Paradiso…big hall yesterday.
A totaly sold-out Paradiso. Elvis Costello played for about one hour and a half, 18 songs that covered most of his career. No "She", "we don’t play that shit tonight", he proclaimed!. Great sound, awesome drummer/baseplayer and ofcourse on keyboards, the wizzard Steve Naieve. Elvis played some songs of his excellent new album like "Alibi" and also some classics like "Lipstick vogue" and "I don’t wanna go to Chelsea". Highlight for me and the other 2999 people, was the encore: "I want you". When he finished that one all paradiso was covered with gooseflesh…my god…Ice on my back…starting as a lovesong and ending as a cry for help because his girl is doing it with "that clown". And slowly he stept back from the microphone, leaving the crowd speechless….47 years of age…still very relevant!
At just a quarter before 10 o’clock it was all over. I managed to climb the stairs to attend Grant Lee Phillips at the small hall, and guess who I shaked hands with?? The author of the review just above this one!![ 04-16-2002, 04:31 PM: Message edited by: Hansione ]
April 17, 2002 at 2:31 am #73703Grant Lee Phillips – small hall Paradiso Amsterdam April 15th
Very fine gig of the ex-Grant Lee Buffalo frontman. GLP alternated between acoustic guitar, piano and banjo and was accompanied by a guy playing the violin. He played a nice selection of his latest two solo-albums, I didn’t like the sound of the last one (‘Mobilize’) thought it sounded a little too ‘electronic’, but in this ‘unplugged’ setting it all worked extremely well. He only played two Grant Lee Buffalo songs (‘Mighty Joe Moon’ and as an encore ‘Fuzzy’). He didn’t talk that much during the gig ("….we enjoy being here, but we only have got one hour, so here’s the next one…"), he stretched that "one hour" to about one and an half hour, and afterwards I had a long talk with him, sitting on the side of the stage, sipping some beers, great to see and hear that one of the artists you have admired for many years is such a nice and friendly person in real life as well…..
In short, a very memorable and enjoyable night!!!

April 17, 2002 at 8:44 pm #73704J mascis…and it kicked arse!
Never knew an accoustic guitar could sound so sweet!!!Cobra Verde came out and warmed up the crowd. J periodically came out side-stage to watch. I’d never heard them B4…so it was a new experience for me. Will definately give them another listen when I get the chance. Part way through, the singer stopped to give props to Columbus. Then he gave mad props to USED KIDS (an incredible local record store). No one really gave him any feedback and he went on to say that he liked Columbus so much and apparently he knew it better than us…[or else we’d be clapping when he mentioned USED KIDS]. Apparently, he doesn’t realize it burned to the ground a while back. They were able to salvage some of their stuff, but all in all, pretty tragic.
I had two extra tix to the show. I’ve had them for two weeks. In that time, I think they’ve changed possession 8-9 times. So I left one in the mailbox for my one friend who said she’d definately go. The other I took w/ me so I could give to the hot date I had on Saturday who said she’d show up after work. Now here’s the catch. I don’t have a cellular phone. So I was going to use the 1st girls phone and have Saturday’s date call it when she got down to Little Bro.’s so I could meet her outside and give her this ticket. Well, of course, girl #1 never showed up (the ticket was still in the mailbox when I got home). So, I never got to see girl #2 and have no idea if she even showed up. Jesus, two absolutely free tix, to J Mascis nonetheless, and both get absolutely wasted!!! In the words of J, "everybody let me down". What the hell’s wrong w/ people? Allright, with that out of the way…
Cobra Verde stops playing and in the meantime I go up and meet the TurnipFarmer. (Word up JAMCLARK!)By this time I’ve had a few brew-ha-has and must say was in a pretty good mood even though I’m slowly realizing how much my friends suck! However, this was MY little bro’s 1st J show, so I’m pretty excited for him!
