I just saw WEEN at Promowest Pavillion. Pretty good show, nice and loud!!! Ween seemed to be in somewhat sober form  Remember back when I was younger (way younger) and going on all sorts of substances. Kind of nostalgic, although I still had a nice beer buzz going 8)

Pretty good time, although they only played for 2 hours…usually WEEN plays for like 3 or 4 but still pretty good. Got home and my roommate was asking if they played…

      Buenos Tardes Amigo? NO
      Aids? NO
      Freedom of ’76? NO
      Spinal Menengitis? NO
      Roses are free? Yes
      Little Birdie? NO
      Dr. Rock? NO
      The Stallion? NO
Put the coke on my dick? NO
      Big Jilm? NO

So I guess after all, I was kind of disappointed :(
But Hey, my tix were free so I can’t complain

Got a whole bunch of pics. I was right up front in the pit, but most of them didn’t come out so well…being pushed around while trying to snap shots and being that I took them with a crappy camera phone :slap:

Will try to get them online but having a bunch of trouble with TRIPOD’s design stuff. They want me to use their formats instead of letting me just create an image page and I don’t really feel like fucking around with editing out all their tables and text lines from THEIR pre-approved templates just to put a couple of pictures online. Also won’t let me access my online images folder so I have to RE-upload everything to their specific folder (over my slow-ass phone connection…yeah right :P ) Man, I wish I still had DREAMWEAVER

If anyone would like to see’em let me now and I’ll send them to you via e-mail or something or other

      Peace scene!

i’ve been gone for awhile, and since then i’ve seen: ailer’s set, guided by voices for $3 in front of the capital, m ward/rilo kiley, luna, and a couple of others i think. i found this on hfs’s website from the gbv show:
          [img]http://liveonpenn.com/20030712/medium/DSC_5929-GBV-6.jpg[/img]
lower left corner, with the silly hat and green tshirt is the back of my head. also seeing gbv/shins/my morning jacket at the magnet magazine 10th birthday party on friday. should be rockin’

I talked to Isaac before the show last nite. Really nice, funny, and candid guy. Shorter than I expected and he’s getting a little pudgy.

I brought all of my cd liners for him to sign so he had quite a bit to say:

            – new album will be probably be out in feburary
            – the recording is done except for a few things
            – this tour is to try out the new drummer
            – the new album is like a cross between [points to Lonesome Crowded West and Sharpen Your Teeth]
            – I said Lonesome was probably my favorite and he said that Moon and Antarctica will continue to grow on you over years.
            – he told me about the situation with the Jeremy, the new drummer, and a possible replacement I won’t repeat it here. but he was very candid and was talking to me like I was his best friend

as for the show. Good except for bad sound and some dickheads in the audiences (a good argument for prohibiton). There was some really funny stuff towards this guy who was yelling "STYROFOAM BOOTS" for half an hour. I got the show on mini-disc and I’m going to try set up a ftp site so I can share it since soulseek is down.

The stage at amigos is only about knee high so you can’t really see anything, I was standing on the right side of the stage so I could only see Isaac and nothing else really. One of the dickheads was 7 feet tall.

I’m going to see them again Monday night at a much better venue (higher stage, better sound, less dickheads???)

The opening band, Cobra High, was also really great.

            >Tuning – Hotcha Girls Riff
            [Please Bury Me]
            Paper Thin Walls
            Wild Pack Of Family Dogs
            Third Planet
[Children Named After Towns We Never Been To]
            Trailer Trash
            >No Requests
            I Came As A Rat
            >Glowing Guy/Styrofoam Boots rants
[The Good Times Are Killing Me]

            Never Ending Math Equation
            Bankrupt On Selling
            Cowboy Dan

            Interstate 8

My recording sounds fantastic. I’ll rip it up and transcribe some of Isaac rants for you to read.

guided by voices/shins/my morning jacket; trocadero philladelphia, pa; 9/5/03

troc is a bad venue, but i ended up getting really close for gbv. shins were really good, they are one heck of a band. gbv only played for an hour and a half, but a good selection of old, new, and unknown. the worst thing was i broke my spider-man watch in some strange mosh pit. one of the shortest gbv sets ever, but it was a good time. also, philly is one dirty, smelly city. :|

hey bob, thanks a lot for the very cool Modest Mouse report!!! and you’re about to see another show! …makes me jealous :P

the new record will be out in February? :| well, something to look forward, then :)
definitely sure about Moon & Antarctica growing over years.

