      From Pitchfork (pitchforkmedia.com):

The point– and there is, in fact, a point– is that Epic Records has announced plans to release a 2xCD+DVD Legacy Edition of London Calling on September 21st, to honor the 25th anniversary of this musical benchmark. In addition to the original album (whether or not the press release’s phrasing of "original album" ought to be interpreted as "original master" is as of yet uncertain), the reissue will contain a second disc entitled The Vanilla Tapes, featuring previously unheard demos for London Calling that were recently salvaged from Mick Jones’ storage building. While the tracklist for the bonus disc has not yet been divulged, the demos are said to include a number of tracks that have never seen release in any form.

These two discs, presented in digipack format, are accompanied by a DVD acting as a "time capsule representing The Clash at the time of London Calling’s release." Again, tracklist unconfirmed, but one verified feature is a 45-minute documentary courtesy of Clash biographer Don Letts. The documentary is reported to feature plenty of recently recovered footage, including interviews with the band, in-studio documentation of the recording process, several live performances, and the as-of-yet unheard perspective of band manager Kosmo Vinyl. The package is also slated to include rare shots by band photographer Pennie Smith, a complete lyric sheet, and a retrospective essay.

Sympathy for the Record Industry is re-releasing Gun Club classics 8)

                    THE GUN CLUB
For all of the usual idiotic reasons including having the audacity of being vastly ahead of their time, one of the most legendary and increasingly influential Los Angeles bands of the last 2 1/2 decades has characteristically never received the respect and success they so richly deserve. Although always revered in the U.K. and in Europe, The Gun Club virtually escaped any notoriety in the U.S., where adulation is based on record sales rather than artistry and talent. However an abundance of Gun Club bootlegs are currently making the rounds and their original records demand exorbitant collectors’ prices. Has the time really come to recognize the immense contribution of The Gun Club?

The Gun Club were irreverent upstarts and genuine innovators. They were among the first to incorporate the punk ethic and flaunt that attitude. They injected it into a resurrection of the dark spirit of Blues and Roots music and thereby created a unique new hybrid genre.

For leader/guiding light Jeffrey Lee Pierce, The Gun Club was an intense and cathartic medium to broadcast and exorcise his personal demons with a repertoire concerned mainly with themes of sex, vengeance and a preoccupation with death. On stage he was known for his substance abuse and unpredictable behavior. Unfortunately his talent and vision was silenced forever in 1996 when he died of a brain hemorrhage.

Working directly with the family of Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Animal Records owner Chris Stein, Sympathy For The Record Industry is excited and honored to be re-releasing 3 long out of print
                    GUN CLUB records.

                    THE GUN CLUB "MIAMI"
                    cd/lp – OUT IN OCTOBER
Following their ground-breaking debut, "Fire of Love", MIAMI was released in 1982 and has been out of print for more than 10 years. Produced by Blondie’s Chris Stein, it has a cleaner sound than its predecessor, yet manages to retain a similar urgency and overall intensity as well as Pierce’s ominous trademark howl. Debbie Harry sings back-up on various tracks under the pseudonym D.H.Lawrence.

                    TRACKS
Carry Home, Calling Up Thunder, Brother and Sister, Run Through the Jungle, Devil in the Woods, Texas Serenade, Watermelon Man, Bad Indian, John Hardy, Fire of Love, Sleeping in Blood City, Mother of Earth

                    THE GUN CLUB "DEATH PARTY"
                    cd/LP – OUT IN OCTOBER
After a lineup shake-up, DEATH PARTY (1983) is the only recording by this version of The Gun Club.

In addition to Jeffrey on guitar and vocals there is Dee Pop (Bush Tetras) on drums, Jim Duckworth (Panther Burns) and Jimmy Uiana on bass. This is a strange and unholy record. "Death Party" (the track) was co-written by San Francisco band Flipper and Pierce, and according to Duckworth "it was based on a moronic rock riff that made us all laugh." The standout track among the apocalyptic preaching is the haunting and beautiful "The House on Highland Avenue. "

Also included for the first time anywhere is 7 tracks from a live radio broadcast from Geneva, Switzerland in March 1983. The band on this recording is Patricia Morrison, Jim Duckworth, Dee Pop and Jeffrey Lee Pierce. Sufice to say there are a lot of surprises, revelations and astonishing moments from this session.

                    TRACKS:
The House on Highland Avenue, The Lie, Light of the World, Death Party, Come Back Jim
Radio Geneva Show: Strange Fruit, Fire of Love, House on Highland Ave, Death Party, Heebie Jeebies, The Lie, Run Through the Jungle

THE GUN CLUB "LAS VEGAS STORY"
                    cd/lp – OUT IN OCTOBER
Although Jeffrey would reform and reignite The Gun Club up until his death, this release from 1984 marked the end of the original era. Kid Congo Powers was back on guitar after serving time with The Cramps and Rob Ritter who left to join 45 Grave was replaced by Patricia Morrison on bass. Including peculiar choices for covers by Pharoah Sanders and Gershwin, LAS VEGAS STORY begins with a Bo Diddley drum beat and continues through a pastiche of styles and storylines that encapsulate the warped ideals of middle America.

