….for nerds like me. i have alot of catching up to do.
research suggests our species (H.sapiens sapiens diverged much later than once believed. also, there may have been interbreeding between us and our closest relatives chimps (Pan troglodytes)
any other science nerds out there?
May 18, 2006 at 2:03 pm #117555I read about this yesterday.
It’s weird to think about interbreeding, who gonna say, "Fuck that chimp is hot!" and hook up with it?
Maybe a more likely reason for the interbreeding was that aliens were experimenting.
Food for thought at least.
May 18, 2006 at 2:06 pm #117556it’s weird. i’ve been trying to think of another scenario in which critters from 2 different genera mate and produce viable offspring, and i can’t….
May 18, 2006 at 2:09 pm #117557Yep, totally weird. In the article I read it said that that type of thing typically never works.
Still, it would be way cool to see a Centaur.
May 18, 2006 at 2:37 pm #117558They recently found a grizzly/polar bear mix, very odd looking. Huge shame though, a guy shot & killed it…

I’m a big science geek as well…
May 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #117559i read about that hybrid, but aren’t they (polar and grizzly) bears part of the same genus? a male donkey can mate with a female horse to make a mule, but the mules are sterile…this new data suggests that us and chimps produced viable (and obviously succesful) species.
May 18, 2006 at 3:59 pm #117560very rare hybrid to say the least, some are theorizing that it may be a route polar bears could take to continue the species, as they are at risk with the many enviornmental changes in their habitat.
Interesting chimp/human info, Discover mag recently had an article on human/animal hybrids used in medical research…discover.com/chimera
May 18, 2006 at 5:58 pm #117561interesting read, AGAP. GMOs (gentecically modified organisms) still give me the willies. i understand the possible benefits i.e gene therapy and whatnot. but looking at it from an organic farmers perspective (which i am), there are just too many variables to try to control. and big evil agribusiness corps. like MONSANTO are seriously threatening the livelihood of thousands of small family farmers just to make a few bucks. i guess the bottom line for me is genetic engineering has great potential, but keep it in the lab (for now)

..and if you look closely the study was conducted by James Brown. who knows more about sex than soul Brother Number One?
