      Story by Anthony Bartkewicz

Indie supergroup Witch plays metal sans quotation marks

With members of the psych-folk outfit Feathers and seminal indie band Dinosaur Jr in the band, you might be tempted to toss the ?I?-word at Witch?s name, fantasy-oriented lyrics and near-50/50 hybrid of stoner rock and doom metal. But don?t accuse guitarist/vocalist Kyle Thomas, who writes Witch?s music and lyrics, of irony. ?It seems like people think that if you play one kind of music, or you play soft music, then you can?t authentically play loud music,? says Thomas, ?which is bullshit, obviously. Way before I started Feathers I was in punk bands and shit like that, and so was Dave [Sweetapple, bassist]. So it?s not like I?ve never played loud before.? Even J Mascis, who pounds the drums for Witch, started out by helping birth the blast beat in Deep Wound before dragging banished ?60s and ?70s guitar heroics back into punk rock with Dinosaur Jr.

?Stoner rock? tends to be a reject-it-or-embrace-it genre description, but there?s no denying that some bands really do sound like the musical personification of the creepy burnout who either holes up in a basement with too many occult books or got eerily good at seducing chicks into his wizard-airbrushed van. While Witch?s music grooves more than it dooms, Thomas? lyrics to songs like ?Seer? and ?Black Saint? are decidedly supernatural in nature. ?It?s definitely a mix of things, but there?s bits of truth within them,? Thompson sort of explains. ?I just kinda write whatever comes to mind. I don?t really remember taking that much time to think about what I was writing about, it was just kind of like ?OK, this is the song.? But yeah, a lot of the lyrics are [supernaturally-themed].? Thomas describes Witch?s doomy centerpiece ?Changing? as coming ?from the point of view of somebody looking in on some sort of ritual or something like that. But it?s also kinda talking about things that are going on in the world as a whole.?

Since Feathers and Dinosaur Jr are full-time touring entities, Witch?s upcoming US tour will be the band?s first extended series of shows. ?We?ve only played like four shows. We played at a really shitty bar for our first show, and then a couple of shows for CMJ and that?s been pretty much it,? says Thomas. ?We?re not really used to it yet, and J has been away touring a lot so we haven?t really been able to practice much, but I?m definitely looking forward to playing more.? As such, Thomas says the songs will come off ?true to what you hear on the album,? but promises inveterate stoner-rockers (or, to cut to the chase, stoners) that the new batch of songs they?re working on ?could go more in the direction of? just jammin? out.?

I was just at my local club on Friday to see some old friends play. I was talking to the sound guy for the club, and he told me the owner just submitted a bid for witch to come out and play. For anyone who doesn’t know I live in Tacoma, WA (about 30 miles south of Seattle). They would need to have a bunch of US dates to make it all the way out here. I hope it works out, that would be killer.