                    TRACKS
The Las Vegas Story, Walkin’ With the Beast, Eternally Is Here, Stranger In Our Town, My Dreams, Master Plan, My Man’s Gone Now, Bad America, Moonlight Motel, Give Up The Sun
                    bonus track on CD"Secret Fires"

cool!!! I never had Death Party on record, only on tape and later as mp3, so this one I’ll buy for sure!

when ever I listen to the Gun Club, I’m surprised how fresh the music still sounds, or, maybe "timeless" is the word. the records are for sure classics, and it’s worth to check them out!
I wonder why they don’t also reissue Fire Of Love, the great first record? maybe it’s not out of print, yet? I still use to see it in the shops there and where. :?

POR VIDA: A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo
                        Release date: July 27, 2004

Alejandro Escovedo is one of the most critically acclaimed artists in contemporary music, hailed by Rolling Stone critic David Fricke for creating "his own genre" and named Artist of the Decade for the 1990s by No Depression magazine. Widely admired for the stylistic breadth and innovation of his compositions and his facility for translating his personal experiences and observations into universal truths, he fell ill from the effects of Hepatitis C in April 2003.

The music community responded to his health crisis and its financial repercussions with a stunning outpouring of generosity and concern that culminates in Por Vida: A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo. On the two disc set, 30+ acts from across the musical spectrum – including Escovedo’s friends, family, peers, influences and admirers – offer their inspired interpretations of his material, packaged with liner notes by famed critic Dave Marsh. A portion of the proceeds from this release will benefit the Alejandro Escovedo Medical & Living Expense Fund as well as to spearhead an ongoing assistance effort for musicians afflicted with Hepatitis C.

The album will also a feature a previously unreleased performance by Alejandro Escovedo.

                            Go-Betweens Prepare Three Expanded Reissues

                            Rod Waterman reports:
The Go-Betweens will complete the reissuing of their back catalog with the September 6th release of the last three albums from their first incarnation, Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (1986), Tallulah (1987), and 16 Lovers Lane (1988). These reissues, like the first three released in 2002, will be released on the Lo-Max label, and will each contain an entire disc of bonus material, including B-sides, live songs, radio sessions, demos and video clips.

The band recently played a sold-out and very conceptual show at London’s Barbican Centre involving a two-hour audio/visual experience entitled Before Hollywood: A Film Retrospective. Circus Records described this part of the program as a "marathon visual cornucopia." We don’t know about you, dear reader, but when times are tough and the chips are down, there’s really nothing we like more than a nice cup of tea and a marathon visual cornucopia. It’s something of a fetish, to be honest. The Go-Betweens’ Grant McLennan also recently performed "The Man Who Sold the World" at the Brisbane Cabaret Festival in a production of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which we’re betting was probably nothing like Kurt Cobain’s version of the same song from MTV Unplugged all those years ago.

In other Go-Betweens news, the band’s gorgeous early salvo "Cattle and Cane" will make an appearance on the forthcoming Rhino "80s Underground" compilation Left of the Dial due October 5th, which will feature kindred spirits such as Dream Syndicate, the Dead Kennedys and Kate Bush. You know, all those people who lived underground in the 1980s. In the meantime, the Go-Betweens themselves continue to bask, very legitimately, in the reflected glory of 2003’s Bright Yellow Bright Orange. Some tracklists for you:

great to see that these great Go-Betweens albums will be available again, with cool bonus material :)🙂
since many years, the Go-B’s belong to my most favourite bands.
they’re comparativley big in Europe, actually, they play bigger venues than most of the other acts I like. And that’s for good reasons, they’re just as nice as they’re weird  although their weirdness tends to be overlooked at first sight, because their folk/country inspired pop music sounds listenable on the surface.

…also on Pitchfork, there’s the latest "New Built To Spill record" rumour:

Built to Spill Tour, Plan Sixth Album

Built to Spill Tour, Plan Sixth Album
Group tips over like metaphorical sippy cup, leaves no perceivable mess
                              Miles Barger reports:
Built to Spill: the band, the myth, the legend. Formed in 1993 in Boise, ID, the band, under the leadership of hirsute frontman Doug Martsch, was responsible for creating some of the 1990s best indie records, namely 1994’s There’s Nothing Wrong With Love and 1997’s Perfect from Now On. Their latest outing, Ancient Melodies of the Future, was released long, long ago in the great year of 2001, and your average Built to Spill fan’s desire for a new record has naturally been building to almost unbearable levels ever since.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, while the specifics are still hazier than a bong party at Method and Red’s fictitious suburban sitcom hizzouse, we at the ‘Fork have received the smallest of news bones to throw your way: Built to Spill have a new record that should be seeing the light of day this fall. Do we have a title? No. Do we have a tracklist? No. What we do have are some tour dates, which may prove your first chance to hear some of the material off of the new LP. Consider it a small consolation.

Many of these shows are set to be intimate affairs, though the final two performances will be held at some fun Pacific Northwest festivals. Two dates are of particular interest: The August 14th show at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre, according to the venue’s website, will feature Martsch and former Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis performing a live score to surprise film footage, while the Bumbershoot Festival date will see the band headlining alongside the comeback triumph of the Pixies– as well as Nickelback and Seal! Like a kiss from a rose:
