Well, after trying to register for over six months, I was finally able to do so! I was all pissed off cuz I couldn’t register…but I finally did about a month ago and never got around to posting anything yet. I’ve been a big dino/J fan for about ten years, don’t know exactly how I heard about him, but it was probably from one of my friends in school. I can appreciate almost any kind of music (love polkas…brings back memories of wedding receptions here in PA), but some of my favorite bands/artists are Mark Lanegan, Mike Johnson, Afghan Whigs, (don’t think I need to mention J.), and I’ve been listening to a lot of country and bluegrass lately. Saw J. at the North Star the other month…man is that place deep! My bro and I sat at the bar drinking porter while Sea of Cortez was playing (there were only about three people there when we arrived, so we got nice seats at the bar). Sooo, when we got into the other room, I only made it about half way up, and I could hardly see a thing…but I did manage to get a nice pic of the back of someone’s head. I have some boots (a few Whigs boots too), and I love to trade so drop me a line sometime. Anyway, I’ll shut up now and just say it’s nice to be here.

May 1, 2002 at 12:37 am #61240I’m definitely enjoying it here so far…nice to hear from some other people with similar tastes. I was really starting to think that this site just didn’t like me. For months every time I entered my birthday and accepted the terms, it said the info was not sent. After this, it would take my birthday info, let me fill out my profile, and then either say the username was already used (and I came up with some weird ones that I KNOW nobody would use), or it would say something like a flood filter was enabled and I should try back later….very strange experience indeed.
Salami…have you ever had the pleasure of seeing the Whigs live? In ’99 I saw them in State College, and saw the Twilight Singers in Philly last year. I have all of the whigs’ albums, including Big Top Halloween on vinyl (don’t ask how much I paid for it on ebay!). That’s kinda funny, cuz I was talking to a guy at a record store in State College and he said they used to have Big Top Halloween on consignment from the band! I guess they played there in the early nineties as well. I also have a copy of it on cd if you would like one, and at least three live shows, and the twilight singers in Boston. Black Love is my favorite…
Anyway, guess I’ll just settle in here, and wait for J to come back to PA…and get a descent spot on the floor next time instead of sucking on those bottles of porter.May 1, 2002 at 10:07 am #61241Hi and welcome Ohsoloco
The Whigs are definitely in my top four favourite groups ever (with Archers of Loaf, Dinosaur and Pavement). But, without a doubt, they are the best live band I have ever seen. Greg was born to be a rock star. I saw them live at a Jools Holland Later deal, they played crazy and somethin’ hot off 1965 – my favourite album. I have seen them about 4-5 times, the first at a UK festival – the first time I heard Milez iz Ded. Was instantly hooked, and bought Congregation straight away. Really upset they split up – haven’t heard any of his solo stuff.
Any recommendations?
Good to have you aboard, skip.

May 1, 2002 at 10:35 am #61242I never saw the Whigs live before, they never did play here as far as I know,I remember the first time I heard of them in 92 on the radio, two girls on the local college station used to play them alot, they used to play Dino alot too;Congregation was their fav album of 92;it took me the longest time to buy anything by them though,it was`nt until 98 until I bought Gentlemen, which was the first album I bought by them and then realized I should have bought it back in 93!Dulli has a great voice whether he`s screaming or crooning and Rick`s guitar playing was wicked,I loved his slide playing.
May 1, 2002 at 12:07 pm #61243hi folks…..i’m new here too (sort of). been coming to the site for quite a while now, but finally decided to register. ohsolo, i was at that early 90’s whigs show in state college…it rocked hard. also saw camper van beethoven there in the late eighties, another great show. is the record store you mentioned Arboria perchance……i bought alot of vinyl from them when i lived there…..great store.
May 1, 2002 at 1:56 pm #61244Welcome to the boards wireland
May 1, 2002 at 4:04 pm #61245Wireland, I was actually referring to City Lights Records…the guys that work there are really great, and they still get a descent amount of new vinyl. Arboria isn’t the same anymore, not since they moved out of that dark, dungeon of a basement…and the people that work there aren’t very friendly anymore (at least not to me or anyone else I know that shops there). Arboria is definitely the place for old vinyl, though. Problem is, they know what it’s worth, and expect an arm and a leg for the stuff. Goodwill is the place to go for vinyl if you get there when the new stuff comes in…got a great Eddie Harris album there for twenty five cents! I must agree about the whigs live as well, that concert in SC was the best live show I had ever been to…they were real entertainers. Dulli doesn’t look too bad in a boa….and I think he was higher than a friggin’ kite when he first came out on the stage…at least we were both in the same state of mind…
May 1, 2002 at 4:07 pm #61246ohsolo,,,,,,, that breaks my heart!! i didn’t even know they moved….that dingy basement was the best! do you know if josh still owns arboria? city lights was also very cool, can’t think of the guys name, but he turned me on to some good cheeba…..evan johns, dick dale………..shame that arboria has gone downhill………
May 1, 2002 at 5:59 pm #61247So many Pennsylvanians on the board!
