.Sexsmith was great and the aftergig was nice too, a little loud though after the gentle sexsmith gig. Enjoyed drinking a couple of big ones with Db and very happy with with the 10,– euro priced latest Sexsmith album (cobblestone Runway) that I bought after the gig, playing right now on my computer.
And yes it was cold outside. Hansione was wearing a heavy leather bomberjack, a cap (boldy me) som leather gloves. Enough to keep me and my bicycle warm!!December 12, 2002 at 3:55 pm #73808I stay warm the colliegate way, Peacoat and neckscarf all the way.

December 20, 2002 at 3:06 pm #73813Grant Hart – small hall Paradiso 12/19
In one word: AMAZING!

In some more words: Grant Hart played an excellent solo set for about fifty
people in the small hall of the Paradiso, after three songs (including a very beatiful "2541") Grant announced that that was his whole planned setlist, and from then on it was request time, you shouted "Green Eyes", Grant played it, highlights: too many to mention, but "The girl who lived on Heaven Hill", "She floated away", "Books about UFO’s" were just a few….., requests for Bob Mould songs were politely turned down
, and after about two hours (including two encores) Grant ended with a blistering version of "the last days of Pompeii", afterwards he just walked into the audience and talked with the people, signed some tickets (including mine
), great guy, great gig, shame about the small crowd (although the people who were there were really nice, and even sang along with most of the songs
)Afterwards in the main hall, the Stonelove Soundsystem from Jamaica transformed the place into a big reggae disco party, with all kinds of funny smelling clouds of smoke floaring around….
, Yah Man, pass the sensi….PS. in one of the evening papers tonight there was a ‘review’ of the Grant Hart gig, the reviewer had left the hall after about five songs, because it was too loud… :slap:
December 20, 2002 at 6:08 pm #73814Too loud
Sounds like a great show, gotta love the way he takes requests!!! Fingers crossed he does the same thing in January, hoping to hear Come Come, All My Senses, Evergreen Memorial Drive…and about thirty more
December 20, 2002 at 6:27 pm #738152541,,,awesome!!

May 21, 2006 at 3:25 pm #73816Neko Case / 20 may 2006 / Paradiso small hall
January 2003 was the last time Neko Case visited Amsterdam. I can recall that one pretty good and apart of the singing capability of Neko I was impressed that night by her side kick Jon Rauhouse. This guy supported Neko?s voice by pure steel guitar playing. I was lucky, he is still is in her band. On her last album she was supported by the Calexico tandem + Garth Hudson. Of course they didn?t come to Amsterdam; but no harm done. She brought a perfect band. Rauhouse on al kind of (steel) guitars and banjo, Paul Rigby on guitar, a stand up bass, drums in the style of John Convertino (Calexico) and another side kick; Rachel Flotard. She gave extra body to the voice of Neko and she also brought the looks. My god I was instant in love with this cat
. I had the chance to talk with her afterward, almost asked her to marry me but I wasn?t drunk enough
. She is the lead singer of Visqueen.
Okay the concert. It was superb. Neko sang so pure, with that cry in her voice. Playing on four-string guitar or just singing. The two voices were blending perfect. It is a pity that Neko has the charisma of the president of Holland. Otherwise I?m sure she would play the big hall instead of the small on.
They played a lot of her last album; ?? Fox confessor brings the blood?, but also a lot of ?Blacklisted?. During the encore I asked for ?I?m waiting for the sunrise?. Jon plays in this song the role of Les Paul while Neko ?plays? Mary Ford. Unfortunately she wasn?t willing to take the risk, but I saw a twinkle in Ron?s eyes like he was thinking: Yes! On the other hand, Neko made a brilliant version of Dylan?s ?Buckets of rain? It was nice to watch and listen to Paul Rigby, playing really small, adding exactly the right guitar sounds.
Great evening and if you have the change to see her: GO! You wont be disappointed when you like melancholically Americana.
Afterwards it was a bit strange at the bar, Young blond girls and macho boys, mixed with a amaricanalovers, average age 35.
I soon found out why: The concert in the big hall ended at the same time: Intwine, anther shity Kean-clone. God I hate this band ( oeps other thread)
HansioneMay 21, 2006 at 4:33 pm #73817Cool review Hans but how was Catherine Irwin?

I’ve been downloading a couple of songs but I don’t think this band makes the best of Rachel’s voice…but well ofcourse I’m in love

Cool 45 minute set by this 3-man (guitar/banjo, guitar, basic drum kit) band from Canada in the best recordshop in the universe
, they play a kind of ‘death-country’, and if you like the Gun Club and/or 16 Horsepower they are definitely worth a listen, lots of people bought their records afterwards (and I had mine signed…
). when I showed guitarplayer Casey Laforet the copy of J. Mascis ‘Live at CBGB’s’ that I just bought, he turned out to be a big Dino fan….
I had to show him the Dinosaur Jr. section in the store, and I think he ended up buying all the re-releases…. -
