Dinosaur Jr.
While reissues of the first three Dinosaur Jr. albums (Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me, Bug) due in March may not offer much in the way of bonus material, fans of the band’s auteur, J. Mascis, can find a wealth of otherwise unreleased material at FreeSoFree.net. The site is completely devoted to archiving rare recordings of Mascis’ solo work and Dinosaur Jr.The archive boasts nearly 100 audio recordings in MP3 and higher-quality FLAC formats documenting performances from as far back as 1986 through, as of this writing, November 2004. Highlights include a July ’86 show from Milwaukee featuring the classic DJ line-up with Lou Barlow (bass) and Murph (drums). The set includes Barlow’s two turns as a Dino singer/songwriter, "Mountain Man" and "Lose." Recent recordings of Mascis’ current band, the Fog, feature sets comprised mostly of classic Dinosaur Jr. material(hmm, think theres a lot of Fog material as well…cg) and are of exceptional sound quality, in particular one from Philadelphia from last year.
A video archive on the site lists about 40 music videos and full-length performances in MPEG, Real and AVI formats, including a 2002 sit-down acoustic set shot with superior quality at Stubb’s in Austin. The earliest video available is raw but historically significant, a New Year’s performance at the University of Massachusetts in 1986.
