Sonic Youth-Royal Oak Theatre, Michigan, 8-16
The first opening band, Wolf Eyes, was the absolute worst band I’ve seen or heard in my life. They were like a bad combination of N.I.N. and Sonic Boom. Two bands I can’t stand. It was awful.
The second opening band, Brendan Benson, was decent. They reminded me of a combination of Sloan, with a little Beach Boys on steroids mixed in. Basic power pop stuff.
Sonic Youth was Sonic Youth. They are a band that people seem to either love or hate. I’ve seen SY 4 times, and the group sounded better than ever. Unfortunately, they didn’t play my 3 favorite SY songs (Schizophrenia, Teenage Riot, Diamond Sea). They did seem to be in total control of what they’re trying to accomplish sound wise.
Personally, I like when Sy focuses on being melodic. When they go off and make noise for ten minutes I get bored. There was only 2 times during the show when I got bored with the noise tangents.
Disconnection Notice and Kool Thing were my favorites. During Kool Thing, when Kim talks about male, white corporate oppression, she added in a few lines about Mariah Carey that were very funny.
Set list:
Candle
Bull in the Heather
The Empty Page
Rain on Tin
Skip Tracer
Plastic Sun
Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style
Shadow of a Doubt
Karenology
Kissability
100%
Sympathy for the Strawberry

Day two of the Pukkelpop Festival (day one for the Buck, had to miss Thursday because of a party somewhere else ).

Will try to write a full report later this weekend, but a short summary of this day: den Buck saw ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’……

Good: Orange Black, No Use for a Name, the Pattern, Underworld, Ozark Henry, Prong

Bad: Within Temptation, Leaves, Sick of it All

Ugly: Korn, Andrew WK (..but fun….)

…now off to Hasselt for day three…..

Day three of the Pukkelpop festival:

It had rained quite a lot during the night, making a big mess of the terrain (see some pictures here), and it was raining occasionally during the day, so den Buck decided to stay in the big Marquee tent for most of the day, and saw excellent gigs from Danko Jones, Sparta, the Notwist, Motorpsycho (with horn section!), and a not too bad Stooges cover band…

Dissapointing: !6 Horsepower on the main stage (lots of technical problems, the public wasn’t too interested as well)

Completely miscast at Pukkelpop: Guns’n’Roses…

hey dB, dankeschön for the review!
yes, rain sucks on festivals (funny pics!), but seems you had some fun, though.

Beth Orton – Paradiso Amsterdam 9/19

After a very slow (and at moments quite boring) start the gig from this English singer/songwriter got really underway with the great song "Mount Washington" from her latest album "Daybreaker", after which her six-piece band (drums/double-bass/cello/violin/guitar/keyboards) showed that they could rock hard as well (Hansione even called it "acoustic noise" ), a couple of songs featured some beats from some electronic box, revealing her dance-connections (she sings on a couple of Chemical Brothers albums as well), highlight of the evening was a beautiful version of "This one’s gonna bruise", a song written for her by Ryan Adams, only accompanied by cello and acoustc guitar…..

All in all, a fine, not very spectacular gig (with superb sound)

….and afterwards Hansione and den Buck had some fun and beers at the Noodlanding party that followed….. (sort of PM for Hansione: do you remember the names of those three ladies…. )

Last night I was at a joint Gluecifer/Hellacopters gig. It was pure rÃ¥kknrÃ¥ll heaven! Loud, shitty and sonically charged deamons of rÃ¥kk can really put a smile on your face! Hellacopters were tighter than ever on stage, and how Gluecifer could outplay them I still haven’t figured out. But they totally did, so I’m still pretty blown out of my mind.

Allison, if any of these bands come even remotely close(as in the same continent) to you, you gotta go. Feels kinda redundant to say this, as I know you’d probably walk on water to attend a show, but still; GO GO GO GO

hey salami, it seems cat power will soon be cruising through the streets of your town. if you do go, be forewarned that usually she can’t play a song all the way through without screwing it up. of course, if you have seen her before then you already know this. some people don’t mind cause they find her charming and that outweighs it. i’ve seen her twice now and don’t think i will again.

