sorry to hear that Jason Molina isn’t feeling well, he didn’t mention this in Hamburg. Must be hard to tour when sick. :(
The support act was exactly the guy you described. Yeah, he mentioned his name, but I forgot it. The other band didn’t open here…

        Mainly 4 SG but anyone who’s interested…

Saw Bettie Serveert on Weds. Really great show. Only knew one song (Kid’s Allright) but entranced by the rest of their stuff. The lead singer has an incredible voice that absolutely stands out on every song. A lot of the songs would start off really slow and slowly build and intensify until suddenly climaxing then they would fade out really quickly. Very Neil Young llike as Salami was claiming (and yeah, there new drummer was tight!!!)…They only played for an hour and a half…so the $12 I shelled out kinda hurt since I was hoping for more. :slap: Came back for about a fifteen minute encore that consisted of two songs… 8)
Very interactive with the crowd (although I could only understand the chic), and the band was shocked that anyone in Ohio had even heard of them (all 50-60 of them).

These 3 dudes stood in the back talking really loud throughout every song and only shut up after numerous people asked them to shut the hell up :x
Why go to a show if yer just going to sit there and gab and not listen :?

        Anyways…it was cool!!!

SG-sorry this review took so long but I started a new job thurs. and if I haven’t been working, I been snoozing…

Hey BOB, glad ya enjoyed Frank Black, my girlfriend and I sure did!

what was the bettie serveet tune that went "what a wonderful solution, now the birds can rest their weary heads, and go to bed?"
used to love that and palomine.
            cheers.

                Bed / Calexico – Paradiso 4/7

Support act Bed (from France I think) sounded like a mix of Songs:Ohia, Low and Palace Music, but a little without the songs of those bands. So they were at certain moments quite beautiful, and more often quite boring. On one song they were joined by Calexico’s Joey Burns on vibraphone.

Calexico were great again (third time I’ve seen them in about two years time in Amsterdam), playing their unique mix of mariachi, country, rock, soundtrack-music, jazz etc. etc. A lot of stuff was played from their latest great album "Feast of Wire", which has a little more compact songs and a little less extended instrumerntals/soundscapes on it, making this show a little more rocking than the last one at the Melkweg last July. They ended the show with a Tex-Mex version oof the Minutemens’ "Corona" (better known as the theme song from MTV’s "Jackass"), after which they had to do half an hour of encores for the very enthusiastic crowd at the packed Paradiso (Joey Burns called it "this great, great temple of music", and he is right 8) ). So, great show, great sound, great crowd, great band!!!

                8)

What can I add? It was an awesome night, for me the best gig in 2003 so far (spinvis on one and a halve) Oh I love those two trumpets so much. The sound live so much more at the surface then on the records. Goosebumps all the time!!
Though I had a rough day today, I still had their sounds in my "mental jukebox" to support me and worked like "mothers little helper"!!
                  Calexo rules :!:

Looking forwards to the gig on 12/04 Steve Earle another hero.

                    Steve Earle / Paradiso / 12 april 2003

Would you believe it? Steve Earle playing on my birthday-party? It is true. We all know Steve as a very talented musician with a past as ex-junk and ex-jailor. He can play country but he can surprise you with a nirvana-cover of breed or some good old blue-grass traditionals. I like Steve most when he plays a mix of all those different stiles, blue grass, country rock and beatlesque kind a guitar rock.
Last night he was not at his best. It was more of the same thing. Okay he did a chilling version of “Christmastime in Washingtonâ€

                      The Bangles / Melkweg / 14 April 2003

It was quit a while since the Bangles played in Amsterdam. According to one of the die-hards fans in Melkweg was it about fifteen years that Susanna Hoffs – vocals / guitar, Debbi Peterson – vocals / drums / acoustic guitar, Vicki Peterson – vocals / lead guitar and Michael Steele – vocals / bass attended Amsterdam. To be honest, they looked gorgeous, (the bangles) as specially Susanne, it was as if time had stood still for her… 43 years old but….and it is so sexy to see girls playing guitar!
Okay let us talk about the music. It was splendid, new songs were as exciting as the oldies they played. Walk like an Egyptian had a nice gimmick, half way the song they changed it into Mrs Robinsson from Paul Simon. Of course there was “Manic Mondaysâ€

