hey den Buck, thanks for the Sonic Youth review by the way. I decided now to go to their gig here on July, 10th (just a few steps away from my flat ). I lost them out of sight after Goo, but the new album is quite fine, and they don’t come around very often … and your set list sounds good, so I’m looking forward to it

July 11, 2002 at 2:39 am #73749Calexico – Melkweg Amsterdam – July 9th
Support act: Chacda (from Belgium), avoid them at all costs, unless you are a really desperate Alanis Morisette fan
Calexico was just great, they can play (and play) everything from jazz to country, from Mexican party music (with lots of horns) to rock, and they did that for more than two hours, excellent!
Some surpises: they were joined by Bjorn Eriksson from Belgian band Zita Swoon on dobro for a short acoustic set, and they did some fine covers as well: The Minutemen’s ‘Corona’ in a Tex-Mex way, and in the second encore they did a great cover of Joy Division’s ‘Love will tear us apart’ (staying very close to the JD version, with just the steelguitar adding some extra sad sounds, amazing!), they ended the show with another cover, Tom T. Hall’s ‘Tulsa telephone book’, brilliant lyrics, brilliant song! In short, a great night again!
July 18, 2002 at 3:26 pm #73750Weezer–Monday July 15th, Blossom Ampitheater outside of Cleveland, Ohio
the good: Best set list I’ve seen Weezer play. This is the third time I’ve seen them in about 7 months, and there was a heavy empasis on Pinkerton and Blue. Coolly cheezy pyro made for a good show. Crowd was pretty hot.
the bad: Muthah@#$@#@$!!!!!!! The Strokes didn’t show. Only reason I went 2 1/2 hours was because they were supposed to open. I’ve seen the =w= enough times!!!!
the ugly: Dashboard Confessional; missed Sparta (half the guys from At The Drive-In) due to getting wasted in the parking lot/woods.
Good show, kind of cool to see someone under 40 in that kind of setting, but I wouldn’t have gone if I knew one of the Strokes would break a limb and not show.
Seeing Guided by Voices on Sunday, and I MAY be able to catch J!!!! Going to miss Karl Hendricks, though.
July 18, 2002 at 4:22 pm #73751RBB-are you sure GBV are playing?I heard that a family member of Doug Gillard passed away and GBV had to cancel some shows.
July 18, 2002 at 9:27 pm #73752Ouch, fingers crossed thats not the case. Shame about The Strokes/KHT, but WOW about that may see J deal…

July 18, 2002 at 10:14 pm #73753Anybody see the ‘lips??? How’re they live?
July 19, 2002 at 1:26 am #73754I’ve seen the Flaming Lips live a couple times. They’re probably the most fun band I’ve ever seen. They seem to have lots of fun up on stage. They’re always seem to do something unexpected. After seeing them once, I haven’t missed them since.
The last time I saw the Lips during the tour for The Soft Bulletin, Sebadoh opened.
Wayne talks to the crowd quite a bit. I can’t remember exactly what Wayne said, but he did mention that playing with Lou reminded him of the great times, when Dinosaur and Sonic Youth where the most important bands in music!July 19, 2002 at 4:44 pm #73755I think the lips just did a show at the knitting factory, start up the big tour on the 31st. Rooster saw them over in europe… lips live
They do can’t get you out of my head…or somethng like that by kylie minogue no doubt its better than the original horrifying song Looking forward to seeing them this summer, loved the MABD tour…

GREAT show. GbV played their usual 2 1/2 hour set, Bob didn’t drink quite as much as usual. Also claimed that Everywhere with Helecopter is "Our new big hit single. Its huge in Japan…I think." Good time, great set and they played so long the people tending bar were getting pissed. Most of all though, the crowd was ROCKING. Two encores included a Beatles and Who cover. Good times.
My week was: Monday Weezer in Cleveland, Friday J in DC, Sunday GbV in Pittsburgh. Three shows in 3 cities in 6 days. Pretty cool, except I am SO hungover today…
July 29, 2002 at 1:10 am #73757Beachwood Sparks/The Shins July 27th, The Magic Stick, Detroit, Mi.
Good show, except the air conditioning wasn’t working. The venue is on a second floor of a two story building. It was at least 90* and humid.
I was really hoping that J would step on the stage to play some guitar for the Beachwood Sparks. That didn’t happen but it still was a pretty good show. It was kind of hard to hear the Sparks vocals, but they played great.
I was really suprised by the Shins. They were a lot better live than I thought they would be.I’m going back to the Magic Stick on Saturday to see Love with Arthur Lee. I’m looking forward to the show, and hoping the air is fixed by then.

Arthur Lee staggered up to the stage eating a piece of watermelon. He threw the piece of watermelon into the crowd, and started rambling incoherently into the microphone. There was a tension in the crowd, everyone thinking that they bought a ticket, and the man they came to see is drunk as hell, and can’t even walk, let alone sing. "I know what you’re all thinking", said Arthur.
Then the group ripped into thier set. It was obvious that Arthur was joking around about being drunk, becasue the show was excellent. Live, the band didn’t have enough performers (horns, strings) to pull off the lush sounds of the albums, but the group more than made up for that with power and energy. I think the songs sounded way better live, than they do on the albums. I’m on a quest to get a Love bootleg now, because the studio albums don’t do this band justice. Here’s a copy of the setlist. The band didn’t play the songs in order, they jumped around quite a bit, but they did play every song.

TomAugust 4, 2002 at 10:44 pm #73761I forgot to mention Jack and Meg from the White Stripes where at the show. Arthur handed her a tambourine, and she went on the stage for House Is Not A Motel and Singning Cowboy. It was agreat show.