soulseek isn’t really down, they just have some tech problems with the current version, but you can download the fixed version (Here) and you’re in :)
would be cool to have the show recording there!

hey god’s shoeshine, thanks for the GBV reviews. not bad to see them twice within a short time :) …I’m looking forward to the GBV show here in Hamburg in less than 2 weeks :D

Yeah, going to see them again tonite and I’ll be taping again and maybe getting some pictures. I’ll have the mp3s done next week and direct you to them on soulseek.

I’m going to make an mp3 of a hilarious exchange between issac and a guy who was yelling STYROFOAM BOOTS. Isaac is a funny funny mofo!

Modest Mouse was great, same set list but add Doin’ The Cockroach…Yeah

Issac Brock gave some guy the business here, he was continually yelling for Polar Opposites, agree he is hilarious!

Looking forward to hearing the show you taped, we’re getting together on SS this sunday…hint hint

A certain someone that came with me to the show still hates Modest Mouse, he appeared to be in a significant amount of pain thru the show

just back from the Kaizers Orchestra gig.
hey, they’re an amazing live band, and they know it :D
great percussion sounds, with lots of different items, but the oil barrel sound is what definitely rocks! great to hear their very unique polka tango "gipsy songs" with the full sonic blast, it’s like Tom Waits on acid or something. And that very weird language adds to their charm :P

it was full, but not overcrowded, about 250 people who enjoyed the show, but didn’t really go wild (it takes a hurricane to let the coool Hamburg residents go wild, though)
…first time I’ve ever seen a barrier between the stage & the audience in the logo club. I guess it was there to prevent the band from jumping into the crowd :P

only 1 encore :( so I guess they have to come back soon :)
thanks for the very cool tip, Robert & Spaceboy!!! I’d recommend everyone to check them out!

I had an extended long weekend and saw my two favorite living bands. I’m going to write a detailed piece on the whole trip for my web page but here is a rough part. It was an amazing experience and I really needed it.

Thursday – The Weakerthans – Saskatoon
Friday – The Weakerthans – Regina
Saturday – Modest Mouse – Saskatoon
Monday – Modest Mouse – Regina

Here is the report on the Monday Modest Mouse show

The Regina modest mouse show was the polar opposite of the Saskatoon show. Well behaved crowd, organ & CB receiver worked, higher stage, flawless performance, great sound, no perspiration dripping on your head… yet somehow I was more affected by the Saskatoon show, as much as I was pissed off by the dickheads in the audience at the time, it had so many spontaneous things that it resulted in a more memorable show. The Regina show was more like seeing the Foo Fighters or something with a big stage and a barrier between the audience. Plus a big part of what made the show great was seeing Isaac’s eyes open up wide when he freaks out right up close (Regina was too dark). Of course, seeing them just two nights earlier made me less excited. I’m glad I saw both shows (same for the weakerthans) because they complemented each other.

There was no encore but they did play more songs and had to take an intermission. During the intermission a guy walked up behind me and said "hey Bob, how’s it going" it was Colin, the bass player from Cobra High, he remembered my name and everything. He said he actually preferred playing Saskatoon, although I’d say they won the crowd over much better in Regina. I couldn’t believe that no one clapped or chanted for an encore but honestly I was tired and I’m sure everyone else was too.

After the show I talked to two other guys from Cobra High and they said the Saskatoon and Regina shows were the best. The U of M show was pretty lame in their opinion, a stereotypical "college show" crowd.

I went outside to talk to Isaac. He was talking to a kid about the storm and how he tried to get hit by lightening once, really funny. He also turned down some kid who wanted to go get high "not tonight" really cool about it. He was very sober I thought he might have been a little drunk in Saskatoon. He remembered me and asked if I wanted to go for a beer. I stood by him for a few minutes and then we shot the shit leaning against a PA speaker. He actually liked the Saskatoon show too and said it will probably be the best show on the tour and it’s the rowdiest he’s ever seen Canadians. He said “No barrier, broken glass, and cuts… but a great showâ€
