straight from the soundboard bootlegs/recordings like this always sound so crappy to me. There’s none of the fuzz, none of the rumble, none of the ambience of a real show. It’s all totally sterile. I spent like 2 hrs downloading this French Sonic Youth bootleg last year and it was the same way. I couldn’t even listen to it.

Hmm. Maybe I should avoid the whole sounboard recording route and stick with ambient/audience recordings? I personally prefer hearing the crowd. Concert recordings (in my opinion) should recreate the concert experience.

Do people think my recordings are actually superior to sounboard recordings? Please let me know. All my recordings are audience recordings.

Username @ fsf: wakeupnow please look for my recordings and let me know. Thanks.

Have you ever tried binaural recording? Or maybe tap into the soundboard and mic the audience at the same time ? (If you have the resources to do so) and pull some kind of stereo effect from mono?

I read on this site about binaural recordings. I didn’t understand it.

It’s like you’re recording through a headset instead of through a mic. The recording is done through a pair of headphones.

Its basically recording with 2 matched mics to recreate the way our ears here. There is a really expensive mic that is shaped like a foam head with mic as ears to record the way we might here it. Pearl Jam recorded the album binaural this way.

Found a nice website explaining it simply. http://home.access4less.net/~krisbee/Field%20Recording.html

Maybe we can make one out of a beer hat, instead. D’you think it would work? :D

:) Gives a whole another meaning to singing in the can.
