It is a great cover of the Parlaiment/Funkadelic classic (which contains the prelude as well) found on the Watt + allstar "Ball-Hog Or Tugboat?" album.
An impressive note about that track: Watt said that they recorded that in one take as J new every note by heart PS – we are listening deepsludge as your complaints are not the only ones we have had. If any one is having problems or feels that someone is just being disrespectfull be sure to PM/Email the mods for that forum with links to/info about the incident(s).
thanks + sorry,

September 8, 2001 at 3:14 pm #53734I don’t think J knows any theory or technical things at all but he is the most passionate player ever and therefore is the best.
September 8, 2001 at 4:30 pm #53735There are guitarists like Hendrix who is the best. I think that J. knows theory. He’s too good not to. I think that theory comes natural to him, he might not even know he’s doing it. I live my life through his music.
September 8, 2001 at 4:50 pm #53736I dunno this 4 sure, but I think J knows more theory when it comes to drumming than guitar playing. Think I recall him sayin in some interview that he learned soloing by playing along with Stones records. Maybe he knows some theory, but it certainly doesn’t seem like his playing is based on it.
/ maxSeptember 8, 2001 at 5:12 pm #53737exactly, he learned playing by ear. discovered how chords go together by himself rather than taking lessons or reading books
January 12, 2002 at 7:58 pm #53738I think J is one of the best because he does what so many of us want to see a player do live which is…go off and play the hell out of his insturment when he wants to. Too many times we see/hear the same solo section of a song played live without much change at all. I would like to think that J knows that this is an element which sets him apart from others. I have seen more then a few shows in my time and I have to say I can’t remember seeing anoyone that has the potential to play a 5 min solo out of the blue on any song.

My favourite guitarists:
-Neil Young
-Richard Thompson
-J. Mascis
-Steve Wynn
-Bill Elms (amazing steel-guitar-player from the Friends of Dean Martinez)
-Thurston Moore
-D. BoonJanuary 14, 2002 at 4:59 pm #53740J is my favorite guitarist for sure, when I started listening to Dino it got me thinking about rock guitar solos at a time in my life when I listened to jazz mostly.I also listened to Hendrix and Neil alot around the same time. What`s strange is J played solos in a genre of music that frowned upon lead playing.I remember Lyle Preslar of Minor Threat saying that guitar solos in the punk scene killed the hardcore era. There still is`nt alot of lead guitarists in the punk/indie scene but it seems the ones that came after J looked to J for inspiration because there was`nt too many others.
I think coming from a jazz mindset is one reason I got into J,he`s not playing jazz but he is improvising, which is what jazz is about.Fav guitarists:
J
Hendrix
Neil
Moore/Renaldo
Ira Kaplan(YLT)
Howe Gelb(Giant Sand)
Peter Visser(Bettie Serveert)
Sonny Sharrock
Blind Willie Johnson
Wes Montgomery
Ron Asheton
Kramer/Smith(MC5)
Bob Mould
Sheilds/Butcher(MBV)and whoever else I`m forgetting
January 14, 2002 at 5:13 pm #53741Anyone else remember reading that J didn’t know guitar chords by their names until the late 80’s? I think it was in an interview with him, Kevin Shields and some british wank crica 1991. Anyways it was about like:
J: I learned guitar by playing solos. Playing power chords hurt my fingers really bad, so I just played solos first.
Interviewer: So you don’t know chords?
J: I learned their proper names finally, so yes I can play them.
I’m trying to locate that article, but I dont see it anywhere. I remember being talk about pot and Domino’s Pizza in the interview too… Anyone?

I am sure all the musicians will agree with me that you can hear a J tune a couple of times and play it fairly easily, but try playing a Stanley Jordan tune by ear.
January 15, 2002 at 12:21 pm #53744Thanks for the link, Allison. Cool interview. I hadn’t read it before.

Even if that’s true, why would that be the criterion to decide who is the better guitar player? -
