she said months later that they were total assholes in the interview, since this girl was a local scenster and had alot of friends in the local scene when word got out and when they played here most people boycotted the show, except the people who was`nt connected to the scensters.
I did`nt hear the interview but she said they were`nt nice at all, downright rotten.
Here`s some trivia-their song Shine is about Melissa from Tinker/Hole/Smashing Pumpkins. -
