J and Lou

Enought already! Okay, so Lou had some problems with being kicked out by J – but some innocent fantasy about SNL really is no reason to start bashing him. I saw Lou in Amsterdam this year, and he was great. Or just listen to his songs on Harmacy – songs so pure and honest that your heart almost breaks just listening to them.

And I prefer "Where you been" to anything else, but it’s really not true that J’s music "improved vastly" after Lou left. "You’re living all over me" is a brilliant album, and Lou played bass on it.

So Lou whines? God! Half of pop music is guys whining that either: 1) They are lonely 2)They were lonely yesterday 3) They will be lonely tomorrow. What did you think J is doing? He could be the king of whiners (and that’s exactly why I love his music so much). "Why won’t you be my friend, I would love to hold you tonight even if we just pretend." Good music is all about whining, and as long as it’s done in pureness and honesty, that’s just great.

Jasper, you’ll note I was merely sharing an amusing story. I am well aware that without Lou I would enjoy that many fewer Dinosaur Jr. albums. I don’t knock Barlow’s talent even if his material doesn’t always suit my taste. I was just relaying a J and Lou story to the J and Lou message board. No hard feelings!

Jasper I have listened to the music, it did not do it for me in any way…..just my opinion but it counts. When I saw them they played really crappy and the whining was done by lb before and after every song, it was very annoying!!!!! I disagree with your contention that most pop songs are people whining, that is expression of emotion in my opinion. I agree hagers characterization of lf as a psycho is over the top. You had to be aware when you started this topic that there would be a lot of opinions, gossip and different interpretations of situations.

[img]http://www.freakscene.net/ubb/smilies/face-icon-small-blush.gif[/img] But I really feel J’s later stuff (how I classify Bug and beyond) is much better. That’s just my opinion and I recognize that. I started listening to J when I heard Start Choppin on the radio. Since becoming a full-fledged DJR geek I have acquired the older stuff too, and I like it, just not as enthusiastically or in the same way. There were obviously some cool tunes on Dinosaur and You’re Living All Over Me, but not the same kinda guitar-hero wailing-solo cool as the stuff on Green Mind and later, which is the main thing that attracted me to his music…that ability to make the guitar say more about your emotions than words ever could. I’ve always been totally into bands with the "right" guitar sound and no one has nailed it for me like J (Pink Floyd comes in a very close second). That and his melancholy [img]http://www.freakscene.net/ubb/smilies/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] vocal style… No offense to Lou fans, I definitely went overboard there.

i agree on Dinosaur THe solos werent that kicking but on your living all over me i think some of J’s best solos ever are present lets go song by song

Little Furry Things – from the start the guitar playin is awesome and his solo in the middle is a bit bland but still pleasant to the ear

Kracked – Best fucking solo in his career it would make JImi Hendrix cream in his pants

Sludefeast – at the end of teh song j goes into a kicking solo

The Lung – This solo is good but nothing to rave about

Raisans – great fucking song great fucking solo

Tarpit – this short solo is mostly a lot of distortion not so good but it goes great with the song

IN A Jar – Great solo part of the seldom heard guitar in the song

Lose – Best song Lou ever wrote not really a solo in here, why would lou want to showcase J’s talent its his vision

Poledo – Worst song on the album and i love it, its lou in his room with a guitar and two tape recorders so no J solo at all

SHow Me The Way – J does with his guitar what frampton needed special tubing to do need i say more

hagar if you like J solos you should love this album, and its proof that J and Lou were a better creative unit when togather, but i would of thrown Lou out of the band too if i were J. I woudlnt want some gut with visions of killing me in my band

Couldn’t have said it better myself! It’s a personal preference thing, not a arguable point. I like the solos in the foreground and in your face. They are great solos, true, but to MY ear (and there’s no argument here, they are my ears after all) they tend to blend into the background too much on the older stuff. That’s why I like the newer stuff better, period. Hey, it all fuckin rocks hard, a point we can agree on, that’s the important thing!! my opinion on the matter is that they are both talented but they had different views on how they expressed themselves. When they worked together it was brilliant as are there works they did apart. There is no doubt in my mind that they would have parted ways eventually anyway but they both regret the way it happened…

Thanks for that Jeremiah! Sounds like a totally cool guy, and that he and J are coming to terms with the past ugliness. I regret the bashing I gave him earlier.
I TAKE IT ALL BACK Guess I just got defensive about somebody harboring hatred for J, & it doesn’t sound like he feels that way now.
Not only that, he also has going for him the fact that he’s 30. It’s a scientific fact that people get cooler when they turn 30! [img]http://www.freakscene.net/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] Plus he’s from Jackson, just 45 minutes from yours truly!
Now I am definitely going to start listening to Sebadoh, something I’ve avoided just because I didn’t care for Lou.

Yeah right! He’s been 30 for about 5 years [img]http://www.freakscene.net/ubb/smilies/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]. Personally I’m glad he’s backed off on soloing, on the records at least. I got rather tired of it.

I’ve only heard the two mp3’s on this site but it sounds like he’s pushing his voice a bit higher this time. I liked it when he did that on the previous album.

I know he loves to rock out but I’d love to hear him do something a little different. I got excited by the ‘Take a Run..’ single, I hope he has more up his sleeve. More banjos please!

I saw Lou do an in store solo acoustic performance when Bakesale came out. He was piss drunk and he admitted he was on pills. He couldn’t even figure out which songs he wanted to play and I think I remember him not being able to remember a lot of lyrics. He’s pretty sad if you ask me.

For me, comparing J and Lou is impossible. Or at least without a point. They’re both talented, but they’ve developed in different directions. Sebadoh has a couple good records, The Sebadoh and Harmacy, and I also like the newest Folk Implosion album. But it just lacks the energy and…magic that recognises some of my favourite Dino albums.
As for them coming together I just don’t see the point really.

There should be no hatred for Lou but he is not J. So what though. THey split and if you have ever been kicked out of a band it kinda hurts. Espescially if the band has any success. There are a few good Sebadoh songs but not man as far as I am concerned. I do like Soul and Fire but Lou and J had creative differnces which is hard to believe considering no one stays with J for a long ime. Lou is just on a list of many and more to come so he shouldn’t feel bad.

If I listen to the new Folk Implosion album, I feel it’s full of magic. The way Lou records is just amazing, it gives the songs something extra. I saw him live and he was just amazing. He sings more beautiful than J. And I feel sometimes his lyrics are better, so much more full of emotion. ("Hand in hand, we set off on or own. But heavens’s not ours, and truth can be a game we play.", "Pleasure takes it’s toll, people lose control every day", "Forever is not that long, let’s begin")
Tree and Love is Stronger is definitly one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

By the way, somewhere on the album, Lou sings: "Spend seven good years, till I noticed they weren’t looking at me." You reckon that’t about Dino?

I definitely agree with you about "Love is Stronger", it’s one of the most beautiful songs I know. And although if I have to choose, I prefer J’s voice and lyrics, I’m also I big fan of Lou.

But I don’t think that quote has anything to do with Dinosaur Jr. Lou wasn’t in Dino for seven years, and what he sings is: "Catching butterflies, line drives, watching TV / I had seven good years ‘til they noticed they were looking at me / I didn’t like what they see." (I know it looks weird, but this is what it says on http://www.folkimplosion.com ) It seems to me that this is about what it does to you when you realize that other people are watching you. Maybe the seven years were the first seven years of his life, the years of innocence.
