Hybridge – No one is really sure why the Japanese JMJM pickups come with that design. The ‘Case’ for lack of a better work is a jazzmaster shape, but the winding are like that of a strat. The Japanese may feel that a single coil is a single coil, who knows.

The Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore models, again, are not humbuckers. They come with Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Jazzmaster pickups that are replica’s of the Jazzmaster’s from the 60’s. Antiquity I replicate Jazzmaster’s from th elate 50’s when they first came out. They’re a bit darker, the 60’s are sweeter, livlier IMO.

All American made Jazzmaster’s, like your 62′ reissue, come with traditionally designed Jazzmaster pickups and sound quite good as they come. They might be a little on the bright side, but they get a lot of great tone’s out of them.

In order to identify a humbucker pickup you must know that they are two single coil pickups put together. They cancel out the hum by this design. With covers on you will see the adjustable magnet screws set off to the side. The other coil is covered and has non adjustable magnets. When the cover is removed, you will see two single coils put together and the two rows of magnets exposed.

I just looked up your Hello Kitty Strat. That is indeed a humbucker, but it doesn’t look the the poles are adjustable. I’m a fan of humbuckers, I don’t make hard grunge music like J and my solos are neater. Yet, personally, J is the guitarist that inspires me the most, just not to replicate his style. No artist does or should really. If you go on craigslist, where I found my JMJM, you should be able to pick one up for $650.00, again like I did. I’ve even heard of store selling them brand new for near that price. Remember 15% off of a new purchase. Buying used from a private seller saves taxes.

        Thanks Obsequio–

I think you’re right that the Thurston Moore model Jazzmaster has antiquity pickups but I think the Lee Ranaldo signature model has humbucking pickups with chrome covers, not the white soapbar pickup covers. Someone who lives around  ten miles away  from me was selling their personally signed Lee Ranaldo Jazzmaster on Craigslist a few weeks ago and I was gawking it, it’s a real nice guitar, though I imagine it doesn’t have the traditional Jazzmaster tone.

I hear ya re. emulating tone, not playing style, right on. I can’t do either but like all the overtones and feel of a Jazzmaster; playing one is a buzz.

Thanks also for the advices re. finding a JMJM on CL. I found both my electric guitars on Craigslist; the Hello Kitty Squier is an Affinity series and is about the best $100 I ever spent. It stays in tune forever and plays great, no rough fret edges or bridge issues  like other Squier Affinity series I’ve played.

I had a silver sparkle made in China Jagmaster with dual humbuckers that was cheap, sounded/felt good, and was  fun to play but it wouldn’t stay  in tune. I brought it to Michael Dolan and while he improved it some, even he couldn’t fix it. Also had a Japanese Vista series Jagmaster that was great but  I couldn’t deal with the short scale neck. The ’62 reissue is the nicest guitar I’ve ever played or owned; I’m not worthy.

I don’t often see the J Mascis signature JM on Craigslist locally; when they do come up for sale they’re usually $800-1000, what a used AVRI Jazzmaster costs. I played a friend’s Squier Telecaster recently and it had such killer tone and played so nice the next guitar I get’ll probably be a cheap Tele, but I’ll keep keeping an eye out for a J Mascis signature model.

The JMJM doesn’t have the standard Japanese Jazzmaster pickups (the ones that are wound like strats and aren’t wax potted). J had the pickups wound to his specs, so they are actually not bad. Mine sounds great.

Had time just now to poke around F S and read stuff. Thanks for the radio interview link Jeremiah…..Does j have gum in his mouth again? I listened with headphones and I had to pull them out in a hurry. That sound, of something in his mouth, was a bit hard to stomach. Dude?

Hybridge – I should have looked up the Lee Ranaldo JM before responding. I forgot that they are indeed Wide Range Humbucking pickups, which has the magnets offset. I’ve never played on them so I really don’t know what they sound like. I’d have to look into what others know about the Lee Ranaldo model. My source for all this information is offsetguitars.com

tonas- I remember reading some promotion or advertising that the Japanese JMJM pickups were made to J’s specs, but this information is false. They are the Japanese standard JM pickup. I changed them myself in mine and again J had his changed out by Curt Novak.

Looks like the japanese release of the album has a bonus track “Black Betty” (a cover is my guess)

It will be on Hostess Entertainment
The Japanese edition “I Bet On Sky” is available for pre-order on Amazon Japan – http://amzn.to/N7cXhE

Would seem odd that it’s a ‘famous’ cover , I mean I know a lot of people here had heard of the other Dino cover songs before, but this surely has to be the biggest ‘hit’ they would have recorded for a studio release. Maybe it’s Lou’s 3rd song ?

What utter bollocks – I’m guessing just like heaven completely makes my point stupid, I retract the above statement – bam ba lam

Plus Show me the way, Quicksand…. I’ll go away now and think about what I’ve done.

Nah, empire, you’re right. Black Betty has been used in movies and commercials galore. Although I absolutely love Just Like Heaven, it really is only known by Cure fans and Dinosaur fans. Quicksand wasn’t really that renowned of a Bowie song, but the Dino cover was amazing . And finally, Show Me The Way wasn’t that enjoyable of a cover to me no matter how popular the original was.

Cool @empire2 ! Would love to see multiple versions with different bonus tracks even if my wallet tells me otherwise 😉

Amazon (US) is now taking pre-orders for Dinosaur Jr I Bet On Sky too:
                            CD http://amzn.to/NsTkpC
                            Vinyl http://amzn.to/NsTkpD

No mention of bonus tracks or mp3 versions as with the itunes one. Also still no previews available yet….. (Crossing my fingers!)

I have already made my preorder on itunes although I am willing to bet that is the version of “Pond Song” from the Bug Live DVD / LP release.

I wonder if they will be putting together any more of those Direct to fan bundles like they did for the Bug live DVD with the release of I Bet on Sky…

Jeremiah – I preordered on itunes as well. The price made sense. I also preordered the vinyl. I’m assuming “Pond Song” is from the 9:30 Club performance as well.

Dinosaur Jr’s marketing has drastically improved in the past two years. They really are able to put a few things together and sell it to the hardcore fans. I’m enjoying them taking my money! (As long as their putting out cool stuff). I’m anticipating some cool things to come out for “I bet on Sky” We’ll see…

I agree – Maybe Lou and Murph dolls 🙂

Yes, I’m going with the pre-order digital which seems to be the same worldwide, Plus the 7″ single! Newbury comics have done some stuff before so I will be following them and also the guy that did the artwork.
Several shades had some LTD signed by artist and J which I bought and love!

Also I will have the ALBUM tomorrow – can’t wait! (last time I’ll mention it 😉
