March 11, 2003 at 11:03 am #85098Brendan Benson / the Flaming Lips – Melkweg Amsterdam 3/10
Brendan Benson and his band played a cool three quarter of an hour set of very fine power punk pop, a little like the Posies, Fountains of Wayne or Weezer, den Buck had never heard of him, but will surely check his cd, a very pleasant surprise….

After a short break it was time for the Flaming Lips, the band dressed in bizarre rabbit, zebra and elephant suits, Wayne Coyne dressed smartly in a very cool suit
From opener "Race for the Prize" on, it was just one and a half hour of great visual and musical spectacle, so many things happening, balloons flying through the crowd, dancing go-go chimps, ducks and tigers on the side of the stage, all kinds of things happening on the video-screen, mr. Coyne throwing kilos of confetti and glitter stuff into the crowd, blood, singing "Happy Birthday" for a couple of people in the crowd, karate demonstrations by a zebra, strobe lights, smoke, Teletubbies, more balloons, and the most amazing thing: the music was excellent as well, a lot of stuff from "Yoshimi", but some fine older stuff as well…, and after a long encore, they left, and den Buck didn’t notice anyone in the sold-out hall without a big smile on their face afterwards…..

All in all, one of the most amazing shows den Buck has ever seen, and Wayne Coyne announced that they will be back in the summer, if you got the chance to see them, go and see them!!!!!!!!
March 11, 2003 at 4:53 pm #85099I have told my mother to get another birthdate…so I’ve missed this gig
Db read the "parool review" they didn’t realy like it

I’ll stick to your review

I was a little late. My ticket said 20:30, witch normally means 21:00, but when I arrived at the right time, Jools already had begun. Jools Holland, known for is participation in the late seventies /start of the eighties-band Squeeze. Songs like “Cool for Catsâ€
March 17, 2003 at 2:25 pm #85102I was wondering what happened to Sam Brown
March 19, 2003 at 12:59 pm #85103The Kills – Paradiso (small hall) Amsterdam 3/18
If we are to believe the hype the Kills are the next in the White Stripes / Raveonettes line of bands, well, it’s true, they are a boy/girl duo, and they play rock’n’roll reduced to it’s bare bones. They entered the stage of the (packed) small hall, turned up their amplifiers to 100, turned on their drumcomputer, boy started choppin’
on his guitar, girl started screaming like PJ Harvey when she was young
, while moving a little disoriented (too much Amsterdam???
) over the stage, and that’s basically what they did for about 12 songs in 40 minutes (and a short encore), and somehow the formula worked nicely, a very enjoyable and LOUD gig…..
If you got the chance, go and see them, recommended by den Buck!March 20, 2003 at 1:34 pm #85104george clinton and the p-funk all stars: club laga, pittsburgh, PA 3/18.
all i can say is holy funkin’ shit. i’ve seen these guys a few times now, and this show was one of the best yet (although no bootsy). were supposed to hit the stage at 9:00, but didn’t until almost 11. several doobies and iron city’s later, i was in full funk mode. the band played until just about 2am, my legs were like fucking rubber by then. i may need to go see the chiropractor after that one
March 20, 2003 at 7:12 pm #85105Spinvis // Paradiso // 18-3-03
A surprising set. Spinvis made his debutcd solo in a small room in a smalltown in Holland. The atmospere om thos cd was very intimate and that made it easy to forget that Spinvis ins’t a good singer, the lirycs and the originality of the songs made it worthwhile. Now he was in Paradiso, a capacitycrowd. It was a fantastic concert. Instead of his computer and samples he brought a eight-piece band. Vibraphone, bazookie, accordion, piano (the same rent-one Joole Holland used days before). It was a intimate set, supported by some video images. Nice to see "Ronnie gaat naar huis"en …..ik ben een vrouw van veertig….
His voice wasn’t longer the isue. A fantastic concert, he played all the songs of his album but just a bit different than the way I know hese songs…and I realy know them.
Age on stage about 50 but with the enthousiasm of…..me
Afterward I went to the kills. A lot of noice, a lot of screaming and a lot of bull-shit drumcomputers. I had too much Spinvis inside of me to apreciate these White striped, raveonette cloons. Shut and make some music! Fortunately I met Db..the beers and shearing the sence of humor made it an nice gig for me…..March 22, 2003 at 6:16 pm #85106I just saw Frank Black and the Catholics 3/21/03. Totally kicked ass!!!!!! Absolutely rocked!!!!

Opening band-The Benny’s (SP?). They were ok, mostly just power chord stuff w/ some moderate soloing.

Then David Lovering (former Pixies drummer) came out for the second set and we had approximately 20 minutes of Bill Nye the Science guy in the form of David Lovering. Pretty cool. He talked about the government studying vortex rings (think smoke rings) and using it to disable planes but it never worked. However, it made for a cool show because he filled a kick drum with smoke and shot rings all across the bar. He then hooked a pickle up to 120volts and illuminated the stage. He also had a meteorite and by hooking an antenna up to it he could make a metal ring levitate. He was also able to catch a cell phone on fire and blow up a microphone using the meteorite. Cool huh? To finish, he grabbed a girl form the audience and I ‘m not sure how exactly this was all set up but between the two of them, an antenna on his head, and her holding some metal rings, they were able to light up a florescent buolb! He also did a little Pixies Q&A w/ the crowd and unfortunately the Pixies will never be getting back together.

