OK, so here’s the situation… While helping my sister’s boyfriend (Casey) move into his new pad the other day, we started a brief discussion on our musical interests…
I mentioned that I like the indie stuff, at which Casey’s housemate, Mike, says "What’s indie?" Finding his question unexceptable, I’ve decided to create for them a mix cd of indie stuff, just to see if they’ll like it…
That’s where you people come in… I’ve got 74mins of space on a cd, and I need help on deciding what to put on it…
The players:
Casey’s heard my music before and has shown interest in exploring new tunes. His main interest is big-band stuff because he’s one hell of a swing dancer… (One hell of.. as in he was the featured male dancer in a bowl-game halftime show for Florida State University a couple years ago! )
Mike, I’m not sure about, but he seems like a possible mainstream-brainwashed type. Fortunately, he’s a real nice guy and probably will give it a listen.
Mike’s girlfriend Amy… Total unknown. Seems pretty cool though…
Some things that I definately want on it are:
Built To Spill: ‘Carry the Zero’ and maybe ‘Car’
JMATF: ‘Everything Flows Medley’ and ‘Ammaring’
And a song or two from…
Dinosaur Jr
Modest Mouse
Guided By Voices
Bob Mould related bands
SebadohYou get the idea.. Don’t limit yourselves to the bands I’ve listed… Those are just examples..
So, gimme your ideas..!
August 3, 2001 at 6:27 pm #83311I would seriously toss Feel The Pain by Dino on there. Most people have ehard it and it can be like a gateway into indie.
Throw some MOA on their too "Of Sex And Demise" or "Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Love Theme."
August 3, 2001 at 6:30 pm #83312I`d pick:
Dinosaur Jr-The Wagon
Modest Mouse-Dramamine
GBV-Chasing Heather Crazy
Husker Du-Eiffel Tower High
Sebadoh-Rebound
Sugar-A Good IdeaHow`s that,do you want more?
Hope you have these Matt.
August 3, 2001 at 6:38 pm #83313Modest Mouse – Edit The Sad Parts, That Song Did It for Me
Sebadoh – Not2AmusedMaybe A Grandaddy Song
August 5, 2001 at 3:56 pm #83314Hey,
Good luck with the conversion attempt. Good Idea by Sugar is a great song, although with the lyrics might be a wise choice not to include it for your sisters boyfriend…yikes.
My suggestions…Sugar…Gee Angel or Tilted
Bob Mould…off of LDAPS…Moving Trucks or Sweet Serene
Flaming Lips…She don’t use Jelly or Race for The Prize
Urge Overkill…Sister Havana
Archers of Loaf…Telepathic Traffic or Scenic Pastures
Husker Du…Green Eyes or Could You Be The One…Don’t Want To Know If Your Lonely
Jesus and Mary Chain…Rollercoaster
Ramones…Howling At The MoonThats all for now,

Good choices Allison. JAMC is really good, I’ve gotten into them recently. Also, the Ramones will show th epunkier side of indie and you can fit like 12 of their songs on thee CD and only take up 7 minutes.
August 5, 2001 at 8:34 pm #83316Hey Allison,I did`nt know you liked the Archers Of Loaf,Telepathic Traffic is a great tune,I have The Speed Of Cattle compilation on double vinyl, vinyl is rare where I live.
Here`s some more good tunes:
Pavement-Cut Your Hair
Yo La Tengo-Sugarcube
Bettie Serveert-Tom Boy
Versus-Yeah You
My Bloody Valentine-Only Shallow(I once saw a fashion show on tv that were playing this in the background, weird.)
Guided By Voices-Official Iron Man Rally SongAugust 5, 2001 at 9:40 pm #83317Hey Salamiguy,
You can’t be to surprised I like AOL, that song is great…along with many others. Also like Crooked Fingers…thanks Javro…Under Sad Stars is a very cool song.
ELJ all JAMC is amazing, William Reid has a solo deal called Lazycame some very interesting songs…just love his sound guitar/voice!!! Not sure what Jim Reid is doing, last I heard he was producing his sister. Oh Oh found another thing we agree on… but like you said football season is approaching fast BEARS 1-0 pre season!!!

Good for them. I have no problem with the Bears achieving success… I hope (for your sake) they make ti all the way to the NFC championship game. AS long as my Lions crush them there, I have no problem with that scenario at all.

Mattman, I know the list is really big but I figure I’d give you alot to consider since your going trying to introduce someone to new stuff.
I’m just wondering what are peoples definition of "Indie." Is it just bands that have the "indie sound", bands that are on an independent labels or a combination of both?
August 6, 2001 at 2:04 am #83320Great idea for ‘Edit the Sad Parts’ Spaceboy. That one’s definately goin in…
ELJ, I don’t want to include ‘Feel the Pain’ because I think there are much better Dino songs. I’m going for goodness over familiarity. Definatley will add some MOA though. Honestly, I completely forgot to consider them. Thanks for reminding me.
Good suggestions Salamiguy. ‘Rebound’ might go in, but I’m also thinking ‘Too Pure’ maybe both… As far as Sugar goes, I’m leaning towards ‘Fortune Teller’ I love that song…
Hmm… So much great music to filter down into 74 min…
August 7, 2001 at 10:29 am #83321Good choices RD;glad you mentioned Quasi,I always talk about Sleater Kinney and since Janet plays also in Quasi, cool you mentioned that.
Hum,glad you mentioned them,GBV-awesome too,Neutral Milk Hotel-great stuff,Holland 1945 is a great tune.Lots of other cool stuff you mentioned,hope Matt has these.
Indie is hard to define, with the amount of bands that signed to the majors I guess it`s more a sound than being on a indie label, now alot of bands are back to indie labels since the majors gave up on them.August 8, 2001 at 3:45 am #83322Indie Mix v1.0:

August 8, 2001 at 11:42 am #83324Hey Mattmann
It Sounds OK
But I Personally would Change That Arab Strap Song
I Would Choose for Autumnal, Leave The Day Free or Cherubs -
