I think most of the time he doesn’t use an amp, he’d use a Sansamp Para Driver DI or their Acoustic DI box, hooked up to the venue’s PA

Using this means it’s very easy to set up and get the same tone at different venues.

That pic of his pedals shows the SansAmp Para Driver… all the way to the right.

No, it’s made by ZVex. Very cool, check it out…

                        hey! i’m a lofi loop junky :)
i mean i got one and i luv it.
i gotta bunch of loopers that i have used for a long time-they let you sync to midi-layer and undo-play backwards, have minutes of loop time…all that stuff but…they are digital.
the LoopJunky is completely analog and sounds it ;)
i try to maintain an analog signal chain and still be able to loop(20secs). it only allows one loop-but…how many do ya need?
J uses his seemlessly-i luv how he works it, solo-and would love to see him put it in his band rig sometime… ;)
                        s 8)
(also-have seen <J> shows many times-never seen an amp on stage for any of them, and the sound is !boomin!.)fwiw

I was at that show. J was definitely going through the half-stack, though I think it’s the first time I’ve seen him use an amp for a solo acoustic performance.

J used that same rig (as in the pics….same guitar/amp/etc.) when he made those videos that were on Rollingstone.com. It’s not a "acoustic" set per say, but he is using that Marshall.

What’s up with J. using a Mesa? When did this come about…….and…..why?!

I think J only used the Mesa head at CBGB’s after the Marshall head had a problem

well, you know..I can’t really say anything bad about Mesa. Mesa has some really great amps and they are tremendous studio amps as well. I PERSONALLY don’t like the way they sound live. I tend to like Fenders for the stage, never tried to record a Fender though. My cd (Allison would know) had my old Peavey amp for two songs and the other eight was done with a Dual Rec. So, I’ve used Mesa, J. has used Mesa….Kurt used the Mesa Studio Preamp. I just need more Gain on stage. I can’t get on stage even with my Marshall and a DS-1 and enjoy the tone. I have found that my Fender M-80 and a Boss MD-2 is the closest I have found to the Smashing Pumpkins studio tones (which I hear was basically a Creamer Dreamer, and a Marshall, cut and pasted like 49 times, to make the sound of 50 guitars playing at once). Either way, I like the sound I get…..but a lot of people tell me it’s too bassy, and/or has too much gain. Man, m-80’s are WAY under rated.
