I discovered Dinosaur Jr as part of growing up through the UK Indie scene in the late eighties early nineties. I have 4 of the albums (Bug, Green Mind, Where You Been and Witout a Sound). What I am wondering, as I like those so much, is why they rarely get mentioned here. Obviously I haven’t researched enough, and it may be down to difficulties of getting hold of them in the UK, but I hadn’t heard of what are being described as ‘legendary’ first albums.
Where You Been is in my all time top 5 by any artist, how does it stack up to the earlier You’re Living All Over Me?Where You Been is my personal favorite. It’s my favorite album by an artist, ever. You’re Living All Over Me is a classic and, I would say, more influential than any of Dino’s other albums. It sounds more like Bug than any of the others you have but I find it’s a bit more experimental and unique. I think YLAOM is considered by most critics to be one of the quintisential albums of the late 80s/early 90s grunge/punk scene.
I think all of Dino/J`s albums get equal talk on this board
I like all of them though Without A Sound is the my least favorite though I would`nt say it`s as bad as some people think.Some people don`t care for Where You Been on up for being some sort of sell outs but that`s bullshit.The first 3 albums are important to the underground `80s rock scene and certainly inspired many many bands.
My fave is Bug
I love Without a sound but I’m a special case because it was my first.
anyway, you’ll like YLAOM if you like those other 4. get the reissue in march

This brings up the interesting question of how much what you read and other people’s opinion’s influence your taste. I mean if I didn’t read how important and exciting and influential YLAOM is would I still like Without a Sound the most. And if I didn’t know that others thought WaS was weak would it be in my top five of all time list? Interesting points to ponder but really hard to know for sure.
I found WaS in a cut out bin and really didn’t know anything about Indie Rock when I was in 9th grade so It’s kind of a life changing album for me and Dinosaur Jr was the gateway for discovering great bands and defining my musical taste.
i think this is all part of a government sponsered mind control experiment geared towards the grunge orientated crowd… like the bermuda triangle of 1992 and shit… like that part on that one movie…. i forget… ahhh repulsion… crispy… mmmmm…. delicous ….
I don’t think people writing how influential a disc is influences people to any huge degree…YLAOM & Dinosaur are very influential as SG stated & I love them both, but my fav is Bug…always will be
Although, I can’t wait to receive my reissues, my Bug is so muddy…over the years it’s been bathed in milk, used as a coaster…not me
& numerous other careless accidents with it …have to turn it up to insane levels to get anywhere near the volume it deserves…
