yeah, I’ll have the pics scanned tonite. I used crappy 100 film but I should be able to lighten ’em up. I’ll work on the reordings and I’ll have em up on soulseek soon enough. You can’t browse my files but I’ll help you find them
hey VF, did you see the mouse in Victoria?
September 20, 2003 at 11:02 pm #85173Built To Spill, Dilusions, and Solace Brothers
Got there about 5 minutes b4 the first band started…great timing

Solace Brothers is just like BTS but not as good. Dude on guitar, one on a kit, and one on keys.
Dilusions is Doug on bass and the other guitarist from BTS with another dude playing lead/rythm and a guy on the drums. Also very BTS sounding…
BTS played for about an hour/ hour and a half…pretty good!!!
Lots of their slower stuff, so the whole evening had a very mellow feel about it, but they still cranked out a few rip roaring jams.
Ended the first set with Cortez The Killer :aliensmile:Came back for a second encore and jammed out two songs for another 10-15 minutes. Pretty Kewl!!!
Not sure what renovations occured while the Newport was shutdown, but nothing was different as far as I could tell. Like always, hotter than hell in there, and incredibly refreshing when they decide to open the doors and let some cool air in. I feel sorry for the people on stage, it must be even hotter up there since you’re above everybody and playing
:slap:Very young crowd as well, majority (85% ?) were younger than me, and I ain’t exactly old either, not what I was expecting. Also saw some people (the very young ones)headbanging?
Never really thought of BTS as hardcore headbanger stuff, but to each their own I guess

Got a ton of pics, and a 15 second video feed while jammin CORTEZ THE KILLER. Will put them up on my site tomorrow when I get up. See what I can do about splicing in some sound to go with the video (I know exactly where in the song the vid starts…we’ll see what happens!
Oh yeah GO BUCKS!!!! I don’t care about rankings, we’re still coming out on top

Didn’t feel like pushing through all the people up front…so these are from a short distance…but still all right

No sound w/ the video, but will see what I can do later
September 21, 2003 at 11:37 am #85175Super Furry Animals/Grandaddy
SFA were pretty tight. Live you realize the guy actually has a pretty good voice. They played things spanning their career and picked the more rocking songs off their new album, which was probably a good idea since there are a lot of mellow tracks on it. Unfortunately, they did not get to play long enough in my opinion.
Grandaddy weren’t bad, but all their songs sound the same. Except for the boring encore that I was just wishing would end. They kept talking about being from California and how they were sad because this was their last date in the state.
Interesting crowd. Mix of nerds and hipsters and fat people. I prefer this over all hipsters.
September 23, 2003 at 1:11 pm #85176hey kurticus, thanks for the fine BTS review and the pics

so jealous
I really wish they’d come over to Europe!I saw GBV last week, which was a very nice experience. the club was packed and humid and we all had a great time. All in all it came out as a big nice party, everyone was jumping around with a smile on their faces, spilling beer around and singing along.
They played for about 2 1/2 hours, lots of songs from the new album, but of course also much of the older stuff.Bob Pollard shared a big bottle of whisky with the crowd and everyone was happy
September 24, 2003 at 6:40 pm #85177Hey FC, here is a cool review (in German) from the Hamburg GBV gig (from gaesteliste.de)
, wished I’d been there….
September 26, 2003 at 3:21 pm #85178Yo La Tengo w/ the Aislers Set
@The Pagaent (St. Louis)
September 25, 2003The Pagaent is a big venue, but not to terribly big, so I was surprised to find the place half empty. The Balcony was actually closed. I managed to find my mate Nick and his (sometimes) girlfriend Charlotte Sitting at a bar facing the stage, smoking away.
The Aislers Set took the stage at about eight. From my vantage it was (left to right) Jen Cohen (keys) , Amy Linton (guitars, vocals, trumpet), Alicia Vanden Heuvel (bass, vocals, my future wife), Wyatt Cusik (lead guitar, xylophone), with drummer Yoshi stuck in the back. The Bands sound, kind of a ’00’s Beach Boys with girl singers, was enoough to get Charlotte to drag Nick down to the floor within two songs. This gave me an excuse to fanboy the merch booth, as well as a chance to put my new Yo La Tengo shirt on under the shirt I was wearing (nobody wants to be that guy. I wandered down to the floor for the rest of the bands set.
For the geeks out there: Amy Played a Guild Starfire XII into a pair of Silvertone amps, except the last few songs during which she played a Fender Mustang/Duosonic. Alicia played a Squire Bronco bass with a replacement pickup into a Silverface Fender Bassman. Wyatt Played a Fender Jazzmaster through a Tuner, a Rat, and a Boss EQ pedal into a Fender combo (I think a Pro Reverb).
***
After the Aislers set, I gave a smoke to a passing stranger. After a while I was ‘informed’ (I’m not completely dense) that I was being "eyed." Charlotte, who informed me of this fact, decided that we should meet. And thus I was literally pushed at a complete stranger. Stilted conversation, stilted conversation, what shows are you going to, blah blah. Then I say "And, of course, the Pixies are back together"
"WHAT," she says
"The Pixies are back together"
"No fucking way"
"Yes, it was on Pitchforkmedia. (calling) Hey Nick, are the Pixies getting back together?"
Nick (walking over), "yes they are"
Girl with plugs behind me "Wait, are the Pixies really getting back together"
etc. It was much funnier last night. Almost as funny as Yo La Tengo’s Acapella song (forget the name), Acapella. . .With hand gestures and synchronized Dancing.
And what about Yo La Tengo, Malcom, how were they?
They were Beatific.
Ira’s Fender amps and guitar equipment were stage right, Jame’s Ampeg amp and another fender amp were Stage left, behind the racks of keys and, I believe, a sampler of some sort. Georgia’s kit was in the middle, with a smaller set in front of it. The band played a long set, with Ira’s guitarsolos being some of the best cacophonies ever. He switched guitars nearly every song, mainly playing his Natural Strat and a Fiesta Red Jazzmaster. James played the same sunburst seventies Jazz Bass the whole night. And I danced! But I wasn’t alone. I know you’re supposed to stand in one place and maybe nod your head, but there was a fair amount of movement in the crowd at this show, especially from local legand and habitual show-goer "Beatle Bob."
The second encore was a personal favorite, as Ira asked particular members of the audience what songs they wanted. More importantly, they asked Nick what he wanted to hear, both of us shouted "SugarCube" and it was good, with Ira taking an extended guitar solo, and Georgia doing a great drum-solo thing.
After one more song, the show was over, Ira saying "you kids have school in the morning." And then he stuck around the merch table for a while, talking and shaking hands and signing my tshirt and drivers license ("I’m Sure this isn’t legal")And then Nick, Charlotte, and I went out and had breakfast at the courtesy Diner, where the food is pretty damn cheap and the jukebox plays Patsy Cline, James Brown, Johnny Cash, and Pink.
September 26, 2003 at 3:51 pm #85179i saw the aislers set here earlier this year. i really dig them. amy linton’s first band (henry’s dress) was pure brilliance.
September 26, 2003 at 7:01 pm #85180I must say I like Henry`s Dress more than the Aislers Set,I dunno, the Aislers just don`t cut it for me,maybe I need to listen to them more.
Thanks for the review Malc
September 27, 2003 at 12:26 pm #85181hey malcom, thanks for the cool review

