How about "Drumbo", drummer with captain Beefheart.
I liked that guy with the lemonheads (specialy on the song mrs robbinson) and Tony Thompson, this session drummer did great things on Bowie/madonna etc.
As a band/beatlesfreak I must put levon Helm and Ringo in the spotlights
I also loved the things Sly Dunbar did.
Also have to mention Richy Hayward, Dale Crover and good old Jim Keltner.

Nice to mention Allison, it almost makes me starti charlie watts topic. I remember a song by John Hiatt (Slow turning)

"Now I’m in my car
I got the radio on
I’m Yellin’ at the kids in the back seat
Cause they’re bangin’ like charlie Watts"

Chiris Cutler (Per Ubu, David Thomas and the Pedestrian, Wooden Birds, Verious dumb european avant garde experiments, ect.)
Guiguo Chenevere (Etron Fou Lelublan, solo, Fred Frith, ?)

They are both Communists… Good drummers though!

Guiguo is The most unusual drummer ever, bar none. If you have heard Captain Beef Heart and thought the drumming was crazy he takes that kind of nutso New Orleans tom tumping madness to an extreem. Or he can make any song his own with a kind of jerky french beat. His drumming reminds me of Jean Cocteu movies.

Chris Cutler is more subtle but equally innovative. Especially with cymbal textures.

I just thought I should add those two in there as the usual suspects had already been included (except Ringo Star who still believes he is the greatest!)

Hey RuBrick
Cutler is on a Rene Lussier/Fred Frith album I have,I agree on the cymbals textures.Alot of avant garde percussionists are nuts, but HEY!that what makes them so cool.

Wireland-ever hear that Buddy Rich/Max Roach album?it has a cool version of Limehouse Blues on it,good stuff;rumor has it Rich detuned Roach`s drums so he`d sound bad!

Buddy Rich was once on the Muppet Show, not sure if he detuned Animal`s drums but I`m sure Animal would have something to say about it
