Agree all the “can I” lines were getting a bit old already on Beyond. That said, if Stick a toe in had been dropped for a more interesting tune, that complaint would be much less valid for IBOS.
Still digging the album…October 15, 2012 at 11:39 pm #139447Dinosaur Jr. as their most creative point was basically over by the end of 1989 but that was a noisier more punk type era with SST etc that can’t be recreated. I look at their 90’s material as their next phase with their live performance for the 1992 Whatever’s Cool with me being a very good tour where they were really peaking. Same with 1991 Green Mind Tour. I would say 1994 marked a change with a change to more of a subtle ear bleeding country sound but one could say that happened in 1993 with where you Been. Truly, the 2000’s is a separate distinctive era for Dinosaur Jr. with the 3 albums, each good respectively and a new live sound. I think they went in a refreshing new direction with I Bet on Sky, a smart career move showing off their ability to appeal to all ages including some younger music fans. And I must say they have all the great pop sensibilities without losing their edge and creativity. This truly, is a band that should be a first ballot hall of fame group because of how much great material they have written and continue to do in an innovative fashion while remaining a great live band that’s loud and rockin.
October 19, 2012 at 3:13 pm #139448I do have to put a major plug in for What Was That, which is just awesome. I liked it ok early on, but what a great song it’s become over more listens. I’ve also found some appreciation for the great texture change in Almost Fare, from the polished beat of the refrain to the Neil Young-ish sounding guitar solo. That’s a really nice J solo that I probably didn’t hear at first, but the contrast to the song as a whole it pretty cool. Watch The Corners still grabs me the most, I’m sure it sounds great live. Looking forward to Bloomington with these set lists they’ve been playing…..
October 27, 2012 at 4:55 pm #139449I like it. not as much as Beyond or early Dino albums but it is becoming one I can see myself going back and listening to over and over in the future. (like I am now)
October 27, 2012 at 11:07 pm #139450Been taking care of a new baby and playing IBOS and CCR for the little guy. Life is good!
October 28, 2012 at 10:54 am #139451I was late on getting IBOS but I got it yesterday. No complaints.Everything seems to go nicely together.I hoping for a See It On Your Side/Turnip Farm medley live someday!
November 3, 2012 at 8:58 am #139452I was going to do my in order favourite tracks from IBOS, and I kept writing it out (including the b-sides black Betty etc)
And I can’t………. The album / songs play out in my opinion without a standout track or flawed one ? Randomly take beyond, for me were not alone/pick me up and what if I knew destroy(yep I review for NME : ) but nothing is amazing and nothing is bad on IBOS ….. It’s just a good record … And for me and my last words on the album, that’s all I could want ! -