Shortly thereafter, J walks out, sits down, says "HI" and we’re off! J’s kickin’ it solo accoustic again with a pedal for solo effects. J can jam and tonight’s no exception! He plays a few songs and goes into Ammaring and just unloads the most hellacious version I’ve heard yet! (that’s me screaming "you rock J" at the end of Ammaring/beginning of Keeblin’ and apparently the crowd agrees ). So J’s rocking it out, seemed like he was really diggin’ it, and man can he make that accoustic sing! 16 songs later and he’s done. He walks off and the crowd’s begging for more. About 2 minutes later he walks back out, sits back down busts out Quest, a quick Wagon, says "thanx" and gets up and leaves. That’s that.
YOU ROCK J!!!
The crowd at Little Brother’s was one of the nicest concert crowds I’ve encoutered so far. Saw a few people I knew, and met a few more. One of my buddies said he ran into J before the show. Tried bringing up a little chat, but J seemed to be in a very introverted/reclusive mood (which I’m guessing is typical of J). Anyways, my buddy dropped the conversation and said see ya later so J wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable. People were very polite and they were more than willing to let me slide through so I could get some pictures of J. (to my dismay, these didn’t turn out like I wanted ). Sorry to anyone out there if I stepped on your toes!
I’m ripped, and I’m pumped from the show, chug my last beer and it’s off for home. Always glad to take in J’s music whenever the oppurtunity arises. That was my night.
Peace,

April 22, 2002 at 5:14 pm #73705Paradiso, 20 march 2002, Mercury Rev
It was fun to hear Dinosaur jr freakscene coming by, just before the show started; after the song. I was ready for Rev. Irish Whip, maybe I was standing next to you without knowing!
Great show by Mercury Rev. Jonathan Donahue led us through a lot of songs from the last two albums (deserters songs and all is dream) and two nice covers. “Once in a lifetimeâ€April 26, 2002 at 2:28 am #73706Woven Hand – Melkweg (old hall) Amsterdam – April 24
Woven Hand is a side-project of David Eugene Edwards from 16 Horsepower. They played for a quite full old hall yesterday evening, and it was a good gig. Compared to the very dark and thundering sound of 16HP they were a lot ‘lighter’, but the lyrics are still very dark and religious, and it is always impressive to see DEE perform like a man possessed! All in all, a good gig, but I’m hoping to see 16 Horsepower again in the near future (the new 16HP album ‘Folklore’ is scheduled for release at the end of May here in Europe)
May 1, 2002 at 4:07 pm #73707Jurassic 5–April 30th Club Laga–Pittsburgh, Pa
Any freakscener that is a love of hip-hop should really check these guys out. Great live show, the 4 MCs have an awesome report, and each posesses an unreal flow. The 2 DJs lay down pretty thick tracks as well. Opening group was a local thing that isn’t really worth mentioning…
May 1, 2002 at 4:31 pm #73708hit the wine………i’m jealous!! i wanted to go to that show sooooooo bad…….
May 1, 2002 at 4:39 pm #73709btw……31st st. pub is the best place for live shows in the ‘burgh…….
May 2, 2002 at 10:20 am #7371031st hasn’t been getting bands I dig lately. They had Quasi a few months ago, and I think Mike Watt is coming, but that’s about it. I kind of like Rosebud, Laga is meh. The absolute worst is M. God that place sucks, and Ben Folds insists on coming there. Well, at least he’s coming to Pittsburgh…
May 2, 2002 at 3:39 pm #73711Garbage (Opening Act: Abandoned Pools) – The NorVa, Norfolk, VA – May 1st
Wow, what an amazing show. First of all, mad props to the venue, the NorVa which is the greatest club on Earth. When they say the opening act goes on at 8 PM, they mean 8 PM, unlike Richmond clubs where 8 PM means 3 the next morning. Also, the NorVa is well ventilated, huge, and does not allow smoking which is simply fantastic. And somehow, even though I got there only 15 minutes before the first band went on, everyone was still in the restauraunt so I was able to get hella close to the stage, about 4 people back, maybe 10 feet from where shirley would be and 8 feet from Duke.
