Early Dinosaur Jr. Albums Unearthed and Reissued

Verily, Surefire Records is doing the work of the Indie Rock Gods. The Brattleboro, Vermont distributor is set to spend 2003 flooding the world with recordings of the seminal J Mascis/Lou Barlow incarnation of Dinosaur Jr., and their related and prior projects. You see, way back in 1981, before they became Dinosaur Jr. (or even just Dinosaur), Messrs. Mascis and Barlow formed Deep Wound, a hardcore quartet based out of Westfield, MA. While Deep Wound’s four-year output was miniscule (one seven-inch, an EP released in 1983 on Radiobeat Records, and a handful of singles), the music provides a sonogram of the musicians who would go on to release such indie rock yardsticks as You’re Living All Over Me and Bug. The as-yet-untitled Deep Wound collection will contain tracks from an out-of-print German bootleg, along with the entirety of the seven-inch, and a handful of previously unreleased live tracks. That said, even if they had been available before, would you have known? Exactly. In the interest of speculation, we here at the ‘Fork have done a little research and are willing to offer up some tracks that comprised both the band’s EP and the seven-inch bootleg release:Radiobeat EP:

11 Video PrickEven more thrilling is the fact that Surefire needs your help compiling the Deep Wound liner notes! If anyone has visual documentation of Deep Wound doing their thing– photos, handbills, DNA test printouts– please contact the distributor through their website. No, seriously, contact them. Quit being so selfish and learn to share, goddammit!
As for the much-easier-to-document Dinosaur Jr., Surefire is planning to release that band’s 1985 debut Dinosaur, 1987’s You’re Living All Over Me, (#40 in Pitchfork’s recent Top 100 of the 1980s, by the way), 1988’s Bug, and 1991’s singles-roundup Fossils. All re-releases will contain yet-to-be-determined bonus tracks. While no release dates have been announced, it’s likely that the releases will be spread out over the course of summer 2003, so as not to ignite too much frenzy among the masses and Michael Azerrad. The only question that remains is why? Well, let’s turn the mic over to Surefire distribution head Dave Sweetapple to answer that one: "I want to spread some new interest for the grandfathers of this scene among the indie kids who might not know who they were." Poor Mascis: 38 and already a grandpa. Who knew those loins would be so fertile?

Excellent! Am looking forward to getting all the reish’s on CD. I am right in thinking the s/t first Dino has never been released on disc, right?
The first Dinosaur Jr LP was released on CD too. It was called Dinosaur. The first release was self-titled before J decided (or was forced, depending on how you look at it) to change the band name from Dinosaur to Dinosaur Jr in the late 1980’s. It was on Homestead record and has been out of print for a while. The release that is sometimes referred to as S/T or Dinosaur Jr is actually the Little Fury Things single. I guess the reason why the Little Fury Things single is sometime called Dinosaur Jr or S/T is becasue on the cover it has a picture and just says "Dinosaur Jr". It also only says Dinosaur Jr. on the side of the disc or vinyl. The Little Fury Things single was released on SST records and is also out of print. Nothing that was released on Homestead Records or SST Records is in print anymore. Hence the reason why stuff is going to be reissued. Hope that makes sense.
yeah rd, I had no idea about the ST confusion. I will try to keep that in mind, conversationally, for the future. I was talking about the 1st full length, as I had heard it was only out on vinyl or cassette, but you and Rosa cleared this up for me. Thank you

Okay, now I’m really confused. I was going to tell everyone that you could still order old Dino. albums from http://www.sstsuperstore.com but when I just went in there to verify this, I couldn’t find any dino. music for sale! I just bought BUG and YLAOM a few months ago on CD from this site. What’s going on?
About the Dinosaur album on homestead….there is usually at least one up for auction on ebay. I somehow managed to pick up a new copy of it on CD a few years back from a record store…must’ve been sitting in the back somewhere collecting dust.
I was lucky, I found the Dinosaur cd used in mint condition in Minneapolis for three bucks in 1991 :aliensmile: I have never seen it again in any record stores I’ve been in.
We also had a reqest from Dave Sweetapple from Surefire for pics from early Dinosaur Jr shows & Deep Wound a long time ago. Someone sent us some great pics, we should put them up in the album

ahhh but im guessing there being nice to us people with no money – a frenzy of releases can be veeeerrry expensive
– but the whole reissues thing is comming together and sounds llike they’ll be greeeat. if they do it as a frenzy hopefully it’ll be around my birthday
– that would make a lovely present I recently picked up the original issue of dinosaur on vinyl in truely mint condition for seven english pounds. yes, your right, I was chuffed!!!
