and there is Jerry Garcia, Eric Clapton, some would say Trey, all worthy contenders…

J wants to be somebody. He is somebody, probably the greatest guitarist that has ever moved me…

man i’m shaken, Jerry G. is awesome. I have only seen the Dead once live and he was incredible, he moved thousands of people in life and all. Sorry to sap a little but jerry is great. But j is with us pushing better and better, wait until he is 50. Rocking oldie, like neil young… Any way I want to re tally, j and jerry both the bestest ever. Everyone else is second (jimmy, eric, hendrix, ben harper, kurt, etc). Opinion subject to change without notice…

I think J’s playing is really great and there are not so many better guitarists…J# is special cause he plays what he thinks and he shows all what he can. But there are a lot of other guitarists who can play very great, Tom Morello for example and Jimi Hendrix, but Kurt Cobain doesnt belong to the best players! The feelings in Kurts playing are really great but wasnt realy a good player (nothging against him!).

I suggest it depends if we are talking technical ability or feeling.

Kurt Cobain may have been lacking on the abilty but boy did he have feeling.

J has both….

Sorry to the Grateful Dead fans, but they do nothing for me

Well put deepsludge! And there are also so many different musical genres to choose from. It would be futile to try to pick one guitarist and label him THE PLAYER. For example, if you’re into classical music, I don’t think J would be a natural #1(could be wrong though.)
I remember MOJO Magazine made a ranking of guitarists -top 100 or something, in 97 i belive. J came in at #27th if my memory serves me right. Some classical guitar player came first, don’t remember his name though.

To me J, together with Billy Corgan and Rick McCollum (Afghan Whigs), is one of the best guitar players ever. They all put a lot of emotion and feel in their music. On top of that they also have a very good technique.

Just gotta say that Doug Martsch of Built To Spill is one of my favorite players!! Allthough I said that ranking players is futile, I just had to put his name up here, together with Ron Asheton and Chris Ballew(three string bassitar!!) does it matter who’s best…just enjoy it dudes!!!

but you missed out these few:

Ian MacKaye
Brian Baker (Minor Threat)
Thurston and Lee (Sonic Youth)
Steve Malkamus
D Boon (my personal fav)
Toni Iommi (He so Heavy – inspiration to all)
John Fahey
David Pajo
David Grubbs
Jim O’ Rourke
Wayne Coyne
Eddie Van Halen
John Renbourne
Bob Mould
Richard Thompson
Bert Jansch

there’s too many to list……which is sort of my point

well its all about opinion isnt it? i mean, thats what this part of the board is for.

J is certainly my favourite guitarist, he can communicate so much through his playing..

but i wouldn’t say he’s the greatest guitarist ever..just my favourite.

J. would make a great guitar tech. I always thought he had the best MIND for the guitar, especially in his evolutionary use of pedals and faders. However, on pure technical ability, there’s about 6 or so I’d put above him (in no particular order): Hendrix, Garcia, Corgan, Clapton, Morello (may be misspelled, the guitarist for RATM), and Malkamus.

To my mind the only one that has even begun to compare to J when it comes to putting out a meltdown of energy, melody and rhythm in the leads, is Neil Young.

Oh, and btw, putting my fellow swede Yngwe Malmsteen down like that really hurt my feelings …

Another great player no-one has mentioned yet is Tom Verlaine. What’s wrong w/ u guys?

As far as how the general public is going to react to a guitarist J does not even make the list.

But J is the greatest guitarist as far as puting his personality into what he plays. NO-ONE could play what J plays! Even Malstrom! J is the only guitarist besides Hendrix who really put his GUTs into his playing. But Hendrix was still spending a lot of his energy just trying to get past the Marshal and the Strat. It was more his equipment then Hendrix. Hendrix had the courage to try and that is why he was great.

Where as J is all J Mascis! Nuthin’ like it!! No comparison!!!

J IS THE GREATEST!!!!!! …just don’t tell no one as the’ll might scoff….

J of course is my fav guitarist of all time….and probably all time to come. No one can make the guitar express so much emotion so clearly….too cool!!!

Some of my other fav guitarists,

Ron Asheton
