One of the top five shows I’ve ever seen. I had no idea they were such virtuosos. Three of the songs were so pretty, tears came to my eyes. They made me proud to be an American for the first time in a long time. The guitar solos were never boring or self-indulgent. They were consistently inventive and expressive. I’ve never seen anyone get so much out of the bass. An Ampeg seemed to be used for bass tones, and a Marshall for treble tones. At times it was thundering bass, sometimes a rhythm guitar, and even lead at times. The drums were outstanding; spare cymbal use, lots of tom-tom tones, and flourishes that made you jump out of your skin. The Gypsy Tea Room is the best venue I’ve been to for what it does. If there was a criticism, the show was over stimulating. After 35 minutes, it felt like they had been playing for two hours. I had to go get a drink and chill for a minute. The energy level is intense. I heard all sorts of influences in their music from root to stones to jam. The band seemed to be having a good time and the members were committed to making each other sound their best. Don’t miss this tour. oh yeh, the singing was fantastic.

Thanks for the comments here. I just wandered in looking for a reason to pull myself to attend ANYTHING located in Myrtle Beach, SC. Still scratching my head as to how in the hell Dinosaur Jr PICKED House of Blues… I admit, the idea of seeing Lou, J, and Murph together again is somewhat enticing even though 95% of all reunion tours tend to be an embarrassment and painful at best. I am still on the fence on this one but this review and some of the other comments are leading me to take the plunge and drive to this hell hole. The amount of beautiful racket that Dinosaur Jr produced on the You’re Living All Over Me tour STILL lives as force in my mind despite them once doing a show that lasted a sum total of 20 minutes (they had done something of this nature in Europe and thought it cool….I had driven three hours and was less amused). Reading your post made me wonder a bit more, almost to the point of hitting BUY…. almost….

Don’t pass up the chance. I’ve seen them five times in the past year, and as great as the summer shows were, the NYC shows in Dec absolutely blew them away. The level of musical interaction between the three of them is off the charts, and they’re all playing at the top of their respective games. I have a feeling that they’ll be taking a long break after this tour, so don’t be a fool.

In a loosly related oddity – they used to have a J signed guitar hanging up at the Rock & Roll Cafe at Myrtle Beach. I am often suprised at the shows the HOB gets down there.

His old stickered up Jazzmaster is at the EMP

I assume you mean the Hard Rock Cafe. I’ve driven by it more than a few times, trying hard to ignore its existence, although tough since it’s right next to the even more horrifying Planet Hollywood, another blight on the Myrtle Beach landscape. I have never even entered a Hard Rock Cafe and find it a bit disconcerting that J Mascis would have anything up on the wall, let along a guitar. Let’s hope he didn’t do this for money. Even bands like Trans-Am reportedly turned down $150,000 to use one of their songs in a Hummer commercial. Good for them, although it’s hard to believe. I will never forget the day I was sitting in some cheesy diner near little Ogden, NC and suddenly heard the unmistakable opening bars of White Elephant, from the Volcano Suns. It was a sorry GAP JEANS ad of all things.

On the other hand, I have to admit that hearing the opening bars of White Elephant coming out of a 20" TV hung in the corner of this sleepy, southern coastal town diner was akin to hearing one’s dead Grandmother asking to "pass the salt." There was a certain beauty involved but when thinking of the Volcano Suns in a GAP Jeans ad, I felt more like turning myself in to the Thought Police or the local rednecks with the trucks with wheels taller than Jesus.

That’s what’s happening to Myrtle Beach now? I hear they’re closing the amusement park where my favorite haunted house was… :( god, I think that’s where I first realized what sexual attraction was…

yep – that is what I mean – hard rock cafe.

I asked J about it way back and he said he had no idea it was there. A lot of times they pick up things at auctions and such. I read in Rolling Stone way back that J submitted some stuff for a Nike commercial that was not picked up. I think it was around the time he did the Puffy remix of Victory that was not released as well. Would be interesting to hear about that sometime ;)

Yeah, well…. it’s time to decide as I need to leave this place in a bit to head down there. For some reason, I cant seem to shake the doubt of how well a show will go off in Myrtle Beach, SC. Just how many will actually show up? Cat’s Cradle in Chapel Hill will be packed to the gills with mutants and the curious, old and new but somehow, the Myrtle Beach House of Blues equation just seems questionable. I suppose someone if bored beyond kin might wonder why not head to the Chapel Hill show. Seems my wife is going with her sister and her 13 year old son to the MB show. In addition, a "new boyfriend" is in the mix. The only way I could attend would be if stone cold drunk and riding along locked in the trunk, only to be let out around show time, just in time to see Lou/J/Murph launch into The Lung at the volume of an approaching Boeing 737….

I’ve seen too many shows over the years and had almost given up after the last Guided by Voices Love-Fest left me feeling waaay too old as if attempting the impossible just one too many times.

This Dinosaur Jr show would have to be something momentous….something that would break out of the mold, much like a Cornelius show.

Trouble is, I’ve had Dinosaur, Living All Over Me, and Bug all rotating on my turntable for the last few hours, tryin to get the motivation up. Man, this is great stuff. The line, "Embarrassed to be Alive" is one in a million. Can I endure The Humans that might amass at House of Blues without resorting to hypnosis? I guess I had better decide….

Perhaps the post of the day….. Ole Chevy couldnt have said it any better. If only I wasnt with them all for three hours before the show. The cat is sitting here looking scared. DONT is currently playing on the table, rotating at near 11 via EL-34 tube amps into 100dB Klipsch Cornwall horns. It’s an amazing sound. Could live in 2006 live up to my distorted "high water" memory of them in 87? Your post has convinced me to find out.

J’s solos are always self-indulgent. But that’s the great thing about them, he’s always pushing to get them perfect and to beat the one before. When an artist is trying to beat himself, it’s always better than when they’re trying to pacify a fan.
