When I first saw Dino Jr. back together on T.V. I must say, I was not impressed, especially with the horrible effect J was using, sounds like it chops out every other split second of sound, I don’t know what effect it is really, but it is horrendous as far as I’m concerned. So anyway, I still bought tickets to see Dino Jr. in boston because they have always been one of my favorite bands, but I listened to the stuff from Spaceland and he uses this terrible effect on some other songs there too.
I hate this effect, when he uses it the songs just get destroyed.
I was just wondering if anyone else feels the same way and knows what effect I am talking about. Some of my long time Dino. Jr. fan friends feel the same way.
I just want to get a hold of J. and tell him to just lose the effect…other than that things have sounded alright though.
I don’t mean to be a pushy son of a bitch about this, just wondering if anyone feels the same way.
I’m new to the board, by the way.

its a tremelo pedal and I think it sounds cool…
i come from instrumental surf music and its an essential sound along w/ reverb-which I can hear J use also.
i know he used to have a Fender Tube Reverb Unit in his signal chain…
and it is an acquired taste but J uses it alot so ya better get used to it

I agree with Stanner, the tremelo is cool, but I too am I big surf guitar fan.

One of my favorite Dinosaur jr moments was at a show in Ohio on the Hand it Over tour. J was using a tremelo and I believe a clone theory during a long solo. It created a sound, that my friend described as playing ping pong because the tremolo was choppy, and it was bouncing between all the different amps. I’ve seen J live a good 15-20 times, and that was the only time I’ve seen him do that.

I don’t mind it so much. I noticed the effect on the TV performance and thought it made the song sound a little choppy but I also liked that it sort of changes the sound a little. If J just got up there and played every song exactly as it sounds on the albums it would be boring. That said, I hope he doesn’t use it in every song.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but you are just nuts. The tremolo is awesome. Its one of the coolest effects he has. I remember when he first got it and played it at the end of sludgefest and I almost lost my cookies.

I agree and I just got a great history of the Tremolo from my husband, who with his voice does great imitations of J’s Tremolo effect, it’s really great.
I got the whole history of the addition of tremolo to the amp, which was just a couple of big springs. Very cool lesson.

I agree, that effect is mind lifting and just fun.

It’s cool but I can see how it could be unliked. I think the problem with it during the Late Late Show appearance is that it cut the volume. If it was turned up it would have sounded fine

of course! he’s played that tune a thousand times and the tremelo doesnt drop down in volume-BUT its T V!!

Stan, I am not sure about the drop in volume, my husband doesn’t play guitar but he is into sound and the physics of sound etc…
HE told me tremelo is in essence volume or amplitude modulation

He took me to a web-site with this example:

check it out! Simulated Tremolo
Animated Scope Tremolo will always show up as amplitude or volume going up and down. This is typical of most amplifiers. i.e. Fender etc., even some newer Estey/Magnatone amplifiers.

well, I just wanted to see if anyone felt the same way, I guess no one does really. I don’t want them playing just like the album, but I just don’t dig the effect one bit…I dont know…it just takes away from the songs, for me that is.
I’m a big fan of sounds and strange effects, but this one just doesn’t tickle my fancy.
But anyway, it’s good to see that people like it, because if everyone felt the way I do it would make for pretty shitty times.
I’m still really excited to see Dinosaur Jr. though, I’ve seen J. a bunch and I ran into him at a couple shows (Ian Mackaye and his new band in Worcester and Morrissey in Boston) at the Ian Mackaye show me and my friend asked him if their would be a Dino Jr. reunion (this was right before J was playing a show in north hampton alongside the likes of Lou Barlow) he said there wouldn’t be one because no one could find Murph. Then at the show there was a Deep Wound reunion, god that made me happy.
anyway, I’m digressing.

i mean on the lung he used flange on the album i believe (could be wrong) i thought that was cooler but i think the tremelo definetely works for the lung.. and for freakscene. but i dont think it works during the intro lead to Just like Heaven. just my opinion.. still rocks when he does it.. i just think the straight up distorted riff sounded better.

Wow, you were at the show where they reunited Deep Wound? That’s awesome! After reading a couple of stories of you guys hanging out with J and the band, I’m hoping I get that opportunity at the Boston show. I doubt I will but it would be so cool to have a drink with the boys.

On the album he used a clone theory which is chorus and vibratto.

ah i see, i allways just use flange for the ending when i play it with my band, sounds decent enough.
