I liked Mansons cover of Surrender, and well Sweet Dreams.

Nirvana: My best friends girls, Love Buzz, the money will roll right in, D7, most of the Incesticide album was a cover, even covered thier own song (new wave Polly) and everything else they ever did.

Anything J has ever done and ever will do, is good.
If J’s next album was $5 for a recording on J pushing record, walking through the door, and then "farting on a snare drum," (airheads) I would buy it…..who cares as long as its a really good one?

I like what Randy Jane covers….if I didnt, I wouldnt cover it.

Buckethead has some good covers too….I can play most of them though.

Wild Horses- The Sundays (Blind)

Anticipation- J Mascis (on Martin + Me)

Can’t Take My Eyes off of You- Lauryn Hill (the Miseducation of …)

I can’t wait to hear J do "Leavin’ On a Jet Plane" since that was my favorite 45 record when I was a little girl. I played it over and over

"Dinosaur Jr’s version of Hot Burrito # 2 was better than Gram’s though. No other opinions accepted."

this is totally not true. j’s version is not bad, but its definitely not better. for one thing, j changes the lyrics, and its not for the better:

fbb: ‘you better love me/jesus christ’
dj: ‘you better love me/it’s not tonight’

j doesnt maintain the emotion that is in gram’s voice when he sings ‘jesus christ’. thats one of the best moments of the song, and to change it just doenst make sense.

as for other songs:

yo la tengo is the best cover band ever. you can say this without insult, though, because their original material is great as well. ‘fakebook’ is a brilliant album and its mostly all covers.

darcy clay — ‘jolene’. beats the hell out of the white stripes cover of that song.

dump — ‘everlasting love’. maybe this could fall under the ‘yo la tengo is the best cover band ever’ statement.

scud mountain boys — ‘please, mr., please’. beats the hell out of olivia newton john.

the move — ‘the last thing on my mind’. its not better than the tom paxton folk original, but this version rocks, lasts like seven minutes, and is just fucking awesome.

Shade-I like the Sundays cover of Wild Horses too.
Buckingham Rabbit-Yo La Tengo do some great covers for sure, their cover of Fleetwood Mac`s Dreams is pretty funny, they kinda wreck it,I get a kick out of it.The best cover I think they`ve done is Blondie`s Dreaming.Wire`s Too Late I dig as well.
Have you heard that Dump album of Prince songs?check that out.

In my opinion, these covers were better than the originals.

Nirvana – Love Buzz
Dinosaur Jr – Show Me the Way
Jimi Hendrix – All along the Watchtower

Does anyone agree?

J definitely did Show Me the Way a lot better than the original…

also agree with the Sundays cover of Wild Horses being better than the Stones version…

misc:

16Volt – Turning Japanese
16Volt – Theme from the Love Boat (anyone heard this… hehe….)

I agree also on Show Me The Way,Dino did a wicked version of it.
All Along The Watchtower I agree also,Hendrix did a great cover of that.I like Neil Young`s version of it too.
The Love Boat Theme?I`ll check that out, thanks Siph, that should be fun.

what about the flying burrito brothers version of ‘wild horses’? i think it was actually recorded before the stones did it, even though they wrote it. they let gram parsons and company record it cause gram was teaching them how to be country. their version is great, better than the sundays i think. stones too.

Yeah,I like the Flying Burrito Brothers version of Wild Horses too.The story goes that Gram arranged the country version they did of Honky Tonk Women and they let the FBB record Wild Horses.

my cover of daydream believer is up again. http://www.geocities.com/bobbydutch/aboutme.html not that it’s necessarily better than the original or any good at all.

Hey,

I know there aren’t a lot of Manson fans here, but their cover of Tainted Love is just too good…I had to mention it.

Rosa, I didn’t like the Manson cover, especially since he/they didn’t rip off the supremes at the end, like in the origional.

Can’t forget-Nirvana doing Bowie’s man who sold the world.

The Saints did a wicked version of a Connie Francis song…Lipstick on Your Collar. May not be better than the original but its pretty damn cool