Marah / Baptist Generals / Fred Eaglesmith / Slobberbone – Paradiso Amsterdam – October 4

A fine "alt.country/americana" mini-festival yesterday evening in the Paradiso: Marah played one of the loudest gigs den Buck has ever witnessed, it had nothing to do with alt.country, it just f###ing ROCKED , the ‘country-fans’ in the audience left the hall in a state of shock. At the end of the gig (a lot of feedbacking noise), somehow a bass guitar got broken, and the peghead of a Squier Jazz Bass now has a prominent place in den Buck’s cd-rack!

The Baptist Generals did their own version of very lo-fi alt.country, sounding like a cross between Nirvana unplugged and Will Oldham, den Buck likes them a lot! (and I loved the theremin!)

den Buck can be short about Fred Eaglesmith, he knows how to write decent lyrics, but the music was just terrible stadium-country-rock, but the audience loved it! I left the hall after three songs and outside I met and had a long talk with Chris Flemmons, the ‘head Baptist General’, a very nice guy, and the signed Baptist Generals setlist is now hanging next to a certain part of a demolished Marah bass guitar….

Last band on stage were the mighty Slobberbone, and if they are somewhere in your neighbourhood go and see them, they are excellent! the played a very hard rocking gig in the best Replacements/Big Star/Green on Red tradition, two Neil Young covers: "Don’t cry no tears", and as an encore a blistering version of "Cortez the Killer" (the first time den Buck has heard that song being played in under five minutes )

All in all an excellent night!

chronic pleasure
last night at club passim in harvard square, cambridge ma.
two guys, one guitar and a whole lot a craziness goin’ on.
the club was packed and i mean barely enough oxygen for everyone, but the music kept us alive, happy and demanding if i recollect 4 possibly 5 encores.
i have seen this duo before mebbe 5 years ago and i have wanted to see them again ever since as the lyrics, the performance, and the unbelievable guitar playin’ sticks in yer head like velcro(to itself). my favorite moments included the acappella Yoko Ono, beautiful song and sentiment. also House Party, you do not need to know the words to sing along cuz you have lived it, house party, house party. and the Drive-In song with lyrics like "when the sun’s a settin’, the trees a silhouettin’ " indeed does bring back the time you were stuck in the trunk with the home made popcorn, sneakin’ into the drive-in to save the family some dough, waitin’ to be released by dad/mum. playin’ on the swingset and monkey bars in front of the gigantic screen till dusk when parents yelled the kids back to the car, the bad speaker hooked on the window to enjoy The Rescuers and The Gnomemobile, or Jaws and The Deep, or whatever double feature you remember. elbowin’ yer sister/brother, fightin’ off the mosquitos, ahhhh, yes the good ole days before west nile… chronic pleasure is now based in california(though i jus’ don’t know why) and they gig everywhere so check out their website http://chronicpleasure.com/
and go see this band, i promise like the chronic illness you suffer from chronic pleasure stays with you til the bittersweet end…

DB-I don`t care much for Fred Eaglesmith either,he claims he`s alt country but I don`t hear it,odd that he was on the bill with those other bands and even weirder that the audience liked him!

Doug Martsch w/ Mike Johnson and Ian Waters

To be perfectly honest, I couldn’t take any more and left this show early.
Ian came out and played like 5-6 accoustic songs. Allright for solo accoustic stuff.

Then all three came out and jammed for about 5-6 songs. It must have been all Mike’s stuff cuz it was the most dreary, depressing, tear in my beer stuff I’ve ever heard. If your planning on hitting a telephone pole head on at hi-speed, make sure this shit’s in the radio. The last song they loosened up with some distorted, wailing lead for several minutes. Pretty sweet and was hoping the rest of the show would be like that. Then they stopped and took a break.

Doug came out and played some solo accoustic. Mostly stuff from his new album. He also played some BTS songs, but they were way toned down and tame. He also did a really weak, shortened cover of TARPIT. Went into some more dreary, depressing crap and I walked out. Guess I should of bought his new album b4 going. Just totally not what I was expecting and hoping to hear. Win some, lose some I guess.