Finally Black Francis stepped on stage followed by the rest of the band and the crowd went nuts. Frank Black is nothing what I expected. He is older, bald, and semi- overweight. He appears relatively tame and laid back. I found it incredibly hard to believe this guy on stage is the same man who I’ve come to know as the excitable, energetic, demented, screaming, Spanish speaking, extremist, vocalist who sings about death, molestation, inbreeding, fucking, drugs, environmetal issues, love, and hate, that I’ve always pictured in my mind after years of Pixies listening.
They started of with ‘where is my mind’. Incredibly fitting start especially with the “cooingâ€
March 22, 2003 at 6:32 pm #85107sounds like an amaaaazingly excellent experience and show
– when i first saw pictures of him i was a little shocked aswell, i always imagined him looking really differnet after listening to his music.March 24, 2003 at 12:06 pm #85108K7-thanks for the review of FB
hope to hear your Bettie Serveert review soon
April 4, 2003 at 12:21 pm #85109Saw Frank Black last night, Amazing! I got there halfway through David Loverings thing because of weather and ticket problems but everything was basically the same as as what the other guy just posted. The show was very high energy and Frank is definetly not over the hill yet, like a washed up prize fighter that still has a lot of punch. I think as a songwriter he is almost untouchable. Set list: (slightly out of order, should have brought my mini-disc)
Gouge Away
Freedom Rock
Cactus
I want rock and roll
crackity jones
hermaphroditos is my name
cold heart of stone
where is my mind?
california bound
bullet
Jane, the Queen of love
(unknown, countrified song)
(IT’s a beautiful day????)
Robert Onion
Sir Rockabye
Headache
(Manitoba)
Holiday Song
MOnkey gone to heaven
mr. grieves
Nimrod’s son
dirty olde towne (pogues)
wisky in your shoes
los angeles
six-sixty-six
all my ghostsI’ve heard stories of Frank being grumpy or not appreciating his audience but I found that to be absolutely not the case. Maybe it’s because he was so well received. Saskatoon isn’t jaded because we don’t get legends legends like him too often. I also heard that some people found his shows to be a total bore but maybe he pepped things up a bit lately now that he started playing Pixies songs. Very high energy, sweating, yelling, shit yeah!
David Lovering signed all of my pixies cd liners and I waited for Frank at the stage. He signed all 15 of my CD Liners! Without hestitation, I said "you don’t have to sign them all, you worked hard and now you’re carrying your own stuff" he said "as long as long as you bought them all" and I said "well some were second hand" He seems like a really nice and genuine guy. The only regret is not bringing a camera or my mini-disc.
April 4, 2003 at 1:50 pm #85110On Wednesday night I saw Songs:Ohia, and the show started past 11 pm, and that’s late, especially for a Wednesday night…
The support act was a guy who did some quiet, melodic songs with his guitar. Didn’t get his name, but really devoted S:O fans probably know who he was…
The venue is in the attic of a big classical theatre (100 steps!
), and I guess they could begin with live shows there only after the main show in the theatre is finished because of the noise. I haven’t seen any announcements for the show anywhere, and even the common monthly local magazines here mentioned it with just a few uninterested words. The venue isn’t "in" or wellknown, and there was no advance tickets sale.So I was surprised that the room was packed with about 300 people, and most of them knew S:O & appreciated the show very much.
Around 12pm, the show finally started. It was a show with a full band & they created the kind of sound like on the new record (the Magnolia Electric Co), and as I’m really into this record I enjoyed the show, although I don’t know the entire S:O oeuvre, and I actually had some problems to get into the more silent records of S:O so far.
They played at least 2 songs of the Magnolia record, and the last 2 songs of the set were solo acoustic ones by Jason Molina. I couldn’t come over with a set list, as I don’t know the songs well enough (and have some problems to differ between them…
)
Well, even though I still think that most of the songs sound the same, now I think it’s a great same
but it was frustrating that there wasn’t any encore, even though it was clear that the crowd enjoyed the show very much & they shouted a long time after the last song for an encore, but the show was over & done after less than an hour
April 4, 2003 at 7:01 pm #85111Hello again FC (I’m referring to the "World is changing" thread with that "again")!
Well, I just got back from seeing Songs: Ohia here in Berlin right now, and I think the opening guy was called "Burd Early" – a good name if you ask me! Was that him? Just a guy, a beard, a looping machiney & his guitar? Probably! Songs: Ohia was solid, but/and I think the reason why they played so short in Hamburg was the same why they did here: Jason Molina said he was sick w/ very high fever.
But the real surprise were the amazing ENON! Hadn’t seen them before, and only listened to their album "high society" with half an ear, they rocked the hell out! Part Blonde Redhead, Part Brainiac, All Great! Highly recommended to all. They were sandwiched between B.E. & S: O., and when I bought their record, the drummer "approved"
of my fIREHOSE shirt, so they must have good taste, too… -
