Dinosaur: Originators of EMO?

Over the years I’ve heard many people say that they are sometimes considered the originators of EMO…..

just wondering if you guys agree or disagree….

No,I don`t agree though everyone thinks whoever in music is emo Tom Jones might the godfather of emo
Dino played with a fierce energy but J`s vocals are very un-emo.Yes,emotional but J did`nt have to scream to get what he was trying to say across.
DC bands like Rites Of Spring in my mind were the first emo.
I think we should have a genre called emu

I think Lou invented the indie folk genre(or at least had a big hand in it).Stuff like Elliot Smith,Iron And Wine,and Hayden owe some debt to Lou.

rites of spring for sure. This is completely off topic but, id say the first band that started hardcore is the stooges. Listen to seek and destroy, comon.

i think some kids from ohio who dont know how to play invented emo after coming out of a 3 day prozac and ecstacy binge and deciding to make music. hey we dont know how to play an insstrument, lets just invent a whole new genre where we dont have to be able to play and kids will like it…. because of out shimmery man chests and tom tom hair do’s .. you will like the przactesy you will..

every musician out there and artist that writes songs is somewhat emotional. so anything that’s NOT emo is emotionless? i don’t get the whole thing. but i do understand the whole ‘sound’ most "emo" bands have. and Dinosaur Jr. doesn’t sound anything like that.

but they could of inspired some "emo" bands, who knows. music have many different sounds and variations – and to catergorize or label them based on "emotion" is just so narrowminded.

Nah. Emo means emotional hardcore. So it’s really a narrower definition then ’emotional.’

I strongly disagree with this fact firstly even if you were to label them and try put them into groups even if you would classifiey them as emo it really doesnt matter a whole lot they were a 1980’s band they could be whoever they wanted to be they were around before the so called emo fashion trend and i myself think that thier music doesnt sound the slightest bit emo altho of course like most music emo is shown…

There is absolutely no way that Dinosaur Jr were the originators of emo. Rites of Spring are largely considered to be the godfathers of emo. emo is a sissy offspring of hardcore punk. Dinosaur Jr is not sissy.

be honest with yourselves.. dinosaur is melancholy, packed in distorted guitars etc. that qualifies for emo

Husker Du, I think, had a role in shaping what would become "emo," as did Dag Nasty, especially once Peter Cortner joined the band (Wig Out at Denko’s & Field Day).