dB, thanks for the link to the GBV review. I’ve been wondering what’s the name of the great opening band (although I came too late to see their full set
). They’re The Sights
I liked their rough, energetic sound very much. …I’ll check out some of their music now…September 28, 2003 at 11:13 pm #85182http://freakscene.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=43331
modest mouse shows are now on soulseek
October 13, 2003 at 4:03 pm #85183Grandaddy/Elbow/Starlight Mints. The Pagaent, October 11, 2003
Starlight Mints-Another slightly psychodelic retro-rock band. I’m a sucker for this style of music, so it was a good time. They earned the TShirt for the night. I was dancing with vague acquaintences Greg and Angie when Nick and Charlotte decided to show up. Oddly enough, the same couple from the Yo La Tengo show was at this one as well, and they were still a/be-mused at my bad dancing.
Elbow-Get over it man. The first few songs weren’t so bad, but they seemingly decided to play those songs a second time. There’s the slow, remourseful dirge, the slow, remorseful dirge, and then they played a slow, remourseful dirge. Singer loses points for having a music stand onstage. Singer AND guitarist lose points for taking to long to switch instruments between EVERY FUCKING SONG. Guy in front of me loses points for taking thorough notes on the show. Beatle Bob doesn’t lose any points, Beatle Bob is cool.
Nick Leaving in a Huff because I smooched his ex.-Quite entertaining in hindsight, although I missed the first Grandaddy song because we had to get Charlotte’s purse.
Grandaddy-Not bad at all, showed old cartoons, random "home video footage," and various oddities on the big screen, a nice change from the bizarre "artsy" footage shown by the previous acts. Overall I enjoyed the set, I’m not intimately familiar with Grandaddy’s material, but my only criticism of the band is that every song has the same ending. Still, it was a lot of fun.
After the show, I gave Charlotte a ride home. We sat in the car across the street from her house (mostly) talking. At one point somebody said "I wonder what time it is?" I turned the car on. The clock read 4:40.
Shit.
October 22, 2003 at 5:59 am #85184The last week I’ve seen:
Melt Banana, which was great. Nothing can compare to a night of booze and japanese noise. Twenty second songs, bad english, wierd skirts and tank tops, wailing and dying guitars.
Janes’s Addiction, was sad. Just sad.
October 22, 2003 at 8:01 am #85185Yeah,Melt Banana are alot of fun
October 24, 2003 at 8:51 pm #85186Mambo Kurt – de Azijnfabriek Roermond 10/24
Slightly crazy German guy plays stuff ranging from Celine Dion’s ‘My heart will go on’ to Slayer’s ‘Reign in Blood’ on his ‘Yamaha Electone D-85’ home organ, other ‘highlights’ include ‘Enter Sandman’ transformed into a waltz, ‘Killing an Arab’ as 170 bpm techno….. Cool venue as well, with a nice afterparty as well
