I’d be surprised if your teacher even knew how to do this

There’s surprisingly little photoshop involved.Hey, it’s Mei, thanks for all your nice words. The band’s management pointed me to this thread.
I’ve uploaded a couple more pics you may be interested in, showing J’s stack and the whole band together.http://www.flickr.com/photos/meimeimei/378233031/”>http://www.flickr.com/photos/meimeimei/378233031/

the shots are great…but photoshop?………now I see the light.well yeah … Effects similar this can be done w/ rear-curtain sync flash but in this case, having parts of the photo be in focus while the like swirls around it would seem to be pretty much impossible unless there is some type of camera lens of which I’m unaware that lets you "rotate" the outer edge of the photo while keeping the inside still. The light effects also be due to camera shake or long exposures but then you get something like this

where there are some cool streaks but they whole photo is out of focus as well (this was unintentional on my part).
There are probably Photoshop plugins that let you do that kind of "vortex" effect. Still pretty cool, though.
February 4, 2007 at 2:34 pm #125264Well, these shots sure brought up a lot of discussion in our house, my husband and I were looking at them several days ago and thinking what bank of lights was rotating? WTF? We both have some photo experience. I was thinking "these look digital, so what possibly could have happened when that shot was snapped "digitally" to cause that rotation with focus………..Gosh, I’m so old school………half dumb. Neither of us ever went to photo shop in our minds……..we were trying to so hard to put together how that shot happened.
Tom, Do you have a photo background or are you just smart when it comes to these kind of things?
ps they are still great shots I like the effect.February 4, 2007 at 2:45 pm #125265nice picture, new jazz with black headstock in the background?

WTF?oh yeah … I hadn’t thought of that. perhaps there were some rotating lights. Now maybe Mei Mei can tell us without revealing all his trade secrets
it does look like something that could be done w/ the "Liquify" filter in PS.And yes, Annastefka … I do have some photo background, not professionally but more in the avid-amateur-who-spends-way-too-much-$$-on-photo-equipment sense
I also help teach beginning photo classes at a nonprofit arts center in Chicago.February 4, 2007 at 4:02 pm #125267one pill makes you larger aaaand one pill makes you small
February 4, 2007 at 6:43 pm #125268I really felt Rosa’s post………..
So now I’m hummin’ Jimi’s Third Stone from the Sun
Your people I do not understand……………………February 4, 2007 at 6:59 pm #125269Oh, Tom, My beautiful God daughter Jacosa just came back from Chicago after graduating from the Art Institute there. She came back with a few tattoos, Yikes! I guess thats what kids do these days.
We are glad to have her back in the fold but she misses Chicago.http://myspace-362.vo.llnwd.net/01453/26/34/1453014362_m.jpg”>http://myspace-362.vo.llnwd.net/01453/2 … 4362_m.jpg
She also taught classes in Chicago, Chicago is a big place but she is a memorable girl.
Her father is Japanese her mother American. My husband loves Chicago, he did the Art Chicago show many
years in a row and would come home with stories of how wonderful Chicago is………I’ve never been.
February 5, 2007 at 8:54 am #125270I think this is an old school camera with open timer ? Unless there was even more old school stuff involved like, actually developing the photos yourself in the darkroom and shaking or manipulating the image under the enlarger
Anyway, it’s a thought…February 5, 2007 at 9:29 am #125271Yeah, but these are color shots………….few people print color shots by hand anymore……students at RIT…….
and a few crazy dye tranfer addicts. These shots came up fast so I assumed they were digital and have probably never yet been printed onto anything……….my guess.February 13, 2007 at 8:25 am #125272Okay, trade secrets… and as far as I know I _invented_ this!
Two shots, one static, the other rotating the camera on a much longer shutter time.
The photos were taken on a DSLR, there’s absoultely no reason the original pics couldn’t have been taken wiht film.Masked together, with such a simple mask that it could probably be done in the darkroom, but I happened to use photoshop.
The main skill here is taking the correct photos to begin with!
