how come no ones mentioned michael jackson? Laugh if you want but I know everyone here was grooving to him at some point in there lives. Thriller, now that was a scary video. I can remember some of my first serious attempts to listen to music…stuff like Stevie Wonder and the Violent Femmes (the last time I saw them they started the show with the lights out and ten minutes of a digerie doo rattling through the auditorium). Definately had some exposure to Madonna (three girl cousins will do that to you). The Cure, the Police, Young MC, Beastie Boys…remember the first time I saw Sonic Youth (absolutley blew me away). A lot of that 80’s crap (glam rock, etc.) but a lot of it is also excellent, ya just got to listen in the right places [img]images/smiles/converted/biggrin.gif[/img]

Some thoughts on my earliest memories of music:
The first music any of us hear is our parents records;my Dad usually bought the records,my Mom would mention stuff that she liked but I don`t think she was a record collector.
Most of the stuff I remember was Gordon Lightfoot,Eagles,Beach Boys,Linda Ronstadt,Neil Young,John Denver,Neil Diamond,etc.
You know that 70`s compilation you see on TV?70`s radios was like that-`Afternoon delight` playing every 30 min.,Harry Chapin,Seals and Crofts,Lobo,etc.
I also remember playing a Dave Clark 5 record
that I don`t know what happen to it,it was beatles type stuff;I also got into alot of disco at age4 and 5:Village People,Bee Gees-Sat. night fever soundtrack.I never had a copy of "Frampton comes alive"for some reason and had knew nothing about punk rock,guess I was too young and that stuff would have scared a little kid anyway.I also remember having an abba record,that kind of pop appeals
to a kid.
Anyone out there like to mention what they listened to as a kid?

That bit about the bee gee’s scared the crap out of me….they are the antichrists to me [img]images/smiles/converted/rolleyes.gif[/img]

I got pretty lucky as a kid, my parents were listening to Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra and other sorta cool but odd stuff. Also had a uncle who was a very bad teenager, got shipped out to live with us….cool influence on me…don’t think my parents would have agreed back then though. He played tons of Stones, Bowie, Animals….even CCR [img]images/smiles/converted/biggrin.gif[/img]

So that was my main musical influence thru the early years. When I started to go see live shows…underage minor at the time…some local groups started doing Pistols covers. That was it I was hooked, started checking out local Punk scene…very small at the time. Haven’t looked back since, have made some of the best friendships thru music. Friendships that don’t rely on geographical location but just that initial connection around music…intensely cool [img]images/smiles/converted/eek.gif[/img]

Also wanted to say you should check out the thread in open topic….guilty pleasures. Sure you have a few…like we all do [img]images/smiles/converted/tongue.gif[/img]

I did a guilty pleasures bit,maybe 2 weeks ago,so check that out.The bee gees is just something I listened to as a kid,I don`t listen to them now;If you want to check out a cool bee gees cover,a band called Mule covered’to love somebody` on a b side to a single and man,it just kicks ass!Mule kind of sounds like a post-punk Lynryd Skynrd,really drunken redneck vocals,very cool!see if you can find that single someday,I don`t have it but heard it on the radio.
My discovery of punk came pretty late,when I first came to the city where I live now,I was in grade 8 and the other kinds in grade 9,some of them were into punk.There was this one guy
who walked in front of me when I went home from school who had a 7 seconds jacket,I had no clue who 7 seconds was,all I knew was pop music.
I remember a friend told me a guy played hima Husker Du tape,my friend said it was the worst music he ever heard!
A guy at the college station said he got into punk when someone threw a Black Flag tape at him!No one threw a Black Flag tape at me!
If I got into punk when I was 12 or 13 I think it would have changed my life totally,changed how I viewed things and the assholes at school that picked on me and the teachers that did`nt like me.I was in my late teens when I first heard punk on the radio and decided that it was something to get into.
