The problem with a four team playoff is that at least 2 of the BCS conferences will be unrepresented. That will not fly.
The problem with an 8 team playoff is that the mid-major conferences (C-USA, MAC, WAC, and Mountain West) will bitch piss and moan.. Allowing them into the playoff picture may cause for some upsets.
The reason why there is not a playoff is Division 1-A football is money and power. It has nothing to do with them being "student – athletes". Who controls the money controls the power. Right now, the BCS conferences split the money amongst their 6 conferences (Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC and Big East). They are unwilling to give any of that to the NCAA.
What CBS needs to do is propose a 12 or 16 team playoff, (its only 4 games) and offer $1.5 billion to the NCAA for 5 years.. ESPN/ABC will not do it, they love what they have. Assume a 16 team playoff.. Take 10 or 12 conference champions, and add 4 – 6 at-large entries. That way, teams who may have struggled in the first 2 weeks have a chance, especially if they are playing real well. Use a BCS type system to determine the at large teams. Play them in December.
Round 1 – The 8 best conference champs are the home team.
Round 2 – Use bowl sites like the Holiday, etc. who are going to be most affected by the new playoff system. (1 will be one of the 4 big ones). Try to keep teams regionalized, as much as possible.
Round 3 – Use the 2 remaining non-championship Bowl loactions
Championship – Rotate each year among the Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta. As for the other bowls, they can stay. No one, except the schools involved, cares about them anyway. Do I really get excited about a December 18th bowl in Detroit against Marshall and Louisville? Nope. But the people who go/went to those schools will get excited. So they do not lose anything.
I put way too much effort into this.
. and I could be wrong…Carl.

November 26, 2002 at 12:12 pm #81875Wait. The Marshall bowl is Dec. 18th in Detroit? I will seriously be at that if so.
I agree about it being about money. The problem is, like you said 4 teams, 2 conferences being unrepresented. 8 teams, involves using up so many bowl slots that bowls become nonexistant except for the playoffs.
Some have suggested a game AFTER the bowls for the top 2 ranked teams. This wouldn’t solve all problems but it’d be another checkoff.

November 26, 2002 at 12:15 pm #81876No, Marshall is in the GMAC bowl in Alabama. The Motor City Bowl is Dec. 26th, and I’ll be back here then, unfortunately.

Gator, Cotton, Outback, Holiday, Peach, Liberty, Sun and Alamo bowls could be those slots. Maybe they can play some first round games there?? Who knows. And aren’t the other bowls non-existant anyway, except for the teams andfans involved?

November 26, 2002 at 12:59 pm #81880That creeped me out in a huge way as well
Feel for the kid, he was having a wicked game. Unbelievable how some teams have wicked back up qb’s, but not the mighty BEARS
Not a SF fan so even I enjoyed that game last nite, other than the replays of the dislocated elbow
Allison

November 26, 2002 at 1:06 pm #81881No, I’ll be in Detroit from the 14th-22nd. If I was there on the 26th I’d definitely go to the Motor City Bowl.

November 28, 2002 at 11:30 am #81882I wish the NFL would remove Dallas and Detroit from Thanksgving Day games..
Of course, they never will, since they have always played on American Turkey Day. And, with the salary cap and all the player movements in the offseason, those two teams might actually be decent next year (if they remove their idiot coaches)I could be wrong.
Carl.
