February 6, 2007 at 3:00 pm #124043Well, it’s the talk of the day around here http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/06/astronaut.arrested/index.html”>http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/06/astron … index.html
Astronaut to face attempted murder chargeOkay, it bolsters my story………..I had to fly on a Delta flight with a female pilot not too long ago, has this ever happened to anyone else……….I told my husband that it made me feel very unsafe with a woman pilot.
He thought it was the most horribly sexist thing I had ever said………………..and I said "women they could be on their period, hormonally imbalanced in some other way, fighting or upset with a boyfriend, having an emotional day, out of sorts"…..I didn’t know, but I didn’t like it……….If my plane is running into trouble I want a man and another man to try and sort things out in a hurry….not a woman.
Then this from todays news………….I would have hoped that the woman we have helping the space shuttle with entries and reentries would have been more stable, but I guess NOT note the articles are saying Nowak (the female astronaut in question) believed another woman, Colleen Shipman, was romantically involved with the captain of the Space shuttle, the same captain that she was in love with. When she found out the "other" woman was going to be in Florida she raced from Houston to Orlando wearing diapers in the car so she wouldn’t have to stop to go to the bathroom,in order to confront the other woman authorities said. They let us know in a side note that Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry.
, that makes it just slightly more normal. She brought a knife, gun, electric tape…WTF…..we had a CRAZY person helping to man the space shuttle, God help us!!!!!
This has led to some interesting conversation around here. Like a few of us women agree that
if we were in space for several weeks at a time the captain might start looking kind of cute however I think there is little privacy in the Space Shuttle for romantic get togethers but who knows…… leading to our last bit of discourse………………can sex in zero gravity really work? I have my doubts, we can only assume that Mrs. Nowak and the married captain were trying to figure it all out.
Laughing to the point of crying……….can’t wait until I meet up with Juan, I think he will really like this story.
February 6, 2007 at 5:19 pm #124044I’ve been following this story too. Effing crazy, I can’t believe the diaper bit either. She must not have a good marriage to go to these lengths for another man. I wonder what her kids think of what she’s done, let alone her husband.

February 6, 2007 at 6:07 pm #124046Oh, I don’t know………..female pilots make me nervous like male school bus drivers do, I don’t think of it as sexist, I think it’s just some neurosis of mine.

February 6, 2007 at 6:16 pm #124048my point is, that view had been used to keep woman from voting, holding positions of responsibility, just seem strange to see someone use this pretty sad incident to "bolster’ their arguement about woman being weak.
February 6, 2007 at 6:42 pm #124049yes, you have made a good point, thoughts along those lines were used to keep woman down, I don’t believe woman are weak but subject to emotions more so than men, I believe that to be true. Easy access to our emotion is a real gift and really listening are gifts of women. Oh, Another Girl, because you are in the health care field, I think you might appreciate this………….This past year, the day before thanksgiving, I had a miscarriage, I didn’t even know I was pregnant but I knew I has hemorrhaging and I couldn’t make it stop. I went into the emergency room after bleeding at home for about 2 hours non stop. I had a two hour wait in the waiting room before I got back to the back. It was 7pm when I got to see a doctor for the first time….long story short……..a pregnancy was confirmed and although I was still bleeding heavy around 2 am the male doctor said since It was a very early pregnancy I didn’t need a d and c and that being a holiday and all, I should go home and be with my family and take it easy…..my hematocrit (last checked at 11pm) was low but not to low. A nurse was trying to help me to get dressed and I had no energy, not even enough to lift my own arms………..I told her I think I’m going to die……….this statement concerned her enough to advise another blood count and to tell the doctor to wait for the results. The results of my second lab work showed my hematocrit was around 19 and I was rushed into a blood transfusion to save my life. I needed 3 units of blood…………The male doctor was just about to let me go home, on my medical records it states as the patient was about to leave she made a statement that concerned the nurse.
I’m very thankful for her concern, it saved my life.
Women are not weak, I just shudder at some jobs!February 6, 2007 at 7:42 pm #124050I think you stand an even chance of being discharged early from the hospital by both male & female md’s, guess I just don’t like generalizations based on sex. Seen that used in many negative ways thru history, feel we need to stay away from putting limitations on peoples skills & attributes based on sex…just my opinion.
One of the good things about working in Mental Health vs Medicine…very little exposure to other peoples body fluids
