hi, I’m a big fan of Neil Young and Iv’e read so much about How J was a big follower of neil Young and it is also obvious in his music. But, whenever J talks about his influences he never mentions Neil Young. Its always late led Zeppelin, Keith richards and Black sabbath. In his older material I notice a lot of other influences such as Black Flag, sonic youth, REM (early stuff of course), Husker DU and velvet underground. I dont know if he’s ever mentioned either of those bands being an influence in his music. Has J ever performed with Neil Young or played any covers by neil young ?. I know that he did a cover of ‘lotta love’ on a neil young tribute along with sonic youth etc but thats about it I think. what do you think?
April 30, 2003 at 6:12 pm #93310Interesting topic, indeed

Dino recorded another Neil Young cover song for the Neil Young Tribute Album (I’ve Been Waitig For You), but it has never been released officially. Lou Barlow has been so kind to put it out of his archives up on his website: New Dino Song, Rare !!!

It’s true, J has often been compared with Neil Young, both his voice/ his way to sing in some songs and the guitar style, but J doesn’t really ever mention him when he names his influences… (or did I miss something???)
In an interview last year, J said about the frequent Neil Young comparisons:
Quote:"It’s better to be compared with Neil Young than with somebody who sucksâ€April 30, 2003 at 8:46 pm #93311After reading that ‘interview’ link I think its a bit too weird how J is uncomfortable about being compared to Neil Young. Is he a follower or not? I dunno. J is wierd. You guys should listen to ZUMA by Neil Young- I think early dino albums are mostly inspired by this one. J plays solos quite similar to crazyhorse. Maybe J is influenced more by Neils backing band ,crazy horse, rather than Neil himself. I Dunno. J is weird.
April 30, 2003 at 9:24 pm #93312Neil Young kicks arse
I just watched the Rust Never Sleeps concert the other week – brilliant. In ‘Our band could be your life’, J seems to acknowledge Neils’s influence but notes that he has always liked the The Stones more (or something like that). Personally I have never noticed more than a small similarity between J and Neil.May 1, 2003 at 8:14 am #93313J is influenced by Neil for sure but not to the extent critics think. I think J is a bigger fan of the Stones,Sabbath,Stooges, etc more so than Neil.
J did tour with Neil around Where You Been,I`m sure that would`ve been amazing!
If you want to check out other bands that were influenced by Neil, check out Eleventh Dream Day(the early 90`s albums especially like Beet,Lived To Tell, and El Moodio),Giant Sand(check out Ramp),Bettie Serveert(check out Palomine).May 1, 2003 at 1:16 pm #93314Listen to the last solo of Gargoyle
May 2, 2003 at 5:27 pm #93315I think that Neil had a guest performance on that one
At least 50 percent of the reviews you read about J mention something of Neil Young in it I think, but that might be a bit too much.
I remember that when I played in a band at the age of 14, we started to listen to Neil Young a lot because we wanted to sound more like J and Dinosaur jr. I was only 14 by then so I just assumed that what the critics said was true.
Right now I don´t think that his influence was thát big but it surely can´t be denied.
I have to start listening to the Rolling Stones more.May 5, 2003 at 1:40 am #93316In a swedish interview last year J said something like this: "It’s better than be compared with the Eagles or something, I don’t know"
May 18, 2003 at 10:37 am #93317"its better THAN be compared with eagles".. Hehhe
