Allison-heard about that cyberpunk album before, sounds good.
Eggwater-the Incredible String Band are cool, the album I have is "the hangman`s beautiful daughter",their lyrics are so absurdly funny-"Next week a monkey is coming to stay".
Turnipfarmer-Slowdive;have those first 2 you mentioned,"Just for a day"-which I did`nt like,except for a few songs;"Suvlaki"-like that one,`Alison` is one of my fav tunes(ever hear that one Allison?)there`s also that great cover of Lee Hazlewood`s`Some velvet morning`.
Walkabouts-can`t find their stuff here, they do some cool Townes Van Zandt covers which I heard at a Townes web site.August 1, 2001 at 11:14 am #65442Hey Salmiguy,
Nope haven’t heard that song, sounds like I should. More than a few songs about my name…cool!!!

too bad you dislike "Just For A Day". the three slowdive records were some of my favs the last few months. each is completely different from the others. "Pygmalion" is the most quiet one – very thrifty orchestrated, feathery singing, just ONE suitable record to do the things you prefer to do twosome. one track on it is called "J’s Heaven". HOHO!
"Devil’s Road" is a great record to start with The Walkabouts as well as "Setting The Woods On Fire".

August 1, 2001 at 12:32 pm #65444Hey Turnipfarmer:
Speaking of Slowdive, have you ever checked out Mojave 3?You problably know it`s made up of ex-Slowdive people;I don`t have their first album but their second album Out Of Tune is great,as well as their third Excuses for Travellers from last year. It`s different than Slowdive;more acoustic and Folk/country influenced but still has a ambient glow while using acoustic instruments.Neil Halstead has a voice pretty close to Nick Drake`s,Rachel`s voice is lovely as well.Out Of tune would be my pick to check out first.

August 2, 2001 at 8:02 am #65446Hey Samaliguy,
thanks for the hint as to Mojave 3!
I’ll check ’em out when I get the chance.
do ya have any further recommendations concerning other bands like slowdive/Mojave3?
I would put the Cranes (as I said before to me Alison Shaw has one of the lovliest voices on the planet) into this case as well as the Cocteau Twins.Lars
August 2, 2001 at 10:43 am #65447The Mojave 3 album to check out is their second album-"Out Of Tune";as I said it`s in a Nick Drake/Neil Young Folk/country vein,it`s 3 ex Slowdive people.
The Cranes-back in 98 I saw "Population 4" in a music store and thought I`d buy it;I never heard any of their music before, when I heard Allison`s voice I did`nt like it,it was like Juliana Hatfield to the 9th degree; But I kept listening to it and after awhile I started really liking it,her voice I started liking more too;I also found a copy of "Forever" around which I like even better than "Population 4".Their guitar playing is bizzare,it`s kind of like My Bloody Valentine`s guitar trickery, not really sure what they`re doing but it sounds cool.
Cocteau Twins-Love them; One day I was walking home from High School and down the road from my school was this used book store, very small place,I went in and looked around and found a copy of Cocteau Twins-"Heaven Or Las Vegas" cd and Bob Mould-"Black Sheets Of Rain" on tape.I heard the Cocteau`s on the radio in an interview, very nice people and they played 2 songs from "Four Calender Cafe",that`s when I first heard of them,"Heaven Or Las Vegas" is my favorite album by them, beautiful songs.
Other bands in this style I`ll think about and post later.August 2, 2001 at 10:50 am #65448I just bought…
1 Mediteranean Calzone
1 Minestrone soup
1 bottle of mineral water
1 local newspaperRock n Roll huh?!
August 2, 2001 at 11:54 am #65449Hey Turnipfarmer:
I thought up some bands of the Slowdive type:
Lush-You problably know them, their early stuff was Cocteau Twins influenced, their final album in 96 was more Brit pop.check out their early stuff if you have`nt already.
Medicine-american band that I find kind of uneven, sometimes good sometimes boring, their ep Sounds of medicine features a song with the Cocteau Twins and a song remixed by Billy Corgan and drums by Jimmy Chamberlain,it also has a 16 minute noise piece live in New Orleans.Their album the Buried Life is something to check out,I only heard one tune from it but it does sound good.
Spiritualized-If you have`nt checked them out,do so,they have a new album out soon, check out their 97 album-Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, their music is orchestral, trumpets, saxs, violins, choirs, etc.but still keep loud guitars up front,I think of them being a cross between the Velvet Underground and Sun Ra.
His Name Is Alive and Pale Saints-have`nt checked out their stuff so I can`t tell you much but they`re in the vein of Slowdive type stuff I`m told.August 2, 2001 at 12:01 pm #65450thanks for the effort, Salami!
heard of the Cocteaus a few months back when my girlfriend played me a tape. Got ourselves some CT records and really am into ’em now. yeah, "Pop4" & "Forever" are some good choices to start with the Cranes. also recommed the "Loved" album, has got songs on it including the weird guitar playing you know from "Forever".
as to My Bloody Valentine, what would you say to start with this band? I guess I never heard a single tune of them, sacrilege me!
bought the new Built To Spill record yesterday and listen to it in the bureau right now. no major changes in their music, just love it though.
also bought 2 bottles of medium carbonic dioxided table water, a choclate bar and a gem with cheese, ham, cucumber and tomatoes – my lunch today.

August 2, 2001 at 12:11 pm #65451MBV – you need – You Made me Realise 12"/Isn’t Anything LP/Loveless LP/Glider EP/Feed Me with your KIss EP.
Pale saints – First album "Comforts of Madness" is great, their follow up "In Ribbons" has it’s moments though is arguably a bit indulgent. Not heard the third but remember that the guy (Ian) who sang had left, though they proclaimed a love for Slint which was kinda interesting.
Also just bought 2 Salbutamol asthma relievers…ahhhhhhh! Those drugs are fantastic.
OUT………..
August 2, 2001 at 12:15 pm #65452My picks for My Bloody Valentine would be Loveless first,One of my all time fav albums and Is`nt Anything second;you should be able to find them, their bass player was from Germany!plus their still pretty popular in indie music circles even 10 years later since the release of Loveless.
August 2, 2001 at 12:38 pm #65453Yeah Eggwater is right;check out the stuff Eggwater mentioned by MBV;also check out the Strawberry Wine and Ecstasy EP`s,which has been issued on cd as Ecstasy And Wine;I found a copy of it 2 years ago in a used store,I think it`s out of print and problably hard to find, look around for it anyway;Do you have those EP`s Eggwater?
Stupid me traded that cd to a friend for a few cd`s,he traded it to someone else and who knows where it is now!I taped it anyway so I can still listen to it,I wish I kept the cd though!August 2, 2001 at 1:09 pm #65454I have those EPs yeah….all on Vinyl of course…
I don’t have Ecstasy and Wine though that’s rare on vinyl…it’s not very good though. They’re very first LP’s not too good either…I got them off Napster…the songs are good but they’re so badly produced…no dynamics…Isn’t Anything is a great partner to Yr Living all over me…they could meld together and have some kid vinyls of indie rock w/ effects pedals…
sorry for being a bit surreal…it’s been a long day at work and there’s still an hour left.
