May 31, 2002 at 2:21 am #73733Chuck Prophet / Johnny Dowd – Paradiso Amsterdam, May 29th
Chuck Prophet and his band (ex ‘Green on Red) gave a cool and rocking show, lot of stuff from his latest (very fine) album ‘No other love’, he played for about one and a half hour and gave an encore, not too bad for a ‘support band’ at the Paradiso (and they did a great Dream Syndicate cover as well!)
And Johnny Dowd, either you love him or you hate him, this 54 year old owner of a moving company (‘Zolar Moving Co’ in Ithaca NY) has written some of the most dark songs I’ve ever heard, and live he sounds like a ‘Tom Waits-light’ backed by a surf-guitar-band from hell, with singer Kim Sherwood Case sounding like a cross between Emmylou Harris and a chainsaw…. They also played for nearly two hours, so, it was a long and fascinating night, yesterday at the Paradiso…..
May 31, 2002 at 2:26 am #73734I`ve heard Johnny Dowd before, kinda like if Michael Gira from The Swans was into Hank Williams
May 31, 2002 at 8:03 pm #73735Hi Allison, it wasn’t exactly a Dream Syndicate cover, my memory fooled me there, it was ‘Look both ways’, a song written by Steve Wynn, Chris Cacavas and Chuck Prophet, from the early 90’s (it appears on Wynn’s ‘Fluorescent’ album)
my mistake, Ton

June 7, 2002 at 6:38 pm #73738Neil Halstead – Paradiso (small hall), Amsterdam 6/6
Just one guy, one guitar, one chair, great quiet songs in the best Nick Drake tradition, of course a lot of stuff from his latest fine album (‘Sleeping on roads’), he also played a very fine solo version of the Mojave 3 song ‘ When you’re drifting’.
Although there were only about 30 people Neil was in a good mood (‘Hi Holland, how are you doing in the World Cup?…. ), in short, a very fine intimate show, and after the gig (there were only about three people left at the bar) we all had a beer and a talk with Neil, nice guy!
June 7, 2002 at 7:23 pm #73739Salamiguy–my friend bought both of their other discs! I should get to listen to them soon.
June 8, 2002 at 2:44 am #73740…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead–Club Laga, Pittsburgh, 6/6/02
In a word: AWESOME. Played for about and hour and a half, and switched instruments every song. Loud, but played with alot of feeling. No Relative Ways though . Show was over by 10, which was weird. In between song banter was cool, and made better by weird sound like the in between song stuff on the CD. This was the last show on the US tour, so they were out of instruments and had to borrow some from my favorite used music store. No smashing, but the bass cabinat feel on one of em, and they did knock over the drums. Good stuff!
Opening band was kind of boring. Met alot of people from out of state. Poor fools needed directions in Pittsburgh, where we like to say, "Can’t get there from here!" Ah well, they had a Fugazi sticker on their car so I had them follow me. Trail of Dead=highly recommended!

June 28, 2002 at 6:32 pm #73743Sonic Youth – Paradiso Amsterdam, June 27th
Support act Enon, a trio from NYC featuring Toko Yasuda (ex Blonde Redhead) were not that special, combining a slightly new-wavish sound with some synths and samples, at their best they sounded a little like the Feelies (anyone remember them?), at their worst they sounded like Emerson, Lake and Palmer playing ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ with some bad rapper rapping along
Sonic Youth were just magnificent, playing a lot of stuff from their new excellent album ‘Murray Street’, sounding more tight and controlled than ever, especially the minutes-long perfectly controlled feedback/drone part in ‘Karen Revisited’ was incredible……. Some more highlights: ‘Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style" (strange title, beautiful song) being dedicated to Dee Dee Ramone, the four short punky songs featuring Kim Gordon on vocals (spread evenly through the set and encores), and one of the most beautiful songs of the year ‘Disconnection Notice’ (the first encore).
In short: an amazing gig!!!!
ps. the setlist (from The Sonic Youth Concert Chronology ):
Kotton Krown
Bull in the Heather
The Empty Page
Rain on Tin
Eric’s Trip
Shadow of a Doubt
Karenology
Plastic Sun
Candle
Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style
Sympathy for the Strawberry

July 5, 2002 at 10:19 am #73745Cake, Paradiso, 4 July 2002.
This band was on my list for quite a while. They planned to come in 2001 but the 11th September spoiled that. The gig they played last night was great. A lot of songs from their latest cd “comfort angelâ€July 5, 2002 at 6:05 pm #73746Cake / American Analog Set – Paradiso Amsterdam July 4th
Don’t agree with Hansione’s review completely, Cake wasn’t great, Cake was fun….. I enjoyed the gig, but in musical greatness it was lightyears away from last weeks Sonic Youth gig, it was fun to see all the students enjoying themselves though….
The gig of the American Analog Set in the upstairs hall was really great, den Buck likes this band. Their sound is quite hard to describe, but imagine something between Yo La Tengo and Television crossed with Can, Neu and La Dusseldorf, they only played for about an hour, but it was excellent! Like Hansione said, in July they are on tour in the US with Her Space Holiday (another fine band), if you are interested: here are the tourdates!
