Hey so I’m trying to go for that dino jr crunchy distortion sound (kinda like on The wagon at :58 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edCOwJQM50c) but am having trouble getting it. I want a boost of volume during certain parts of the song with a pedal but when i use my big muff it comes out muddy and completely saps the energy out of the chord. can anyone give any recommendations on better pedals to use for this kind of sound.

Btw: I use a fender jazzmaster and a fender mustang II amp if that helps any.

Well he uses a big muff but all muffs aren’t equal….. and as is well documented his is very unique.

Not sure if you could combine an overdrive with the muff…. (don’t think he does this at all). I would just continue to play around with the settings on your big muff? or play around with the settings on your mustang…

I use two pedals that might roughly do what you expect
          – the hot cake by crowther audio (the guys from pavement used it a lot)
          – a french clone of the Klon Centaur : http://anasounds.com/produit/savage/

I say “roughly” cause I have to admit I’m usually bad at pointing directions and cause I have a telecaster and an Orange amp which is a pretty fat bias

Check out Tym Guitars from Australia:

Here’s a Tym Fuzz Munchkin endorsed by J Mascis: http://www.tymguitars.com.au/collections/effects/products/tym-fuzz-munchkin

“Tym tried to harness my sound in a little a box and I think he’s got it. Step on the Fuzz Munchkin for a good time. Dial down the volume for cleaned up rhythm then hit the bypass switch and the flood gates are open, the volume control dissapears, all sanity dissapears, its just searing lead tone cranked all the way up. So now if your sound sucks you must lay blame somewhere else, your amp, your pickups, your fingers, but don’t blame the Fuzz Munchkin.” J Mascis.

good luck getting a munchkin though…… they are made in very small numbers, been a while since he has done any.

i would think any muff, perhaps with a boost pedal should work or get close…. or combining 2 fuzz pedals.

Didn’t know the munchkin, good to know !
(yeah, even if it’s likely I’ll never get one)
