Hey guys, a little late notice but I’m on NPR’s all things considered this evening. I tell a quick "New York" story, my story is about a pair of cowboy boots I owned in the 1980’s and what happened to them at 4 in the morning on the subway. I’m found about 20 mins into the show.
You can hear the show still on the west coast and in the middle of the country…and of course on line.
and here, starting in about half an hour!

IT was both……….I worked at the INTERNATIONAL Bar on the corner of 7th street and 1st avenue. A "New York Story" spun itself out of there on an almost nightly basis. It was that kind of place.
The narrator of the story introduces it by say "The heroine"…….talking about me…. but I got really scared at first……….thinking to myself……
"Geez, I didn’t say anything about the heroin"
but everynight , a rotating group of junkies would come in with stuff to sell, stuff they had just lifted, like bicycles, baby strollers, car stereos and handbags……once, a guy tried to sell me my own bag back……….I knew it was mine because it had been missing from the bar and I had hand embroidered my own astrology information on it. I took it and wouldn’t give it back. He said, "If you don’t give me back the bag, I’m calling the cops"
Yeah right…………….he left without another word, gone to look for other stuff to steal and resell.March 3, 2008 at 11:11 am #133078Yeah, 1st Ave. was a jungle back in those days. Now? It’s practically like the suburbs. Even Ave. C is gentrified — and unaffordable! While the city is currently about 100x safer than it was, it’s also about 50x less fun.
