If we look at where Emo came from an argument can be made that Dinosaur does have some relation to it. Emo came from hardcore, and Dinosaur came from Deep Wound (a hardcore band). Obviously J took hardcore and did something with it (to create his unique sound), and so did the other Emo bands. I would have to agree that Rites of Spring were the originators of Emo, but that may only be lyrically or in singing style. I think musically Sunny Day Real Estate (1st record Diary) had more to do with the current "sound" of Emo. If I was to describe the guitar sound of Emo it would be octaves and arppegios. Dinosaur Jr. isn’t just octaves and arppegios, and J’s style of singing isn’t anything like a current Emo band. Though lyrically, you may be able to make a case. I suppose if you were to label Dinosaur Jr Emo, it would have to be Old Skool Emo….. or something.

June 3, 2006 at 7:16 pm #109687no they aren’t emo…they are just alt rock. they don’t have these fully gelled and waxed haircuts and don’t sing in a constant high pitch singing tone with stupid long song titles like panic at the disco and fall out boy.
June 24, 2006 at 10:23 pm #109688Dinosaur Jr were a mixture of classic 70’s rock and punk rock inspired musicians. It’s like Black Flag meets Black Sabbath meets the Rolling Stones. J even says himself in Our Band Could Be Your Life, that one of his biggest influences was The Stones. I really don’t see any real connection between emo and Dinosaur Jr’ musical styilings. Emo bands are much more sophomoric in their lyrical phrases and all sound the same. Dinosaur Jr had a much deeper sense of lyrical inspiration and were pretty unique-sounding. I mean come on! No one in the 80’s used wah pedals! Dinosaur Jr brought back the guitar solo as well. How many emo bands really play the kind of solo’s you hear on Dinosaur Jr’s records? None! Besides, after Lou was kicked out of the band J led Dinosaur Jr into a more mellow, stoner-rock vibe.
In summation, there is NO FUCKING WAY that Dinosaur Jr were emo at any time. So they wrote emotional music. Who doesn’t? Music IS emotion.

Can we had The Brigrade from the Youth Brigade…
September 6, 2006 at 2:33 pm #109693Husker Du were still really good. They may have had that emo-ish sound, but they did it right. Not like all these younger dudes today being all whiney and overly-emotional just for the sake of being overly-emotional. It’s become a fad rather than being what a person really thinks and feels. It’s become so theatrical that it has lost any emotional/artistic validity it may have once had with the bands of old.

Everybody is just riding the emo wave right now. Indie rock is getting marketed a lot more now as well. It’s starting to get really watered down. Indie rock is getting more popular to the general masses so the large music companies are signing on bands that are more accesible than the more experimental indie rockers. It’s going to get bad. I can predict that in the next five years, indie rock will suffer the same fate as grunge did in the mid 90’s.

September 24, 2006 at 10:17 am #109698well if you just mean independant bands, i slightly agree. but there’s a bunch of great bands putting out great records. built to spill, dead meadow, broken social scene, do make say think, yo la tengo
October 5, 2006 at 8:51 pm #109699If Dinosaur Jr influenced "Emo" rock it was purely incidental. Emo bands have a musical encyclopedia of, at the most, five years. Dinosaur Jr didn’t create "Emo." It’s just that some "emo" bands sound kind of maybe like Dinosaur Jr, if Dinosaur Jr was ten times shittier than they are and didn’t know how to write good songs.