The opening act was Abandoned Pools which sounded alot like SP only where SP would’ve ended a song, Abandoned Pools felt the need to go into the chorus again. Their bass player looked like she was orgasmig all show. They played for 40 minutes. The NorVa crew of about 12 guys then got all AP’s stuff off the stage and Garbage’s stuff on in, oh, 15 minutes, which once again is opposed with Richmond where the same process would be done by 1 guy and have taken 4 days.
Garbage was awesome, and this was the best concert I’ve ever been at, bar none (Pumpkins included). They dimmed the lights and the band came on and all the covers were removed revealing an awesome light show and a drum kit with the BeautifulGarbage logo. Shirley came out looking hot and rolled off "Push It," "Temptation Waits," "I Think I’m Paranoid," and "Special" right in a row [note: the setlist is written on my arm!] which got the crowd jumping. Not moshing mind you, but up and down jumping and throwing fists in the air, which was good fun since I don’t enjoy getting the snot beaten out of me by bigger guys but still like moving.
The shows highlights had to be "Cup of Coffee," "Not My Idea," and "Vow" which closed the first set. Another highlight was Shirley saying they’d play this club every tour from now on because it’s the only venue on earth with hot tubs in the artist’s dressing room which caused the male half of the audience to start screaming, "I’ll bathe with you!" At one point they played "Parade" which shirley called the band’s anthem of the year, then she took audience requests. The left side of the room was yelling for "Medication" and the right side (self-included) was yelling for "#1 Crush." Eventually she went with #1 Crush which was awesome.
All and all, an awesome night, other then the bewildering fact that on a tour to promote their new album, they didn’t play the 2 singles off it "Androgyny" or "Breaking Up The Girl." Also, tour staple "Supervixen" was left off much to my disappointment. But still, the energy, the crowd, the venus all added up for an awesome concert.Setlist:

Only Happy When It RainsMay 3, 2002 at 12:23 am #73712The local freakscene Canadians should be proud, as their comrade Hayden put on a pretty good show last night at the casbah in san diego. Not as bad as they seem.
May 3, 2002 at 9:45 pm #73713Teddy Morgan & the Pistolas / Imperial Crowns – Paradiso (small hall), Amsterdam, May 1st
It seemed that all the people in Amsterdam were suffering from a massive Queensday hangover, because the small hall of the Paradiso was nearly empty for those two bands, Teddy Morgan played some excellent high-voltage country-rock in the best Bottle Rockets/Slobberbone/Whiskeytown tradition, even breaking a string midsong didn’t stop him from playing some mean solo….. (and a nice cowboy-hat as well…). After the gig he turned out to be a very nice fellow to talk with as well!
The Imperial Crowns looked like a rock’n’roll parody band when they came on stage in an even emptier hall just before midnight, the singer wearing the reddest suit I’ve ever seen, the guitar player wearing a haircut and sunglasses Elvis-Las Vegas-style, but they played a mean "Sweet n’ Cruel Swamp, Stomp, Rock n’ soul Blues" as they called it themselves, highly enjoyable, shame that there were only about ten people left at the end of the show, but very cool of them to play an encore for those ten people!!!!May 3, 2002 at 9:57 pm #73714Bob Dylan & his band – Ahoy Rotterdam May 2nd
First time I’ve ever been to a Dylan-concert, and I was very impressed. He played a fine mix of old songs (if anyone is interested: check out the setlist ), the band (including Jim Keltner on drums and Charlie Sexton on guitar) was excellent, His Bobness (wearing a fine white cowboy-hat) was singing better than on many of his records, and they looked like they were enjoying themselves playing for about two and a half hours! Absolute highlight: a beautiful version of "Tangled up in blue", great gig!May 4, 2002 at 3:35 pm #73715Hey BR,
Not as bad as they seem, hmmmm
Hayden plays here quite frequently 3 times in the last little while I think. One of the fliers compared his singing with J Mascis…not sure about that one but Hey! He did that video/song for Tree’s Lounge i think, that was a cool thing
Allison
May 4, 2002 at 5:36 pm #73716Hayden said in an interview that his 3 big influences is Tom Waits,Neil Young, and J Mascis ;I`m not a big Hayden fan,he does some cool covers though like the Pixies`s Gouge Away and Wilco`s Pick Up The Change.