                        Hey Hansione!
I agree with you on the topic of liking "Doll Revolution" – it’s a pretty good album! I saw the Bangles in Berlin last week, and I also remember that they did some "gimmicking" with Manic Mondy as well, in which they segued it into a short version of the Velvet Underground’s "Waiting for my man", which I thought was awesome!
So, yeah – they’re still as good as they used to be, although I’m not sure whether I would have gone if I had had to pay the € 30 (!) they charged…

                          Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3 – Q-Bus, Leiden, 4/15
Because there was some misunderstanding about the start time of the gig I entered this cosy hall way too early, Steve Wynn and his band were still soundchecking, which was great to see and hear, as they did a couple of songs they didn’t play during the main gig, and the one they did play in the gig (‘California Style’), was done in a completely different a-capella version during the soundcheck 8).
After the soundcheck there was plenty of time to talk to Steve Wynn and the band, very nice people, especially drummer Linda Pitmon, with her infected thumb in a very impressive bandage, which had prevented her from drumming for a couple of gigs, and tonight she would be able to play only a couple of songs…. Steve asked if i had any requests, so I asked for the Dream Syndicate’s "the Days of wine and roses"….
After a not that great support band (‘id’ from Leiden, sounded like Crowded House without the songs, but with an incredibbly ugly trumpet… ) it was time for Steve Wynn and the Miracle 2 (in the beginning ,3 in the end) Jason Victor on guitar, Dave Castro on bass, and Steve Wynn on semi-acoustic rhythm guitar, Steve explained that Linda was only able to play a couple of songs, so for the next hour they showed that you don’t really need drums to really rock, a fine mix of old and new stuff, and for the last couple of songs Linda joined them, sometimes drumming with one hand (….no Def Leppard joke here…. ), sometimes using tambourine and shakers. A great rocking gig ended with a couple of well deserved encores, including with a ripping version of "The days of wine and roses"…….. 8) :D
…..and through some strange coincidence I am going to see them again, tonight in Utrecht……. 8)

…and you will know us by the trail of dead–the black cat, washington dc 4/17/03

good show. opener was something called "america is waiting". they yelled alot, wasn’t real into them. trail, however put on their usual hyperkinetic super enthused show. they really seemed like they were having a good time. great versions of another morning stoner and several other favs were played. i don’t believe i have seen them play source tags and codes, and it sounded like the singer had a hard time hitting all the notes. ah well, fun time, flaming lips on sunday. :D

                              Whipster/Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3 – EKKO, Utrecht – 4/16
Came in quite early again tonight, which was just as well, because support band Whipster started about 20 minutes early, they played a fine set of slightly grungy guitar-rock, in a better world they would have come from Seattle in the early 90’s instead of coming from Groningen in 2003….
So, another night, another great Steve Wynn show, this time in EKKO Utrecht (nice venue BTW), completely different from last night’s Leiden gig. Linda Pitmon back in full action drumming nearly the whole gig, Steve playing electric for nearly the whole gig, a completely different setlist, and apart from a minor technicalproblem (the PA not working during the first song) it all sounded great! Quote of the evening, by Linda: "Hey guys, could you hold back for some seconds while I tape my hand back together again…".After about two hours EKKO (nearly sold out) obviously wanted a lot more, and three encores followed, first one a semi-acoustic set of three songs, secon one was another amazing version of "The days of wine and roses", those duelling guitars…. 8) ), and the third encore was a kind of canpfire version of "Caroline" done from the middle of the crowd, no PA, just 2 acoustioc guitars, the band & crowd singing, amazing……
Afterwards there was time enough to talk with (and share a couple of beers with) all of the band again, a bunch of very nice people! :D
den Buck left the place with a couple of signed cd’s. a signed setlist, and nicely caught a train, which took him safely back to the Big City… 8)

oh man, what a great show. mostly soft bulletin and yoshimi, but a good blend. lots of cool visuals on the big screen and people in bunny costumes with flash lights. also lots of confetti and beachballs. if you haven’t seen them, and even kinda like their music, go see them. awesomeness.

also picked up tickets to see sonic youth and wilco here in june. horid venue, but i got decent seats
