I thought instead of adding this to the
turntable section we`d have a new section
where we mention what we just bought.
This morning I bought:
Sonic Youth-Sister(Finally!)
Jimmie Dale Gilmore-Fair And Square
Nanci Griffith-20th Century masters series
(cheap compilation but good)(I hope Jebus
approves of these 2)
Wierd Nightmare:Mediations On Mingus
(I had this on tape before,it`s awesome!
It`s Jazz and Rock musicians playing Mingus`s
music;including Don Byron,Bill Frisell,Elvis Costello,Henry Rollins,Leonard Cohen,Robert
Quine(used to play with Richard Hell and the
Voidoids),Robbie Robertson,etc.)

Hey salamiguy,
Two things; one, good topic and two, you must have went on a CD run. Those can really wipe out a budget. When I need a "fix" I can easily spend 75 bones.

Are you near a used CD dealer? there are some great finds there if you can find a shop. I got Kyuss–Queens of the Stone Age at one in Columbia, CD kicks.

Recently I bought a video MTV’s Underground (1989) just because of Dinosaur Jr. The video has the music video of "Little Fury Things." It’s pretty cool… the video is shot like a home video black and white with a kind of harpo marx silent movie tecqnique. The some editing has been done to create "preschool" pencil drawings over top the video… It really is coooool. Glad I found the find.

Peace.

American dollars are like 3/4 as much, I think. Not bad prices.

Hey Salmiguy,

Hope to have a whole bunch to post about in a couple of days. ELJ I wish the Canadian dollar was that strong, sadly it is worth less than .60 American. What can you do though…

I bought yesterday:

Weezer – Weezer (2001)
APC – Mer De Noms [2nd copy]
Coldplay – Parachutes [2nd copy]
NIN – Downward Spiral [2nd copy]
Radiohead – Pyramid Song EP

I just got a CD player for my car, and I wanted doubles of some of my favorite albums so I don’t have to unload my changer.

Last time I was in Canada was like 6-7 years ago. Was it around that strong then? Cause I remember my Dad telling me that was the exchange rate. Although he might have just been total b/s’ing me since he might not have known.

I think 6-7 years ago the canadian dollar was
around 65 cents, going up or down just slightly.
But I never watched TV at that time so I did`nt see any info on that then, but it usually
stays around 65 cents,at least over the past few years.

ELJ, just a CD player. Did you not buy some bass, mids and highs. Man, I’ll tell you. You thrown in some of that music in a car stereo that has bass and you ARE ROCKING. Sorry to offend you if you don’t or if you don’t care for that sort of thing.

Peace.

No, actually, I put in a pretty nice sound system as well. I’m not really into playing it too awfully loud, because I always thought that was stupid. I do pump up the bass on occasion though.

I forgot to mention that these CD`s did`nt cost too much.$17.99 for the SY,$11.99 for
the Griffith, and $9.99 each for the Gilmore
and Mingus tribute.
I do have used CD place near me,going to them can be the worst mistake of your life.
I got into the habit of trading CD`s and messed up my collection bad. There is good part though,I have about 90 CD`s I have`nt
even listened to!I decided that I`m not
going to go to anymore used places anymore
or at least trade no more. The guy at the place
is nice,so I`m glad I helped out his business
as well as giving people a chance to buy
music cheaper, even though it does hurt the
artist or the label, but I bought tons of CD`s
new and don`t feel too guilty about used, but
I don`t think I`ll be doing anymore trades to
used stores.
The Little furry things video is great, saw it
years ago.

The all music guide gave that Cannonball album 2 stars, out of 5!

Just came back from the music store, bought:
Built To Spill-Ancient Melodies From The Future

Cannonball Adderley-Cannonball`s Bossa Nova
Have you heard this one dimpfelmoser?
It`s with the bossa rio sextet of Brazil,Sergio Mendes plays piano on it.When I listen to it enough I`ll give my opinion,it should be good.

Hey Salamiguy
I actually got Cannonballs stab at Bossa Nova 4 months ago for a mere 15 Deutsch Marks. Now that´s something like 7 US Dollars. I already knew some of the tracks from various compilations and I´m not a big fan of Cannonballs saxplaying. Too straightforward for me. But Sergios pianostyle is great as ever.
Recently I got a double CD from Bud Shank (the Bossa Nova Years) which is much better. Bud Shank did some work with Laurindo Almeida in the 50s. They recorded the Braziliance Vol 1 & 2 albums before the term Bossa Nova existed. More Jazz than Samba actually but still worth listening to. Anyway, this other Bud Shank double CD compiles recordings from the early sixties and has Sergio Mendes on several tracks. Bud Shank plays flute and Saxophone, so there is a bit of variation.
Great Stuff.
Some thoughts about buying CDs in general. Jobrelated I have to move around a bit (like from next month on I work in Hamburg) and lugging your CD collection with you is a real pain in the ass. Mind you, vinyl is even harder and I noticed that in recent years I no longer feel the urge to own everything that takes my fancy. Try to concentrate on the things that really do something new for me and otherwise feel really good spending money on things that you don´t have to carry home (gigs, cinema, clubs, ect). Gosh, I felt so free when I threw most of my books away, cause I realised I won´t read them again; rather read some new stuff.
