Bearcat, It was great having a nice discussion about it. Too often on music boards differing opinions lead to fighting. Have a good weekend.
September 15, 2012 at 5:52 pm #139417I just gotta my bundle in the mail. I didn’t realize the vinyl was going to be a limited edition colored. Purple marble! What a bonus! Also the 7″ with Now the Fall and Ricochet is awesome! Both of those songs should have made the album cut in my opinion.
Has anyone else gotten theirs?
September 15, 2012 at 8:30 pm #139418Had you received a shipping notification beforehand? I haven’t heard anything, nor have I gotten my bundle.
September 15, 2012 at 9:03 pm #139419Same here- no info, no email, no nothing yet.
September 15, 2012 at 11:45 pm #139420Yeah, I got an email on Thursday from sc distribution. I would contact them for sure.
September 17, 2012 at 3:12 pm #139421Loving the new album here. Feels really inspired and fresh. Gotta listen some more though.. much more
September 18, 2012 at 9:07 am #139422To me it sounds brilliant: awesome tone, lush layers, killer tunes. I’m not sure what people mean by it sounding pop, faxed in, cheesy, rehashed, or having broad commercial appeal; not hearing that. Maybe some fans’ expectations are too high? Maybe try lowering your standards (or playing the actual album/cd?); you’ll enjoy more. I’d like I Bet on Sky even better if it was longer and had more extended soloing like in See It On Your Side, or included a 20 minute cover of Mother Sky, but that’s about it for caviling over here. Stick a Toe In, Pierce the Morning Rain, What Was That, all incredibly great songs. I’m with Tonas re. awesomeness of Now the Fall and Ricochet.
I was reading/listening to a Jack Casady interview with No Treble the other day and he said some interesting things about tone, weaving soloing into the song, and the bass being there to support the song, not just to play what the bassist wants to play, and it seems that, for any ambivalence he’s expressed about playing in Dinosaur Jr, Lou’s bass sounds fantastic here (as does Murph’s drumming) and really shines in service of these songs.
My friend heard the album on Rollins’ radio show the other night and described the album as “stunningly good.” The mp3s were alright, but the cd sounds incomparably better on an actual stereo. I can’t play the vinyl (black, not marbled) that came with the bundle because the hole doesn’t fit on my turntable’s spindle. The hole’s too small; maybe it’s a Region 2 LP… My husband said something about screwed sprue; I’ll try filing and/or drilling it.
September 18, 2012 at 1:10 pm #139423See It On Your Side is an instant classic. One of the best songs since the reunion.
September 18, 2012 at 3:50 pm #139424@tonas Where did the purple marble vinyl come from?
I gotta say, i’m in love with this album. It’s abit different from other releases, but i’m not complaining, the songs are so hooky. ”Almost Fare” is my favorite thus far. Just epic.
September 19, 2012 at 11:46 am #139425My thoughts, if anyone’s interested:

September 20, 2012 at 5:24 am #139426Cool review, I swapped the baseball metaphor for cricket in my mind though 🙂
September 20, 2012 at 7:56 am #139427@empire2 Thanks for checking it out!
September 20, 2012 at 10:17 am #139428I’ve enjoyed this thread. As far as the new stuff…..I’ve decided not to say a thing. See, I really am changing (it’s about time, eh?) but I really am enjoying reading what others are thinking. I’ve got an animal that’s making a Winter home for itself inside my kitchen wall right now…..sitting here drinking coffee and listening to it….wtf is it? It’s bigger than a squirrel or a rat, it’s sounds like it’s moving furniture in…I’m hearing footsteps along with a dragging sound. That’s not a dragging sound, I think that’s the sound of chewing through wires , got to set up a trap…TODAY…URGGGG X_X (now I have more 1st world problems to add to my list of other 1st world problems, that in my own Gemini way, I still think, if I ignore, will sort of resolve themselves without any interference on my part. I have about a 50% success rate when it comes to ignoring problems and letting them sort themselves out. Not bad.)
Maybe if I put the new Dinosaur Jr stuff on REAL LOUD up against that wall…..IT (whatever it is) will decided not to finish moving in and will instead move out. It’s worth a try.
September 20, 2012 at 12:01 pm #139429You might try playing some of Dylan’s new record (“Tempest”) against the wall, too. That’ll scare the #%&* out of anything!
September 20, 2012 at 12:56 pm #139430The key component of my plan was the “real loud”….It wasn’t a commentary on content. There are a few of the new songs (Dinosaur JR) that I like….I only say that because I haven’t heard any of the Bob Dylan stuff but I’ve read reviews that allude to it being a “rambling incoherent mess” and Bob being a Gemini…..well that just makes me profoundly sympathetic because this past weekend a good friend told me that lately, I’ve been coming across as a “rambling incoherent mess”, she said “You’re like one of those people who have have suffered a traumatic brain injury or something” In my minds eye, I can take the idea of a 2012 Bob Dylan and play the tape forward and imagine the discomfort.
