FC-I mentioned Janet from SK earlier;I thought up a couple more:
Jody Bleyle(Hazel)
Palmolive(Slits/Raincoats)August 6, 2002 at 6:55 pm #71167How about "Drumbo", drummer with captain Beefheart.
I liked that guy with the lemonheads (specialy on the song mrs robbinson) and Tony Thompson, this session drummer did great things on Bowie/madonna etc.
As a band/beatlesfreak I must put levon Helm and Ringo in the spotlights
I also loved the things Sly Dunbar did.
Also have to mention Richy Hayward, Dale Crover and good old Jim Keltner.August 6, 2002 at 7:04 pm #71168Charlie Watts from the Stones…think I remember J saying he would like to be Charlie Watts.
Allison
August 6, 2002 at 7:33 pm #71169Nice to mention Allison, it almost makes me starti charlie watts topic. I remember a song by John Hiatt (Slow turning)
"Now I’m in my car
I got the radio on
I’m Yellin’ at the kids in the back seat
Cause they’re bangin’ like charlie Watts"August 9, 2002 at 12:30 pm #71170ok and in the cutest drummer category i nominate dennis wilson my first true love and mickey dolenz my second true love. this ain’t maudlin it is highsterical.
August 9, 2002 at 3:27 pm #71171George Hurley – Minutemen, fIREHOSE
Peter Prescott – Mission of Burma, Volcano Suns
Gene Krupa
and the guy from the first Moving Targets albumAugust 9, 2002 at 6:22 pm #71172max roach and art blakey………..some good shit.
August 10, 2002 at 12:54 pm #71173Chiris Cutler (Per Ubu, David Thomas and the Pedestrian, Wooden Birds, Verious dumb european avant garde experiments, ect.)
Guiguo Chenevere (Etron Fou Lelublan, solo, Fred Frith, ?)They are both Communists… Good drummers though!
Guiguo is The most unusual drummer ever, bar none. If you have heard Captain Beef Heart and thought the drumming was crazy he takes that kind of nutso New Orleans tom tumping madness to an extreem. Or he can make any song his own with a kind of jerky french beat. His drumming reminds me of Jean Cocteu movies.
Chris Cutler is more subtle but equally innovative. Especially with cymbal textures.
I just thought I should add those two in there as the usual suspects had already been included (except Ringo Star who still believes he is the greatest!)
August 10, 2002 at 3:15 pm #71174Hey RuBrick
Cutler is on a Rene Lussier/Fred Frith album I have,I agree on the cymbals textures.Alot of avant garde percussionists are nuts, but HEY!that what makes them so cool.Wireland-ever hear that Buddy Rich/Max Roach album?it has a cool version of Limehouse Blues on it,good stuff;rumor has it Rich detuned Roach`s drums so he`d sound bad!
August 10, 2002 at 5:01 pm #71175Buddy Rich… Definitely a big meanie though, check this transcript of his ranting… My Buddy Too bad the audio link doesn’t work anymore, it was hilarious
Allison
August 12, 2002 at 3:08 pm #71176Buddy Rich was once on the Muppet Show, not sure if he detuned Animal`s drums but I`m sure Animal would have something to say about it
August 12, 2002 at 3:30 pm #71177Jaki Liebezeit (Can)
Thomas Dinger/Hans Lampe (the two drummers on Neu ’75)Brian Eno: ‘There were three great beats in the 70s: Fela Kuti’s afrobeat, James Brown’s funk and Klaus Dinger’s Neu!-beat.’
August 12, 2002 at 3:41 pm #71178damn, db, your musical knowledge astounds me mentioning Can and Fela in one post……..a friend of mine did a few years in the peace corps in Senegal, when he came home turned me on to Fela (and Femi) Kuti………that’s some good shit.
p.s i have access to a couple fela videos if yer interested, they’re pretty cool.[ 08-12-2002, 01:46 PM: Message edited by: wireland ]
